Way back in 2015, current Gears developer The Coalition released Gears of War: Ultimate Edition as its first entry in the famous Xbox franchise - and it looks like at some point, the team was also working on a similar remake treatment for Gears of War 2.
Posting out to social media this week (thanks, VideoGamer), former Gears of War artist Ayagaure "Ayi" Sánchez shared an in-game 'material test' for Gears 2's once-in-development remake. Sánchez says that this gross-looking model was made "10 years ago", but in the end, the project "never happened".
This is quite an interesting development, especially because Microsoft never formally announced such a project following the release of its Gears of War 1 remake. Funnily enough, The Coalition also shared some suspiciously high quality Gears 2 artwork a few years ago - that's what we've used as the lead image for this article right up at the top.
Anyway, if current rumours are to be believed, this could all be water under the bridge in the year 2025. As Microsoft continues to plot its Xbox multiplatform strategy, it sounds like some sort of Gears remake collection may well be in the works again - this time to launch on multiple platforms ahead of Gears of War: E-Day.
What do you make of this revelation, Gears fans? Scratch some grubs in the comments section down below.

Cool to know but no doubt with the collection on the way at some point, most (or at least speaking for myself) would be happy with that. I do wonder though if we get some treatment that MCC got - like with Halo 2 - reworked visuals.
The coalition are useless and Microsoft don't value the gears ip simple as!
I just want the collection in unreal engine 5 looking as good as it can. That will be great to lead new players into E-day. Which some that have seen it say’s it the best looking video game they have ever seen. Time will tell on that. But as a Gears of War fanatic, i can’t wait to see both in action.
Ew! That's nasty... but also great work. Looking forward to the gears collection.
Why did Spartacus come to mind when I read your comment, @HonestHick?
I'm a fanatic...! 🤣
@Fiendish-Beaver HAHA yeah buddy! I am playing Gears 5 PVP again cause all week or so it’s been Gears of War talk. I am still after 2000 hours having fun with it.
PvP is not my bag, @HonestHick. It simply doesn't interest me. However, I do at least 3 hordes each weekend, which has left me at 91st in the World as an Engineer*. I usually do it as a duo with a friend, generally on Insane. Indeed, we have completed al 37 maps on at least Insane just as a duo, which is no mean feat.
I've recently been gaming with 3 of the 4 that used to do Horde with in GoW3, and so we've been able to up the difficultly too, and so I managed my first Master run no too long ago, which was a proper buzz. What wasn't a buzz though was that there was no achievement linked to it. That flat out sucks!
What also sucks is the rumoured omission of multiplayer from the Marcus Fenix collection. Which muppet thought that was a good idea?!?
*However, when you look at the rankings, there is no way that the number 1 has completed that many runs. I have completed 246 runs, whereas the person at number 1 has apparently completed 2079 runs. Bearing in mind that Gears 5 released on the 6th of September 2019, that would mean that they would have had to have completed at least one run every day since then. Whilst not impossible, I do find it unlikely, partly because that person has been at number 1 with that many runs for a number of years now. Indeed, there was a time when he would have needed to complete a minimum of 3 runs every single day, which I find highly improbable.
I don't like cheats, and that's what this strikes me as...
@Fiendish-Beaver Yeah something don’t add up on that. No way they have that many. I mean it don’t take away from the fact your stats are awesome. But i agree something don’t seem right on that. I know me and you sure have put in a ton of time on Gears 5. I quit playing it when Diablo 4 came out and I did close to a 1000 hours on D4. Now i am scaling back on it. I got 30 hours in on avowed and went from liking it to not liking to liking it again haha.
As for the Gears collection not having PVP. I know it sucks for us players that care so much for it. But it is rumored to have Horde and of course Co-Op. the reason they aren’t doing it is they don’t want to spilt the player base and servers for collection and E-Day. Which i mean makes some sense. The collection seems to be positioned as only a way to catch up players on the story. The big game is of course E-Day. Again i can see the reasoning for it but as a super fan i am a disappointed of course. But i will be getting the collection day 1 and playing them all over again. When E-Day drops i will likely take a vacation from work. It’s my biggest game of the generation.
I was medically retired from the Police after severely injuring my back, @HonestHick. These days walking is very painful, as is standing for more than 10 minutes. I did 28 years and had to stop 2 years short of a full pension, which sucks. However, I do receive a Police pension, which enables me to live from month to month, and to indulge in my favourite pastime, being gaming. So, whilst I would have taken time off work for E-Day, I won't need to, but I will be there day one, and I cannot wait.
Where did you hear that the MFC has Horde? I've not seen that. All I've read is that it will have co-op in the campaigns. Hopefully your source is reliable...
@Fiendish-Beaver first and foremost thank you for your service. It is often times a thankless job that so many people need and rely on. Sorry to hear about your injury. I wish you day’s without pain as much as they are possible my brother.
My sources are the huge channels that do nothing but Gears. They get it right more than wrong let’s just say. Not sure if that is reliable but it’s largely correct. They said no PVP a month to 6 weeks ago and now it’s breaking news. So there’s that in their favor. They also said a slide move is possible and if so that will be in PVP as well as campaign. Giving it a new feeling with movement. Maybe they want that too to be a part of PVP, plus have all players in one spot to buy skins and micro transactions. As for Horde they said they believe it to be there but can’t yet confirm. So i am hopeful they are right. Again this collection is more for younger Xbox fans and of course PC and PS5 to get caught up for E-Day. So even tho it upset me to hear no PVP, i can understand why.
