EA has put out a new statement (via Eurogamer) on the future of its Need for Speed series, as it ends support for 2022's Need for Speed Unbound. The last NFS entry had an extended life cycle, where EA went on to "use their [fans] feedback to create content for Unbound", but developer Criterion Games is now fully working on Battlefield 6.
And, ultimately, that means that no NFS game is in active development right now. Need for Speed Unbound came out three years after NFS Heat — which in itself proved a longer wait than usual — but franchise fans will now have to be very patient for the next entry in the series.
"The Need for Speed team at Criterion are joining their colleagues working on Battlefield,
As a company, it was important to us to take the last year to listen to our Need for Speed community and use their feedback to create content for Unbound."
Fear not though, NFS fans, the series is definitely set to return at some stage. The statement went on to say that "with an increased understanding of what our players want in a Need for Speed experience, we plan to bring the franchise back in new and interesting ways", which should be music to the ears of longtime Need for Speeders.
Back in late 2022, we checked out Need for Speed Unbound's opening hours, and definitely felt like it was a step in the right direction for the series after Criterion took the reins once again. The British studio is now helping out on the next Battlefield game, which will be starting a huge playtesting program in the coming weeks.
NFS fans, were you hoping for another entry sooner rather than later? Talk to us about this revelation down below.

The last NFS I truly enjoyed was Carbon.
After that there were some good ones, but all ended up a little short.
I personally think Forza could do with making another spin off. They have Motorsport, and they have Horizon, but I think a new spin off that equates to something along the lines of a story-based NFS Most Wanted, kinda like classic Fast and Furious, would be a massive move for them, and the series.
they haven’t made a good NFS in a long time. i hope midnight club can come back one of these days, or split-second. i need an arcade racer so bad. i tried the horizon series but they’re too slow paced or feel like simulators to me
Need for speed is great in a "B movie" sense. I hope they maintain the corny narrative that they are known for in any future reboot. This is still one of the best racing franchises out there in my opinion.
I like the Need for Speed games but I like Battlefield more so yeah just focus on making a great Battlefield game
@Kaloudz
I wish they would do another Project Gotham Racing. Got into this series only a few years ago (courtesy of X360 emulation on my ROG Ally) but I really liked it. Especially PGR3.
Imagine a Codemasters developed NFS. That would be interesting.
I can't imagine them abandoning one of their flagships, but this is good to hear.
How many times has EA put NFS on ice and brought it back now?
Unbound killed the series.
NFSU 1+2 HD remaster €59,99 instant profit.
@Kaloudz holy sh*t. This would be amazing actually.
NFS has been long overdue for a rest. How about letting Criterion have a stab at doing a new Burnout. Or dare I say... a new Road Rash?
Fans have been asking for decades, about time you actually listened to them.
They should use this time to come up with some proper opponent A.I. rather than relying on that rubber band bs.
@Guru_Larry come on now, EA isn't in the business of customer satisfaction.
@Markatron84 If you mean by satisfaction, royally pissing them off, then yes.
@Champalimo I wish that could be true but they were developed by Black Box iirc and the licensing for the music would be a hassle to go through.
I like Need for Speed when I was rioting around town, tearing down buildings, and running from police officers.
@gollumb82 Oh man, PGR would be an amazing return. Can you imagine if PG took a poke at that?!
@IssaBrvndo It just fits doesn't it? Not that I dislike Horizon, but it gets a bit samey samey.
@Kaloudz agree on both fronts. Horizon does get a bit repetitive. Man. I really wish they did that. Forza: Street. Or something along those lines.
@IssaBrvndo Exactly! Horizon was a great detour from Motorsport, but something like Forza: Street (epic naming) would be welcome. We will have to see what this year brings (assuming PG release a new entry this year.
