Update []:
We've got another background to add to the list! There's a new one for WWE 2K25:
Original Story: The ever-growing list of dynamic backgrounds on Xbox has continued to evolve today, as we've been treated to (free) new options for both Monster Hunter Wilds and today's release of Split Fiction!
You can see an example of the Monster Hunter Wilds background in the picture up above, while the Split Fiction version is based on the game's cover art - and as usual, they're both slightly animated versions but nothing too crazy.
To select one of these, all you need to do is head to the 'Personalisation' section of the Settings menu on your Xbox Series X or Xbox Series S console, and then look for 'Backgrounds' followed by 'Dynamic Backgrounds'.
Beyond this, we want to bring your attention to a free trial that's also going live today for the Game of the Year contender Split Fiction! This is available via the free "Friend's Pass" on the Xbox Store, which ultimately is intended for a second player to join in with someone's who's already bought the game, but it also contains a free trial within it.
As a result, you can check out the early part of Split Fiction with a friend either online or offline, and then your progress will be saved if you decide to buy the full game later. We actually think it's well worth buying this one at launch anyway!
Will you be picking up Split Fiction this week? What do you think of the backgrounds? Tell us below.

I prefer the one I have (the one that shows a background per app you highlight) but these two are gorgeous.
Immediately set the Split Fiction one on my Xbox 😊
The cover art for this game is weirdly off centre, I don’t know if that’s intentional or a bug, but this dynamic background is thankfully properly centred and looks fantastic!
@Kaloudz you can have both a custom dynamic background and the highlighted game art enabled at the same time now. They added this ability in an update last year at some point (can’t remember exactly which month it was).
Though the changeable game art works better with the simpler game-neutral abstract backgrounds I think. I wish they would add some new abstract backgrounds too, it’s been so long since they added anything to that category.
It would be great to get an AC Shadows or Atomfall Dynamic theme.
@Cakefish Oh snap! I'll have to look into that and see how I go about setting that up. I must have missed that announcement. Thanks dude!
@Kaloudz go into the background settings menu and you’ll see a little tick-box for the highlighted game art. It can be toggled on/off separately from the dynamic backgrounds 🙂
@darylb24 it’s really hard to predict what will and won’t get a background. Lies of P and Psychonauts 2 (two of my favourite games) never did but were notable Game Pass releases. Here we have Split Fiction which isn’t Game Pass at launch, but yet has a lovely background available. Sometimes I feel Microsoft picks names out of a hat. Though the annualised sports games always seem to get backgrounds so they must have some sort of sponsorship deal, there’s so many of them!
@Cakefish Thank so much chief! I have just done that very thing following your steps. Very much appreciated!
