Phil Spencer's Recent Gears Activity Seemingly Has Nothing To Do With Rumoured Remasters

A week or so ago, Gears fans with a keen eye spotted Xbox boss Phil Spencer revisiting the old Xbox 360 games for the first time in over a decade - prompting fresh discussion about a potential 'Marcus Fenix Collection', as has long been rumoured. While the boss has neither confirmed nor denied such a collection existing, we do now know the reason behind Phil loading up those old Gears games.

Talking to former IGN staffer Destin Legarie, Phil briefly touched on why he'd been playing Gears 1 through 3 recently. Basically, someone who Phil works with missed out on playing the old GoW games back in the day - so the two of them have been revisiting the original trilogy as of late.

"Quick story, a friend of mine who I work with, she's younger than I am - she never played the Gears games. So, we're going through and playing Gears — started on 1, we're now on 3 — they're all co-op so we're playing together,"

Phil's little story was part of a discussion about why fans will continue to see Xbox as a viable option when more and more of its games go multiplatform. The Xbox boss used the example of seamless game saves — pulled all the way from 2011 in the case of Gears of War 3 — as one reason behind continuing to engage with Xbox as an ecosystem well into the future. The full interview is definitely worth a watch, if you haven't already.

Anyway, yeah - for any Xbox fans who hoped this achievement activity would lead to news about a Marcus Fenix Collection, it's probably best to smother those hopes for now. Still, we had a hunch that there was a reason behind Phil going back in time to play some classic Gears of War; now we have our answer.
