Bungie has pulled back the curtain on its upcoming extraction shooter Marathon today, including a first proper look at gameplay. It's been revealed that Marathon will release for Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S on September 23rd, 2025.
In Marathon, you'll pick your Runner ("cybernetic mercenaries with unique abilities"), join a team of up to three players, and work together to battle "hostile AI security forces and rival Runner teams".You'll collect weapons, implants and equipment along the way, and if you survive, everything you collect can be kept for future runs.
In teams of up to three players, you’ll drop into a zone where the goal is to loot as much as possible and get out alive. You’ll be up against several threats, including AI security forces and other teams, that you’ll need to deal with in some way. If you survive, everything you’ve collected is yours to keep for future runs. For extra challenge seekers, there’s also an option to run a match solo, take down teams alone, and extract with all the loot by yourself.
You can check out the Marathon Gameplay Reveal Trailer up above, while we've also dropped the more lengthy Gameplay Overview Trailer down below. It's still early days, but we're liking what we're seeing from this one so far!
The release date is obviously a bit far away, but if you're interested in checking out Marathon this month, a Closed Alpha will be taking place beginning April 23rd. To sign up for it, you'll need to head to the official Marathon Discord server.
How are you feeling about Marathon so far? Liking the look of it? Tell us down in the comments section below.

I honestly don't think this is going to do nearly as well as Budgie hopes it will. They're masterclass when it comes to FPS gameplay, but less so at anything else. Especially, and most of all, listening to community feedback. I give this a year, two max, before it flops.
God this looks awful. Ignoring the fact that this is yet another awful extraction shooter, this looks like a a cat vomited up a bunch of random colors and we're playing as chunky hairballs with guns. Nothing about this game looks even slightly redeeming.
This is not my Marathon.
As I said on Push Square, I’d rather have a modern remake/reimagining of the original Marathon Trilogy.
Bungie could have called this thing by any other name, but using Marathon just rubs me the wrong way.
Dead on arrival.
Concord 2
Weird arthouse garbage?
Starfield still winning
This looks nothing like Marathon.
Takes me back to when Bullfrog/Starbreeze released their 2012 'Syndicate'. It wasn't a terrible game, not great either, but it had very little to do with the original Syndicate games.
Oh no it’s Concord again!
Looks like a mobile game
So what's different between this and concord? I had forgotten the name until I saw the comment above haha.
And I mean like how would this stand out more than the other game that got shut down?
I can’t see myself playing this and that’s saying something cause shooter games are my thing. I try to give them all a chance and i will try this. But nothing screams special and must play to me. Once Gears E-Day comes out it will take a near perfect shooter to get me off PVP Gears.
Sorry to say it looks terrible. Arguably worse than Concord.
I would’ve tried this if it was free to play, but charging for the game when there is not even a single player story campaign and there will be battle passes makes it not for me.
....it just looks like destiny again?
i think i'll hard pass.
Aesthetic looks weird but in all for the game, let's go!
Phew phew phew.. I don’t know what’s so enjoyable with this one more of the same shooter. Not even a single player campaign.. This is going to flop like Concord, sorry for Bungie but they lost their touch ages ago
The game looks much like The Cycle from Yager. And it apparently just rips off Apex Legends with weird aesthetic choices. And it's a paid title with battlepasses and in-game shop. And it's an extraction shooter every major company tried to do and failed miserably.
So I'd say dead on arrival.
Its a bold art style & being a Bungie game i would expect the shooting to be fluid. However, I have zero interest in an extraction shooter even if it was a free to play (which this isn't) I would not play.
It will be interesting to see how this is does in what is a pretty saturated market with many free to play games already in the genre.
Bungie going out on there own really didn't work halo has been bad since they left and they have just made crap like this and destiny since very sad!
After Destiny 2 launched and had to relearn their lessons they learned with Destiny 1 and charging us for the experience, I'm gonna be passing.
If you ever want to see how cope looks like just take a look at Push Square, absolutely nothing in this game looks appealing to me but they’re convinced Bungie is going to come through when Bungie’s last good game was Halo Reach and it was a completely different team, not a single person remains of the Bungie that made Halo and I’ve never been a fan of Destiny and specifically their monetization model.
I've never played an extraction shooter and I'm not going to start now, but I do like this art style.
I've never owned a Mac, so I didn't play Marathon, but Ive seen retrospectives and the story seemed really interesting. If this doesn't continue it at all I imagine fans of the series will be as disappointed in this as I was with Phantasy Star Online. Which is to say, the most amount of disappointment possible
I'm gunna skip this! It just doesn't appeal to me
@TheGiraffe Huh?
Strange time to bring that game up.....
Starfield literally didn't win any awards anywhere did it?
So no, not winning
@IOI 🤔Sounds like you're seeing what you want to see.
Destiny 1/2 were petty dang successful even if it's not your cup of tea.
A lot on P■ aren't fans either
Gaming fans , we are a ridiculous bunch...
Looks like Concord 2.
@CallMeDuraSouka
I'm an almost daily Starfield player, one of the few, and ppl on here know me for this, I think. So, I mean winning for my gaming playtime/attention
@shoeses
Yep, the fallout/assessment thereof is gonna make for some funny youtube gaming industry commenter videos
I look forward to those more than the game lol
@CutchuSlow concord was an arena shooter this is an extraction shooter
yay a close alpha that i will never get into
The key creative forces behind Halo and the first Destiny are not involved with this game.
brb reserving a plot next to where Concord is buried.
