The Xbox 360 generation is arguably the best era of Xbox gaming, and part of its success was credited to Microsoft getting the jump on the competition at the time.
During an interview with MinnMax recently, former PlayStation boss Shuhei Yoshida was asked about the "scariest moment" in his career, and although it's apparently not the most shocking (that goes to Nintendo scooping up Monster Hunter 4 for 3DS), the first thought that came to his mind was when the Xbox 360 arrived on the scene first:
Shuhei Yoshida: "Of course, the Xbox 360 launching the year before, was very, very scary."
He didn't elaborate any further, but as noted - the Xbox 360 launched a "year before" in late November 2005 and the original PlayStation 3 followed an entire year later in November 2006 (and even later in certain other markets).
By that stage, Xbox 360 already had an established player base and library of games including titles like Gears of War (with Halo 3 to follow), even if it was dealing with the infamous 'red ring of death'.
Fast-forward to the latest generation, and Microsoft and Sony released the Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 in the same month and year of November 2020, just days apart.
Did Xbox 360 launching a year ahead of the PlayStation 3 lead you to team green? Let us know in the comments.

I loved my Xbox360s.
thanks for the good memories.
@Isolte Best generation by a country mile the amount of amazing games on the 360 just couldn't be matched again 4 gears games 4 halo games 2 GTA games fallouts,elder Scrolls games mass effect trilogy thats just off the top of my head we have had two generations since being drip feed mediocre games!!
The 360 was my first experience with XBOX and I bloody loved it. The XBOX Live Arcade era, was right up my street too. I seem to remember that you could also trial every game before buying.
What a great time that was...
Didn't Halo 3 release in late 2007?
Alas, it was the best gen for many as all consoles sold well enough, but a part from the DS, they all sold much more closely to one another than any other gen.
The only thing bad about that generation was I had to buy like 4 or 5 xboxs with red rings and disc drive failures killing them ha!
360 was the best ever n will never be beaten imo. Way ahead of its time. Getting in from college/work n getting party chat 8 of ya mates on cod were the days 😠plus xbla for the indies was ace looked for to those Xbox summer arcade things they did. Then it all fell apart next genðŸ˜ðŸ˜ðŸ˜
@acmiguens Yes, of course! 😅
@Ricky-Spanish Wow, that's unlucky! I never had any RR issues during the 360 gen, but my original Xbox disc drive no longer wants to load discs.
I wonder what the industry would look like if the red ring of death had never happened....
And then Mattrick on top of that...
It wasn't just that the console launched early it was the sheer amount of games that launched in the first couple of years of the X360 and the graphical upgrade it offered over anything else on the market for at least a year. It felt like a GIANT leap. As I've said here before I had my PS2 was saving for a PS3 but one look at Gears of War and the cinematic Roadie Run and I went and bought a 360 the next day.
I have fond memories of trading in pretty much every gaming item I owned to get a 360 with Gears, Rainbow Six Vegas and Saints Row. It was my first year of Uni, I had a ton of free time and I just loved every second of playing those games. It was the last time a generational leap actually felt like a leap.
@themightyant yeah, Dreamcast also launched ahead of PS2 and that did not help Sega. So much more to the 360 success than just launching one year ahead of the competition.
Stop reminding us about how good Xbox used to be with these articles! I have to agree with what others have said here, Xbox 360 and PS3 was the best generation for me also. Think the whole HD graphics was exciting to me and seeing how good they could become.
Not only launched a year ahead, but had powerful hardware at an affordable price and I'd argue that the 360's launch-day lineup is one of, possibly the best, in the history of gaming.
And then came the Xbox One lol!
Man, we've come one hell of a long way since then, thankfully!
Wonder if launching a year ahead was good or bad idea. MS got ahead of the competition and I managed to get hold of one early and initially loved it, but getting ahead they possibly cut corners resulting in the RROD problems which soured the 360 for me. Once I got RROD I waited for the PS3 to release to get that instead and didn't bother with the XB One.
@Liam_Doolan Yeah I had some bad luck with the original 360 console version I had one that would only play discs if I kept banging on the top of the console towards the end but it lasted a good year probably like that haha 😂
I bought Xbox 360 Halo Reach Limited Edition (with 2 controllers) and still keeping it.
UNSC Pillar of Autumn themed console and controllers are lovely.
Even the disk drive has sound effect with Master Chief's Shield Charge sound.
Can not be more happy...
I got infinite good memories with;
The launch price of the x360 is what helped it. The x360 launched for $400,$500 here and the ps3 came along and launched at $650,$700,$750,$800. Then the ps3 only had limited ps2 backwards compatibility.
