BioWare's 'Core Team' Working On Mass Effect 5 While Some Devs Move To Other EA Studios

BioWare, the developer behind Mass Effect and Dragon Age, has posted a new studio update as the team looks ahead to its next title. With development on The Veilguard now complete, and no DLC currently in the works, the studio has slimmed down and refocused - with Mass Effect 5 firmly on the agenda.

Yep, this new update continues BioWare's commitment to more Mass Effect; this time explaining a bit more about how the studio is restructuring to make ME5 a reality. The Canadian studio now has "a core team" working on its upcoming sci-fi RPG, and some developers who helped make The Veilguard come to life have moved to other teams within EA.

"Now that Dragon Age: The Veilguard has been released, a core team at BioWare is developing the next Mass Effect game under the leadership of veterans from the original trilogy, including Mike Gamble, Preston Watamaniuk, Derek Watts, Parrish Ley, and others.

In keeping with our fierce commitment to innovating during the development and delivery of Mass Effect, we have challenged ourselves to think deeply about delivering the best experience to our fans. We are taking this opportunity between full development cycles to reimagine how we work at BioWare.

Given this stage of development, we don’t require support from the full studio. We have incredible talent here at BioWare, and so we have worked diligently over the past few months to match many of our colleagues with other teams at EA that had open roles that were a strong fit."

BioWare closes out its new statement by saying that the team is now "a more agile, focused studio" aiming to "produce unforgettable RPGs", starting with the next Mass Effect. We'd imagine the developer will staff up later down the line when the project starts to come together.

On that note, it's probably best to expect quite a wait for Mass Effect 5. Dragon Age fans had to exercise 10 years of patience for a new entry after Inquisition, and we reckon it's going to be similar wait for Mass Effect fans following 2017's Andromeda, likely even longer. Here's hoping it all comes together when BioWare is properly ready to deliver its next big sci-fi RPG.
