Well, it's now officially confirmed - DOOM: The Dark Ages is releasing for Xbox, Game Pass, and other platforms on May 15, 2025. This title has obviously been in the pipeline for some time now, and with this in mind, multiple outlets have already experienced guided previews of the new prequel entry.
The first impressions seem quite promising - so here is what the critics think of this new entry after testing out the game in the presence of director Hugo Martin and executive producer Marty Stratton:
Beginning with IGN's deep dive, it's noted how the game "pivots from Eternal’s platforming and instead literally grounds its combat in strafe-heavy gameplay with an emphasis on power":
"Sure, the great guns are still there – this is Doom, after all!...But The Dark Ages also places a huge premium on your three melee weapons: the default electrified gauntlet, which can be charged up; the flail; and the star of the reveal trailer from last summer, the Shield Saw, which can be thrown or used to block, parry, or deflect. “You’re gonna stand and fight,” game director Hugo Martin said..."
Game Rant also shares some details about the weapons players can expect to get up close and personal with:
"Great care has clearly been taken in ensuring Doom: The Dark Ages pays homage to older Doom games, some of which id Software played a lot during development. Most of the game's guns are short-to-medium range, encouraging the player to get up close and personal during combat. Enemy types will be varied and will feature a mixture of new and more recognizable fiends for Doom Slayer to take care of."
Polygon notes how The Dark Ages aims to make the control system a little less complicated:
"The Slayer will also have a variety of melee weapons at his disposal, including a gauntlet, a chunky iron mace, and a whipping flail. Those weapons’ attacks are contextual too, as id Software aims to simplify the game’s inputs, a course correction from the more complicated control scheme of Eternal."
CGM adds to this point, mentioning how it results in a more "engaging and rewarding" gameplay loop:
"While DOOM: The Dark Ages introduces more complex and exciting ways to dispatch foes, ID Software has worked diligently to streamline the controls. The philosophy behind this change is that with a simplified control layout, the game can demand more from players, creating a more engaging and rewarding gameplay loop."
And Inverse mentions how it's set to be the perfect entry point for newcomers, and just as promising for returning fans:
"The power fantasy of being a potent demon slayer armed to the teeth with insane weapons and abilities looks more appealing and approachable than ever. And for returning fans, the next iteration of what id does best — tweaking the core of Doom to create unique first-person shooters — looks just as engrossing as its two genre-defining predecessors."
This has definitely got us excited here at Pure Xbox to learn and see more of DOOM: The Dark Ages in the coming months, so stay tuned for future updates.

I will say this game has piqued my interest, and since it will be on Gamepass day one I will check it out.
It was a really good showing of Doom. Looks incredible.
Avowed and MH for feb, expedition 33 April and doom in may means I’m sorted for the start of the year!
That sounds really promising.
My concern from the direct is the attempt to add in 'more freedom' to explore and play your way sounds a bit like AAA bloat and I hope that's not the case.
I also didn't need the lore transferred to cutscenes. I felt the codex was preferable to the attempt to tell the 'story' in Eternal and this one seems to want to go further down that route.
I'm not sure Doom needs any more than a cursory story.
This is one of my #1 anticipated for the year, alongside Shadows. I absolutely love what they seem to be doing with Doom, it's a step up imo (to take an already great formula and shake it on its head) - which is high praise seeing that Doom and Doom Eternal were outstanding.
Was sold from the first trailer. Nothing has changed that. A must play.
The most interesting preview is CGM's. It's also the only one that goes beyond what was said yesterday.
Id is a very consistent developer that, besides helping other Xbox studios like Rare and The Coalition have been doing, know exactly what they are doing at every stage of the development. That's the best achievement if you are in a business like this. It's something you see when you hear them talk about their games and when you get to play them. They are so-well thought and Doom The Dark Ages seems the most ambitious yet.
I love Doom Eternal and its acrobatics, it's one of my favourite shooters ever, surpassing solid platform-shooters like Metroid Prime, but Doom The Dark Ages is more Doom.
Really looking forward to this one. South of Midnight and Expedition 33 may both pique my curiosity more, but it’s so obvious Doom is going to be Doom that I can’t wait. We know it may be the first genuine GotY contender this year, unless we get some other release date surprises soon.
Doom will no doubt continue to set the standard for fps shooters in graphics/mechanics and mostly importantly of all, kinetic, frantic, no holds barred fun. The emphasis on melee sounds interesting. It works so well in VR with Asgards Wrath 2 for example but on the flat screen there is surely no developer better at immersing us in the chaos and action than ID Software.
@Kaloudz very true. They know exactly how to take something great and freshen it up with a few new aspects. For example, the difference in combat between Doom and Doom Eternal is quite pronounced if you flip flop between them. It can make it briefly challenging to go back to an earlier game but I'm all for the creative evolution of any game series. Something Farcry never managed.
@16BitHero Exactly right (which is why I'd love them to take a poke at Halo) I'm hoping that this return to the classics (strife and shoot) sort of play translates well, but knowing them, it will be absolutely flawless. They're the one FPS dev that know what we want, before we even know it ourselves lol.
@Kaloudz oh gosh I didn't even think about that. They could do an incredible Halo. Xbox really needs to leverage it's studios into making what they do best and this is a prime example.
@16BitHero It just seems like a match made in heaven doesn't it lol. 343 are good (I enjoyed their Halo games - bar Halo 5) but they're so expensive to run and I feel they'd be better doing something else. iD and Halo just feels to me like reincarnation. <3
