This week marks the first ever arrival of Suikoden 1 & 2 on Xbox in the form of a new HD Remaster for the two games, and with the release date set for this Thursday, some critics have already been sharing their reviews for it.
There aren't actually any Xbox reviews yet as far as we can tell, but plenty for PlayStation, Nintendo Switch and PC. Our sister sites Nintendo Life and Push Square have already reviewed it too, with both awarding a "Great" 8/10 score.
Let's take a look at at the early reviews for Suikoden 1 & 2 remaster ahead of its Xbox release this week:
Worth Playing (9/10)
"Suikoden I & II HD Remaster: Gate Rune & Dunan Unification Wars is an excellent updated port of two great games. Almost all of the changes are for the better, the translation is massively improved, and it still maintains all of the charm and flavor of the original games."
Nintendo Life (8/10)
"While not as feature-rich as some collections, Suikoden I & II HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars proves that these RPGs have largely stood the test of time. While the issues with this remaster don’t take away too much from the original games' brilliance, we think these classics deserve the very best."
Push Square (8/10)
"Suikoden I & II HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars combine two incredible JRPGs from the genre’s golden age on PS1, lovingly remastered and improved for PS5 and PS4. They suffer from the same issues many games did back in the day: unwieldy, occasionally grindy, and sometimes obtuse."
PC Gamer (79/100)
"These are fantastic RPGs wrapped up in a middling remaster. Many of the new additions have simply been lifted straight from a 19-year-old PSP remake, and rarely address anything that seriously needed more care to improve."
TheGamer (3.5/5)
"However, while their restoration itself leaves a lot to be desired, The Gate Rune And Dunan Unification Wars is still the easiest way to access the first two games in the Suikoden franchise, and despite my many quibbles, the quality of the original titles bears out."
There aren't that many reviews just yet (and as mentioned, none for Xbox at all), but Suikoden 1 & 2 HD Remaster is currently averaging around the 80 mark on Metacritic, which seems a pretty great start for this new collection.
If you're interested, it's available for pre-order on the Xbox Store right now at a price of £44.99 / $49.99, and the release date is set for this Thursday, March 6th. There are a few in-game pre-order bonuses that are included as well.

This certainly has my name on it - but I wont be picking it up any time this month or next - between GP and AC Shadows, I'll be stacked until May.
I played them back when and have such limited time now. I really want them to do well tho. Sorry to hear there are some issues with the package.
Bought it pre-order just the other night. Ready to go tomorrow! I nearly finished 1 back around release, but never played 2. Even with that, Suikoden had left a lasting impact on my gaming life.
I'm going to pick them up but they're going straight into backlog. I have things on the go, but I want to dedicate the end of March to AC shadows and the excellent looking Atomfall.
It's pretty wild that Xbox reviews of multiplat games are often unavailable, as of late.
I feel like there's a need for niche Japanese Xbox games because I buy a lot of them. Think there's not enough coverage on them for Xbox which is bad news if we want more content ðŸ˜
