Look, we're not saying the two things are connected here, but it's certainly some funny timing! It's been discovered SEGA filed trademarks in late December for one of its classic...or should we say "legendary" IP that's now decades old.
The trademarks are for 'Ecco the Dolphin' and 'Ecco' - an action-adventure series that first surfaced on the SEGA Mega Drive / Genesis in 1992 and was developed by the team at Novotrade International (Appaloosa Interactive).
Once again, this oddly times in with a claim from Windows Central yesterday about a "legendary Japanese IP" with "decades of history" being revealed at the upcoming Xbox Developer Direct next week. Sure enough, it's led to some amusing jokes on social media.
Before we get too carried away here, new trademarks don't always result in an immediate announcement or news. SEGA also delisted multiple games and collections in the earlier half of the same month last year, so maybe it's planning another retro revival.
If we hear any significant updates, we'll let you know. Would you like to see this series make a splash on Xbox in the future? Let us know in the comments.

Ecco is one of the most overrated piles of gaming hell ever made.
Once out of the opening area it is just terrible.
Can't say I enjoyed it first time around but hopefully they have good ideas for the reboot!
If Ecco is the surprise announcement for the fourth game at the Developer Direct, surprise would be an understatement.
As for the developer direct fourth mystery game…I don’t see how Ecco the Dolphin has “decades of history” but I could see how a sequel could align with Sega’s future plans to revitalize old IP’s like Crazy Taxi, Streets of Rage, Golden Axe, Jet Set and more
I'm all for a new Ecco game. Tides of Time is still good and it's a unique puzzle based game.
Dolphins are pretty evil, irl. Almost as evil as people can be. Never played any of the Ecco games, but I hope it's like an underwater Grand Theft Auto kind of game.
They better re-release or remaster or whatever the Dreamcast Ecco the Dolphin game.
Also those games were pure nightmare fuel. I don't know if anyone remembers that since the rest of the game was pretty brutal.
I played on the Sega Megadrive, no Ecco, but it was fun like this, return
Fair, but give me some Saturn, Dreamcast or even some OG Xbox era IPs Sega..... sigh will never happen. Ecco is fine but eh. Then again the later entries not just the Genesis ones would be nice but why would Sega do that when they can milk the same Genesis games over and over.
Atari and Sega really know how to make me not care about their old IPs and just milk the same things different ways and not in exciting ways and audiences eat it up.
Plenty of others to cover that would be nice.
Even some CD or 32X games would be nice. The niche stuff they won't touch I want to see.
Give me a Sega GT/Rally without licenses, will never happen.
Give us Outrun 2 type of game without the Ferrari license not just Outrun older entries. The closest we got to something different was the 3DS version with 3D or the Sega Classics Collection that remade them in 3D in some shape or form which I think was fair.
@SuntannedDuck2 I'm with you on wanting to see those later games make a comeback. However, I think an all-new Ecco game would still be great to see. Reviving an IP that's largely tied to the 16-bit era is very different from simply releasing those games again.
As far as re-releases, though, we've bought those old Genesis games already (maybe more than once!), and it's time for some Saturn, Dreamcast, Xbox, Model 2, Master System, 32X, Sega CD, etc. etc.! They have a gold mine of games and IPs, so I hope that the recently announced revivals do well, and that they continue to tap into their broader history- both with sequels/reboots and with straight remasters.
PS: Seeing as those stale Genesis games just got delisted, does that mean they're going to release them yet again? As apathetic as I am about getting to buy Kid Chameleon again, I do think games should be re-released and kept available indefinitely, if at all possible.
@smoreon If a new game that's fine whether 16 bit like Streets of Rage 4 getting a studio to do something like that is totally fine.
But just re-newing the license for the 16bit entries for collections can be boring.
I hope the Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio & others do well/have good ideas in them it's going to be interesting seeing compared to Outrun 2 or others the arcade like design modernised in this modern era/just in general cutting ties with arcade design, just having it be very open world missions for either of them in a modern sense.
I'd like to see some very Burnout Paradise or others type using the taxi in interesting ways type missions but who knows. I don't play Forza Horizon or NFS Unbound or The Crew so I have no idea what modern open worlds are like. I find many character based ones super boring as the worlds are 'fine' but not playground enough or moveset/mission gameplay fun enough for me to care/buy them so I'm buying up old ones as to me they sort of balance out gameplay ideas in ways I prefer.
Then again linear games same thing I prefer old games not the cinematic/immersive angle & movesets are just so boring when older games had that design I was looking for with level design that complimented how characters played not played nowadays or too many collect, talk, fight missions too.
I'm only getting around to NFS games more these days (played almost all the circuit/highway/menu ones) even & just about 3/4 of the way through Carbon (have yet to try more of MW 2012) for the first time I don't know what the current open world racing game landscape/game design is like to comment on it. I tried Forza Horizon 1 & 3 & just didn't care.
Bomb Rush Cyberfunk I assume does a fair job and Jet Set Radio can find it's own way to stand out?
Among other revivals I may be missing here.
Then again I haven't played the House of the Dead remake either so no clue. I've bought all the Gal Gun games to get my rail shooter fix & working my way through older rail shooters on Wii I haven't experienced.
It's not a genre I'm that into but still I'm trying new things when I can. Like I did many hack n slashes, visual novels, tactics RPGs, etc. when other genres just weren't appealing of some IP directions anymore/branching out of modern/retro eras was worth it.
Then again I liked The Club (shooting gallery but modern controls/few modern elements) but I liked Project Gotham Racing as well so Bizarre Creations arcade but modern design always appealed to me ever since getting into arcade style games when I usually didn't but seeing as I enjoy challenges or other short experience stuff in some games besides their campaigns (racing, action adventure, etc.) i guess it make sense why I've gotten into arcadey style games over time then racing sims or other things.
@smoreon Part 2
Who knows. Hard to say. My guess is if they have to re-new licenses maybe eventually they may try another collection or sub service or something likely instead? (besides NSO. Their own maybe? Or different Sega forever on mobile approach on consoles). Collections back compat either. Anything is possible, it's hard to say.
I don't hate re-releases but after a while it does become questionable which IPs, how they handle it, etc. I don't have nostalgia for them as no my era but have enjoyed what I can of the games in the 360 era collection physical to fill in gaps of IPs I've never played of old eras, I didn't buy the Xbox One era collection but have researched it.
Popular IPs make sense to be covered but I do just sigh and go whelp great to see but I'd prefer to see others instead even with the Push Square article and the IPs shown there of wants on the PS+ service I was like these are good but eh I'd rather see others instead. Regardless of if I own a handful of them or not heard of some and go yeah ok those do deserve some support and regardless of second hand market prices making sense as well.
Then again re-releases on Steam (& those that already own them in their libraries) versus how obviously console eshops are these days and account/purchase carry over has been fair on Xbox I guess with back compat and stuff of course.
