Over the weekend, former Xbox studio Bungie unveiled Marathon — its next major project after Destiny 2 — and in the wake of fan reception to the new title, the team has given us a little bit of clarification on its pricing plans.
From the off, it seemed pretty clear that Bungie wasn't planning a free-to-play launch with Marathon - otherwise we'd have probably heard the term screamed from the rooftops by owner Sony. Instead, the team is delivering a premium product here - but not at the full $70 price tag you'd expect from AAA titles these days.
Here's that little bit of a clarification, posted out to social media this past weekend:
There you go, then, you can expect the ex-Halo developer to tell us all about its launch pricing plans for Marathon in summer 2025, ahead of the game's full launch this September. Taking a look at recent online-focused titles from Sony — such as Helldivers 2 and the ill-fated Concord — $40 seems like a price point the company likes to settle on.
Ultimately, we have just a few months to see what price point Sony and Bungie go for - and in the meantime, Marathon's closed Alpha arrives on Xbox later this month.
What do you think Marathon will cost on Xbox? Give us your best guesses down below.

Cool, still not interested in an extraction shooter and if it was F2P I still wouldn't be interested.
Concord, Skull n Bones, Crossfire X, Marvels Avengers and Foamstars were all called Premium also. Avengers is the only one with an offline mode.
Premium is just code for 'live service only with a box cost'.
Marathon ticks not one single box for me.
This is going to tank hard, isn't it...
This a another huge fail waiting to happen unfortunately!
Why don't they get Bungie to create a proper single player epic like they used to do with halo and it would do so much better than this Concord like failure!
@Ricky-Spanish
Because the executive's colourful charts in the board room said "Look at that trajectory, we must follow Helldivers 2!" while purposely ignoring the absolute disaster that was Concord...
@NishimuraX I don't get either why they want to release this dead on arrival game multiplatform but not Helldivers 2 that would be huge if it dropped on Xbox!🤷
@Kezelpaso When did they announce it was free on other platforms?
Your title implies that only Xbox is getting charged.
Your sister site pushsquare made comments about Microsoft Indiana Jones hurting PlayStation on physical release, when Nintendo and Sony do the same thing with online required titles and saves.
Comes off like there’s an agenda.
Another AAAA game to avoid… can only hope there is enough people buying this at under $70 to keep away the inevitable did not meet expectations….
@Deshalu Well this is just untrue. PlayStation has tons of games you can play without ever connecting online. Pop cart or disc in, install what's needed off the disc, sans internet, and play.
Microsoft on the other hand is pretty threadbare on these.
Just objective fact.
Like I said elsewhere, I don't think this is going to do anywhere near as well as Bungie hopes it will. I can almost guarantee it will flop.
I’m not interested at all now ngl. I think it’ll flop, not as hard as concord, but still a pretty damn hard fall. I’m sensing bungie layoffs again. Someone save me from this pessimistic perspective I have
I wonder how long this game will get before it is cancelled, and whether they will refund the full purchase price as they did with Concord?
There is such a huge (in my mind, completely unwarranted) amount of negativity from people about this game. People are comparing it to concord which was a by new studio - bungie have been making great feeling games for actual decades (including some of the most highly regarded games of all time). People seem to be actively willing this to fail because they don’t like the genre - so don’t play it 🤷 I hope it does well and it grows from what was shown.
@InterceptorAlpha I didn’t say all of PlayStation titles, but yes, some of Sony’s titles do.
But I think you’re missing the point of my argument.
What I’m saying is these websites make it sound like Sony good Microsoft bad.
They both do the same thing. Nobody brings up the fact that Sony literally was an advocate of getting rid of physical copy games. The Sony community fought back and Sony had to change their game plan. This was the beginning of the PS3 era when Sony tried this
The game really doesn’t look good the more i watch videos of it. i’ll give it a shot because i love multiplayer games & need more to play but damn this just looks so damn bland
The most interesting part about this is, that this is an actual Sony First Party title going to the Xbox.
No 3rd party's involved.
But is all data included on the disc though?
Nah I wasn't interested in this but now we've seen more of it I'm definitely not going to bother with it. Got plenty of other games to play.
Helldivers 2 would have done great on Xbox but this will most definitely flop, of course not like Concord but I don't see it making it to year 2.
Dead on arrival. Concord 2 basically. Maybe lives longer due to being multiplat.
I call it in a month or maximum 2n season it will go f2p due to lack of players.6-12 months down the road probably in death door.
The audacity to charge money for a derivative game that also released by bungie that dont know how to develop like service games. They could not handle destiny and its their only game in 10 years.
I won't pay for this game. It's the visuals and style for me.
....and a huge backlog of other games that I want to play to take a chance on something I'm only a little interested in.
