PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds — or 'PUBG: Battlegrounds' as it's now named — is still going strong with a new map coming real soon! That new locale arrives in the upcoming 18.2 patch, however, it's some fresh details on the next-gen console updates that have caught our eye.
To put it simply, PUBG is becoming 'next-gen console aware' with the upcoming update, meaning the developer can unleash some of that extra power for next-gen players. On Xbox Series X that'll equate to proper 4K, 60FPS support, with Xbox Series S managing that same frame rate at 1080p, although it sounds like PUBG will remain an Xbox One application and won't be getting a native next-gen port.
Interestingly, the PS5 version will only aim for 1440p, giving the Xbox Series X a distinct advantage in image quality. We'll have to see if that holds up with frame rate too, but hopefully, this update has been optimised enough, given the time it's been in development since the next-gen consoles launched.
Aside from these tech updates, changes are coming to some of the existing PUBG maps, like the desert-themed Miramar. Some of these are pure visual updates to make things look more detailed, however, some sections are getting layout changes to make for better combat flow throughout.
Will you be checking out PUBG's next-gen update? Let us know if you're still playing this one down below.

Haven't played PUBG in forever. There were just so many copy cats that were better on console. I would try it.
@Spazmonic it still feels too clunky on console with a controller especially when so many other games have done it better over the years.
Im not sure there's much of an appitite for this game any more?
Good to get an update for thise that do still play it!
I still play PUBG, yeah it's been a clunky journey, and yeah it can still get news bugs with updates... but its in the best shape it has ever been in and is a really fun game. King of the Battle Royals IMO.
This new update will also introduce anti aliasing, (much needed!) even on last gen too, so the game is definitely worth checking out whichever Xbox you own.
Is there a reason why such a gap exists? It's not like there's a huge performance difference between both consoles anyways.
@Brazenology I figured. I will give it a go, but no real hopes
Is this on GamePass/F2P by any chance? May give it a go once this update drops
@Spazmonic You can't say you have not played it forever and then claim others are doing it better. PUBG has improved a lot and is better than the copycats.
@PushButtons I can technically say whatever I want. When did it drop on console? 2017? I tried it again in 2020. It was still janky. 2020 is forever ago for me.
@PushButtons Absolutely right about this game!
The performance has improved so much and playing on a Series console is transformative, 60fps improves feel so much.
I even dug out my fat boy Xbox One recently as I was curious how it played now and although it is capped at 30fps it actually plays with a good consistency now, it's no longer that frame rate in the teens that people saw in the early Digital Foundry videos. When the update drops it will look nicer on XB1 too, the game is 1080p on XB1 (higher than other battle royal games on the console) but suffers from a very raw looking jaggy output, anti aliasing will be a nice improvement. So what I am saying is whichever Xbox console you have it plays well.
I would say to everyone, give the game a chance! It's free to play now so cast aside your old opinions and jump in.
@PushButtons was talking to @Spazmonic, do you have two accounts here @DoctorJohnDisco ?
@JetmanUK Cool. Didn't know that one worked. I signed in from my phone.
@DoctorJohnDisco That's nonsensical logic. You can't say you have not played PUBG in 2 years and then compare it to other more recent BR's. Imagine comparing Fortnite, Warzone or Apex today to when they launched. They're not the same games thanks to continued dev support improving visuals, frame rates, gameplay and added maps too. Speaking of which, PUBG has more maps, and larger ones too, than all of the ones I mentioned combined. It's not for everyone bc it actually requires some skill bc jumping and sliding will not save you.
@JetmanUK I played from 2017-19 on PS4 and then XboxOneX. It had its issues but loved it enough to see past them. Then moved on to Apex and then Warzone. I would always check back every now and then but it didn't click as it used to. Now, something's different. I play on SeriesX which is great and looking forward to playing it now, especially the new map and QoL update coming this week!
@PushButtons you need to calm down. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I preferred PUBG style over the others. On console, for me it is janky. Warzone never had jank in the mechanics department. When I tried PUBG again in 2020, it might have been 21, I don't remember, it was still janky AF on console.
If you like it, so be it. Just calm down.
@JetmanUK So stupid. When I tried to get on this site after I switched from PS5 to Series X they said I didn't have an account. Knowing I did from pushsquare. so bizarre, but yea. The other is me. I apologize for that
@Spazmonic Everyone is entitled to their opinion but I'm only stating facts. And if you have not played since 2021, 2020, 2017, or whenever, your opinion is out of date. No offense.
@Spazmonic Hi mate. No need to apologize, I posted my comment as I suspected that you had two accounts and that you wasn't aware that you had accidentally used both.
@PushButtons I played from day one in early access (game preview) and loved it! Yes it was awful at times, technically, but it's just such a great game. I've played on all XB1 and Series consoles, had quite a journey with the game and Xbox I guess.
My favourite multiplayer game ever.
@JetmanUK Idk if it's bc of 3rd-person MP or that they're more grounded but the other I really like is TheLastOfUs Factions mp. And NaughtyDog is working on some type of BR or open-world like MP that may be like PUBG but in the TLOU universe.
@JetmanUK Downloaded it last night. It seems solid enough. PS5 when I last tried it is sooooooo not the case.
@Spazmonic Yeah it definitely gets some updates where they go back a few steps, but they usually then fix the new bugs. I think that the console port that they started with was very bad, it's taken years to get in in good shape. The PS version had some issues a short time ago and the last update messed the Xbox version up a little. The new update coming soon should improve visuals and add a new map so it's one to look our for.
Like I've said, even on the Xbox One fat it plays pretty well now.... I'd rather play on my Series X though!
Hmmmm.... I coulda sworn that the PS5 was not even 1440P compatible still?? I know it was not at launch and I really dont think I have hear about an update for the PS5 regaurding 1440P TV's and Monitors... So why does this article say that Xbox is going to be 4K 60FPS and PS5 is going to be 1440P at 60FPS.
Anyone have any insight on this for me??
@Stoned_Patrol @Titntin must be since tons of people still play it... Even on console.
PS5 can render at any resolution. Output is irrelevant. That being said I'm not sure. I don't think so, I don't recall seeing an option in the menu for 1440p.
Basically what will happen is the console will render at 1440p then output it as a 4k image. So it will look very soft (aka kinda blurry) on a 4k display. It would actually look better on a 1080p display.
@d0x3601.. thanks for the update. I wrongly assumed fortnite and apex had buried it! Im sure this is welcome for many then...
Incidently, ps5 does not output at 1440, its 4k or 1080p.
I rather suspect that once its released it will have dynamic res scaling to help it maintain frame rate on all platforms, as per most titles.
@Titntin The Xbox is the more powerful but they can't add dynamic resolution via these console aware updates. Basically it's still running the last gen code but knows it's on the new consoles. They can't have them run dynamic scaling unfortunately, it has to be a fixed number.
That doesn't mean it will always be that way. I'm sure eventually they will do a real update so they are both native PS5 & Xbox Series x games. Then they can add dynamic resolution, enable VRR etc. Time will tell but for those that play it on a 4k display the upgrade from 1080p60 to 1440p60 will be nice because 1080p doesn't look very good stretched to 4k but 1440p is kind of right on the line of where the image looks soft but not so soft that it's distracting.
