Id Software is back, and their next game is out sooner than you might think! Bethesda's FPS expert has announced that DOOM: The Dark Ages is launching in just a few short months on May 15, 2025 - and it'll be available day one on Game Pass now that the studio is a part of Team Xbox.
This has all been announced during today's Xbox Developer Direct showcase, where the team gave us a very detailed look at the new DOOM game. Id Software says that this is a "perfect entry point into the series" with a "more approachable" take on gameplay - but that by no means equates to an easy DOOM game. The Dark Ages is simply adding more options for players to take the game on however they please.
Elsewhere, we're getting "the largest play space ever in a DOOM game", containing "some of the most ridiculously powerful weapons we've ever created" - including the 'Shield Saw'; The Dark Ages' new signature weapon. It all looks bloody bombastically brilliant, and we recommend checking out the team's new trailer up above if you haven't already.
Finally, the dev also confirmed that music studio Finishing Move is handling the soundtrack this time out, following the series' split with Mick Gordon after DOOM Eternal. We'll have to see how the franchise's famous audio tracks weave into The Dark Ages, with Finishing Move previously working on Halo, Borderlands 3, The Callisto Protocol and more.

I loved Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal, and was skeptical they could outdo those, and it looks like they've done exactly that. It's new doom with new mechanics and a gameplay refresh. Can't bloody wait.
This is what I want from Doom, not jumping around and dashing like Eternal. Just lots of guns and lots of enemies to shoot. There is no game this year that I'm more excited for
This going to be next level.
I’m excited. 😳
I loved Doom 2016.
Doom eternal was good but I didn’t like how you needed a specific weapon to take down a certain enemy.
I hope they’ve moved away from that formula and we can just blast away with our preferred weapons.
Looks cool though I have to say.
Doom 2016 is one of my favourite games ever!
I sometimes just play through until the opening splash screen because of how epic that opening is.
But I didn't love Eternal nearly as much and I'm getting the 'AAA' jitters with this one as I'm worried that they are just trying to out do themselves when more of the same would have been perfect.
To be honest, this is exactly why I play videogames. Pure adrenaline rush in the comfort of your own home.
This game looks awesome. I like how they are deliberately changing the core gameplay each time (run and gun, platforming, to tank) but still maintaining the unique Doom feel.
Xbox makes the best shooters and it doesn't appear to be close.
If they dialed back the platforming, I'm in.
@BacklogBrad You mean Bethesda?
@carlos82 Oh my YES!!!
I did not even bother last Doom game. Was too difficult. Didn't flow right. Just not enjoyable on any level for me.
@Doublecell Nope. He meant it as overall Xbox. You know since Xbox owns Bethesda now.
I was hitting everything in my living room with excitement 😬 Those metal tunes really got me going
Let's bloody go. DOOM was fantastic. DOOM Eternal was good but by about three quarters of the way through I was ready for it to be over, and there was way too much aerial guff. This looks much more like a return to the 2016 game and I'm so in.
@Doublecell you mean id Software?
Doom Eternal is one of my favourite shooters ever. I didn't like Doom 2016, but I know I'll love Doom The Dark Ages, even without the acrobatics that only I on this thread loved. The shield makes a lot of sense with the head-on combat.
I've loved all the doom variations. This one looks killer!
Hello there fellow gamers.
I´m a big fan of Doom 2016 like many others, but didn´t quite like Doom Eternal new gameplay style.
This one though, I´m all in.
Love the idea that you are like a tank that just buldozes trough everything.
And the new parry mechanic alongside the new melee combat looks so fun to pull off.
And then there´s the Mech and the Dragon Mount.
Yeah, I´m sold on this one, for sure.
And even though Mick Gordon won´t return for the OST after what happened with Doom Eternal, the new composers from Finishing Move seem to be doing a pretty good job. So there is that.
Cheers and happy gaming
