It's been a good while now since we were a little bit addicted to PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds here at the PX offices, but a fresh update from the team makes PUBG sound worth revisiting on Xbox later this year.
Yep, Krafton has let us know that a proper current-gen overhaul is coming to its famous battle royale title on Xbox Series X|S - and this overhaul is set to launch "in late 2025". Here's a bit more about what the developer has planned for this new version of the game:
"In late 2025, PUBG will transition to current-generation consoles, bringing significant improvements to performance, FPS, map loading speeds, and overall graphical quality. This transition will optimize PUBG for modern hardware, addressing long-standing limitations and enhancing the overall experience for console players."
To make sure all of this goes ahead and feels like a significant upgrade, the team is moving the game over to Unreal Engine 5 for this new current-gen version. The switch to Epic's latest technology will allow the developer to deliver "elevated graphical fidelity and a more scalable development environment, ensuring PUBG remains visually impressive and technically adaptable for years to come."
Back in 2022, PUBG became Xbox Series X|S 'aware' with some nice bumps to resolution and frame rate - but it remained on the same core tech that powers the Xbox One version of the game. For now, we don't have any proper gameplay of this upcoming UE5 transition, but the team does touch on the move in its lengthy 2025 roadmap video - which we'll chuck down below.
Excited to see what real current-gen PUBG looks and plays like? Talk to us about this announcement down in the comments.

"bringing significant improvements to performance, FPS"
Alas not something one associates with UE5.
@Cornpop76 but for PUBG, maybe... 😅
Never really got the craze with this game. It just felt janky as hell.
@kezelpaso
I believe the press release only mentioned Unreal 5 for the PC version, with the update to the PS and XB being proper current gen updates rather than the gen aware versions that both platforms currently have. This will still be good as they can squeeze better loading and visuals out of a real update, the performance is already great on current gen anyway. This makes me think that the old gen version will be left behind by the end of the year with support withdrawn and access to it closed. No way they will service cross gen updates and the PC, they'd be spread too thin.
