We always knew that Assassin's Creed Shadows was going to be an extremely popular release across Xbox and beyond, but Ubisoft must be really pleased to see that it passed the one-million player mark after less than 24 hours.
The news was announced on social media yesterday by the AC Shadows team:
"It's not even 4PM here in Canada and Assassin's Creed Shadows has already passed 1 million players! Thank YOU from the bottom of our hearts for joining this adventure in Feudal Japan. We are beyond excited to start this journey with you!"
Unfortunately, the "Top Paid" Xbox charts don't update regularly enough for us to know how well Assassin's Creed Shadows is faring right now on there, but we're assuming it's going to take the #1 spot from Split Fiction very soon!
The reviews have been great for Assassin's Creed Shadows as well, and here at Pure Xbox, we went 'hands on' with the game and determined that it's "an incredibly atmospheric, and deliciously dark slice of Assassin's Creed".
Have you bought Assassin's Creed Shadows yet? Tell us what you think of it in the poll and comments.

2.2 million also people tuned in for Love Island.
Strong initial numbers for less than 24 hours & not on the weekend.
5 hours in, I'm really enjoying it so far. Odyssey and Valhalla fell flat for me but this is much better.
In fairness I haven't cared about an assassin's creed game since black flag but I'm interested in playing this one after seeing what it's like hopefully it's a return to form for ubisoft!
One of the best looking games I have played. Probably the best looking one in the open world genre.
That’s players.
It doesn’t differentiate between someone who bought and kept it, bought it on Steam then tried it and refunded it, or Ubisoft plus players who paid whatever monthly fee it is to play it.
This is like EA celebrating “engagement” with Veilguard. It means exactly nothing.
How many subs does Ubisoft+ have as the current players on Steam isn't looking good.
Honestly Shadows has the best environment I've seen in any game. It's really an amazing experience. It feels magical sometimes when the wind blows in rain and under the night sky quite surreal. It's an amazing achievement for a legendary franchise that lost It's way. I'm glad Ubisoft gave the game ample time.
I am absolutely loving my time in the game so far. I can definitely feel how they pulled some of the older aspects of AC and refined it and I am enjoying the cinematic direction. It feels like a “simulation” at the right parts while allowing you to get lost in the characters (both of whom feel vibrant) in others. Also the modern aspects look interesting (haven’t tried them yet). Also like that the combat feels a bit rebalanced so far. You can take out huge groups of enemies but need to pay attention to those around you and the game will punish you if you wiff. Also the game is simply gorgeous without feeling over saturated (my issue with Ghost of Tsushima).
@Dalamar73 Just because you don't like something, it doesn't make it bad.
It's just Ubisoft releasing another game in ubisoft genre
It looks like another winner for Ubisoft and assassins creed.
It's absolutely breathtaking. Easily the most intriguing, stunning, and fluid AC of the RPG era. They've done amazingly well at not making you feel overwhelmed too, imo.
From what I've seen and heard, this is the best AC game in a very long, long time. The last one I played and enjoyed was AC Odyssey and I'm not surprised the same team made Shadows. They deserve all the success!
@dskatter. It means a million people cared enough to have bought or subbed and played the game early in the launch period? That seems reasonable enough to celebrate, even if a handful of those people then refund it. I personally did not buy it and very unlikely to do, too much backlog. But it looks cool. If it was on gamepass I'd download it
1 million players, not 1 million sales.
Glad it's doing well. It really is quite strange to see some of the comments. Is there another series that would make people so determined to see fail? It's weird. These numbers are objectively good, yet people are basically denying it, or insulting people for liking the game (see the first post).
If you don't like Ubisoft, go play something else. Stop wasting your energy.
@RentedPanda I’m just making it clear that “players” doesn’t equal “impactful income” and Ubisoft is essentially giving us a rather meaningless statistic.
We’ll see what they say a month from now. Or three to six months from now when it drops to $30.
To me as a gamer all i want to know is does the game look fun & worth my time.
From what I have seen of Shadows it very much looks to be everything I want from this type of game. So much so that after I am done with Atomfall I will likely sub to Ubi+ so i can play it.
How many others are playing or the relative success (or not) is totally irrelevant to me or the fun I think I will have with this game. I find it rather sad that folks argue um "discuss" this sort of stuff more than what the games themselves offer as an experience.
@JoyfulFire the viking one for sure I have tried and tried but just don't like it. What didn't you like about odyssey I really enjoyed that one.
I've never played ab AC game but I'm happy for the devs that it's doing well. A lot of Doom n gloom around Ubisoft so hopefully these folks jobs are safe.
I feel desperately sad for the developers.
Like Origins, Odyssey, Valhalla and Mirage, they have created a large, beautiful, rich world, with amazing graphics, loads going on and an addictive gameplay loop that is synonymous with their games.
Nothing extraordinary, obviously not for everyone and those people who didn't like the prior games shouldn't get this.
But those of us who liked those games clearly like Shadows.
All the controversy and hate is just ridiculous and embarrassing. I don't get people who don't even like the series still hating and hoping the sales figures are bad.
I don't like Souls games but you won't finding me praying that Nightreign does bad numbers.
Glad the people who are actually playing it are seemingly enjoying it ...while the predictable people who aren't playing it are automatically writing it off with there predictable cliche criticisms.
I bought a new laptop and got a free copy so I may jump in tonight....not a huge assassin's creed fan but I've played and complete quite a lot of them
Hello there fellow gamers.
Yes, I´m playing AC Shadows and I really enjoy the series as a whole ever since AC1.
This has been the setting and time period I´ve been waiting since AC2, and I´m having a blast just exploring, fighting fools and sneak my way into castles.
Once again, Ubisoft nails the open world design and it´s such a beautiful game to boot.
Have like 12 hours or so and I´m really enjoying it so far.
As long as I´m having fun playing a game, that´s all that matters.
Cheers and happy gaming
I'm rooting for Ubisoft. I haven't liked several of their recent games, but I'm still a fan of the Far Cry and Ghost Recon franchises. They've also set the bar for open world environmental detail and current gen console optimization for years.
Not surprising, there's a lot of big franchise fanboys who still pre-order this kind of thing. Kind of sad really.
@JayJ why on earth is is 'sad' that people would like and purchase this game?! I can't fathom the thinking behind that. What a bitter, unpleasant outlook on things. Just let people enjoy what they like and stop being so supercilious and condescending. And grow up a bit.
The bad faith on this site is quite alarming. And Purexbox seems just as sold out as most of the other major media outlets! Zero credibility. Take off your blinkers, this game is and will be a monstrous flop for Ubisoft.
And just because we like eating ***** doesn't mean it's good!
@Scrubchub Yeah, how dare I not cheer on blind consumerism!
I’m still trying to figure out what the deal is with the anti-Ubisoft movement. Ubisoft has been one of the more reliable gigantic publishers in the industry. Sure, they aren’t chugging out GotY tier titles and they never have been, but they also release a consistent stream of 7/10-8/10 experiences that are highly palatable and great value for players that may be strapped for cash. They’ve had a few flops recently, but they’ve not done anything as egregious as EA or Activision (or others) in the grand scheme of things. It just feels like there’s worse fish to fry and the frying for Ubisoft is set to high heat.
There’s such a divide from people that are enjoying the game and praising it and people that are dumping toxic on it.
