Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3+4 was announced this week with a July date for Xbox Game Pass, and everything about it seems to be shaping up brilliantly for the most part - although there is a controversial change concerning THPS4.
It's been confirmed by Activision to Kotaku that THPS4 will not feature its original career mode in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3+4, but rather will implement the two-minute goal structure that originated in the first three games in the series.
Here's the confirmation that THPS4's career mode will utilise a two-minute time limit in the new game:
"Kotaku was able to confirm with Activision that THPS 3+4 will not include the original career mode seen in the OG version of THPS4 on the PS2. Instead, like in the first three games, each THPS4 level will feature a list of challenges to complete in a 2-minute run."
As you may recall, the original version of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 that appeared on the OG Xbox was the first to ditch the two-minute time limit back in the day, opting instead to provide an open environment where you could run into NPCs and take on their challenges. This ultimately sparked a new formula that the series would build upon for many years.
Alas, Activision seemingly felt it was too much work to incorporate the old THPS4 campaign into this new Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3+4 remake / remaster, so we'll have to wait and see how the two-minute limit fares in this modern version.

That's not good they should of just done thps 4 like it was originally it's a bit of a let down like no horde or mp for gears collection!
This will be contentious. But personally I didn't like the format in THPS4, having to stop to talk to NPC's to get challenges completely broke up the lines, it ruined momentum and flow. Also stopping to get rewards, assign stat points, save etc. Just let me SKATE!
Obviously it will depend how they do this, it could be terrible, but i'm cautiously optimistic this could be done well and be an overall improvement. I'm willing to keep an open mind at least. But it's a shame they didn't include BOTH options. Choice is good.
on one hand, the 2-minute missions formula is the back bone of the Pro Skater series, so I get it. especially since the 4th game isn't the most fondly remembered.
so while this is a drastic change, I don't think it's a bad one 🤔
Doesn't sound that good. Seems like a big change to the game. I hope it turns out well.
To be honest, when I think of my time with Tony Hawk, the 2 minute timer forms a big part of that memory, so I'm on board with this decision.
They didn't really crack the more open THPS until THUG, so no objections here.
@Vordus yeah I'd actually forgotten theyd got rid of the timer in THPS4. It keeps it consistent across the game; as this remake is in essence one game.
Why even bother including 4 if you're gonna completely gut it? There's a chance it'll still be good as it's own thing, sure. But it won't really be Pro Skater 4, and now we'll never get a proper Remaster of it.
Doesn't matter to me, I never played the OG THPS4 so it won't bother me. I will be mainly playing 3 as that was my favorite and the one I put the most time in.
Wont make any difference to me as I'll be experiencing these for the first time with no backwards comparison but I generally do dislike it when devs edit things to this degree.
To me this comes across as being lazy because it’s the easiest decision to make with the least amount of work needed to do. But that’s to be expected with modern game development.
Might as well stick with 1&2 then. Guess I'll skip this.
What a disaster
