Today, a new ESRB rating for Resident Evil 6 has been spotted online, with Capcom's 2012 Xbox 360 title looking set for another re-release in some form. To be clear, the Japanese developer hasn't announced a new version of RE6 in any way at this time - so the exact nature of this rating is still quite mysterious.
What we do know is that the rating, carried out by the US game ratings board, is for Resident Evil 6 on Xbox Series X|S. At the time of writing, this game only exists on Xbox 360 and Xbox One - with the latter being playable via backwards compatibility on Microsoft's current-gen Xbox machines.
Given that Capcom hasn't announced anything regarding RE6 on Xbox Series consoles, we'd be surprised if this is a modern Resi remake in the same vein as 2023's Resident Evil 4. It could be a more simple port like the Xbox One release, but with Resident Evil 5 not being mentioned here, we're left puzzled by what this rating could be for.
However, one final wrinkle to this story is Xbox Developer Direct later this week. This title is by no means confirmed for the show or anything, but we have heard rumours that Microsoft's surprise game of the show is "a new entry in a legendary Japanese IP which has decades of history". Resident Evil certainly fits that description, as we mentioned in a separate article today, and the timing of this is very curious indeed - even if we still think an RE appearance is unlikely.
Anyway, we suppose we'll just have to wait and see what happens with both Xbox Dev Direct and this mysterious new version of Resident Evil 6. When it comes to the Xbox showcase itself, we'll know exactly what's been revealed by end-of-day on Thursday, January 23rd.
What do we think this version of RE6 could be? Talk to us about this one down in the comments section.

They said "studio’s brand new game". Not sure this applies, would be a bit disappointed if it's in the Direct, it's a remaster not a new game.
RE6 is easily the worst in the series. It relies on far too many "cinematic" sequences where players just spam a single button to move on, and the co-op is incredibly disappointing compared to the solid gameplay of RE5. For RE6, anything less than a complete remake would be a terrible idea.
That would be the worst surprise reveal in the history of surprise reveals… 😬
I enjoyed this one a LOT more than 5 or anything after.
Still, I don't really see a reason for it.
It's most definitely not a re-release of RE6... the franchise was course-corrected as a result of that game.
I doubt they would use a remaster or rerelease as a reveal on their showcase.
6 wouldn’t be a “new” entry…
Why didn't they do resident evil 5 remake first??
More popular and better game!!🤷
Unless they are doing it as well and nobody knows yet!!
The surprise isn't RE 6. Will we hear of it? Maybe, but that won't be the main event.
That said, I'd say that this adds weight to Capcom being there in some capacity for something else (unless the timing here is total coincidence - which it could be).
Dino Crisis, maybe?
It's anyone's guess now, but given how much SE has been blowing the multiplat trumpet lately, I'd lean towards them being related to the surprise game. I think Capcom are on that big a roll at the moment that they don't need any platform's exclusive space to make a big announcement. Then again, doing so wouldn't hurt them either, so it's not out of the realm of possibility.
@Kaloudz I hope so we need Dino crisis remake 😭 would be a massive thing to have at the show just that along would make it the highest rank on vote/poll here after 🤣
It actually makes a lot of sense if they're planning on re-releasing it or remastering it etc if.... Resident Evil 9 is a direct sequel to 6.
I mean, they could also be remaking it and tweaking the story so that it takes place before 5. I wouldn't mind that either because 5 is in a lot of ways the climax of the story that began with S.T.A.R.S. And 6 is the worst imo so it definitely needs remaking.
@Utena-mobile For me, they'd need to remake a lot of the gameplay too. RE6 had far too much walking-sim in it for my liking.
@Decimateh Dino Crisis is a definite must, especially on the back of the major success RE has had since the remakes. Totally agree too, I think it'd dominate the polls.
@Kaloudz haha, yeah. The only thing I liked from 6 was the fan art of Piers and Chris.
@Kaloudz definitely would on pretty sure tli saw something about ago did they ask what people wanted remaking and sure that was one most mentioned they should remake one and 2 and also code Veronica 😎
@Utena-mobile Piers 😭❤️ also, was I the only one to hate Jake? What an annoying donkey.
@Decimateh I think the ONLY reason we haven't seen Code Veronica remake (so far) is because of the brother / sister ordeal. I'm not sure the current social climate could handle such a thing 😅
@Kaloudz people these days can't handle anything though should just do it n say ✌️ if don't like it 🤣
@Decimateh Isn't that the truth 🤣 imagine the modern day voice actor for the brother / sister, and... dare I say it... Steve (I hated the original VA).
"Wahhhhh don't shoot" will haunt me forever.
I've always said RE6's "survival action" gameplay would be perfect for a new Dino Crisis
Resident Evil 6 is an amazing video game, probably one of the best "summer blockbuster" tier action flicks morphed into a videogame.
Buuuuut it's not a good Resident Evil game. They really should've named it anything else, hell it may have even fared better with the Revelations sub-series name.
And it would be incredibly bizarre if this was the secret announcement... like what? I guess it would be confirmation that RE6 would not receive a remake but still, huh?
Guess xs enhanced not remake
Hope not firstly it's not a new game and secondly re6 is awful!
Its probably 4-6 again before they get to full on remakes for the latter 2...
....but would be hilarious if they found a way to rerererererererereresell RE4 HD Edition even after the remake.
