We're now two days away from The Game Awards 2024, and everything we're hearing behind the scenes suggests it'll be a fantastic show. However, if you're hoping for lots of Xbox first-party news, this may not be the venue for it.
Windows Central editor Jez Corden is the latest industry name to begin teasing what he knows about The Game Awards, and just like many others, he's clearly very excited after learning more about it. That said, he doesn't "expect" too many reveals from Xbox's range of studios due to plans for a third Xbox Developer Direct event in early 2025.
Just recently, it was rumoured that Xbox's South of Midnight could be getting a release date at The Game Awards, but Jez responded to this with a simple "no". It seems the Developer Direct could be the destination for that instead.
In any case, The Game Awards looks set to be very exciting from a multi-platform perspective, so even without Xbox making a big splash, we'll still get plenty of games announced for our Xbox consoles. Then, the Xbox Developer Direct typically takes place in January, so we might only be waiting about a month to get more extensive first-party news!
What do you think we'll see at The Game Awards 2024? Let us know down in the comments below.

Sounds like a very good reason to watch this the day after it is broadcast. That way I can skip through everything that doesn't appeal to me, and should be able to get the 3 hours show down to something like 30 minutes once all the adverts, musical interludes and interviews that hold no interest for me are excluded...
That seems sensible. Their Jan/Feb event is usually excellent. But it would be nice to have some presence.
I think it’s great for Xbox to do their own thing.
But they need to keep their pulse on the wider audience as well to get new customers in.
@themightyant I think the developer direct is well established enough now that they dont need to dilute it by putting announcements at TGAs. Unless they have a surprise remaster or GP drop they need to be pushing Indy, Flight Sim and Stalker
@Fiendish-Beaver I've never respected the game awards enough to watch it live 😂. I'll go on Xbox wire the next day and read the recap.
I honestly have no idea what to expect with TGA currently. The release slate is basically empty, even though we know some games are coming next year, but there’s no release dates for anything. As of right now, I hope there’s some surprises with concrete release dates, so I can hopefully plan out my purchases for next year.
@elpardo1984 But they serve different purposes. Developer Direct is usually a close look at a handful of games coming this year. Whereas Game Awards they could just have a trailer or similar, either of the same games, or different ones.
The main difference is that The Game Awards has many times more eyeballs on it than the Direct, it's important Xbox has some sort of presence I feel. It doesn't have to be either/or, it can be BOTH.
@elpardo1984 some Xbox fans would probably complain, but the game awards would be a great moment to market recent ecosystem expansions and major milestones to non xbox gamers. I could see a trailer going over all the massive hits every month since August (AOM, Black Ops 6, Flight Sim, Stalker 2, and Indy), and on a wider scale talk about being able to play games you own on Xbox Cloud Gaming. It'd also be a great time to either throw in a few secret game pass drops (like TGS) or add another 50 to 100 games to the owned games cloud gaming list.
I don't think TGS should be for major first party announcements for fans, but it's a great stage for a victory lap and to pull together all the recent Xbox news into one big announcement. Realistically, how many people actually know you can played owned games on your phone with cloud gaming now (and some games like Hades are up there with the touch controls they had when they were on game pass). People still aren't that aware of long standing major Xbox features like Play Anywhere. Do major first party new announcements at first party events, but Xbox shouldn't shy away from even just repeating information at the third party events which pull in wider gaming audiences.
Might watch it live, but honestly I nornally end up liking 2% of the stuff, so I'm not sure.
I don't expect much from xbox at the show. Maybe a gamepass announcement or two. I don't expect any new game revealed. Best case scenario, one known game has another short trailer. I doubt nintendo or Playstation will have much either. First parties seem to save their games for their own shows.
Since mafia and borderlands are now confirmed I am wondering what other big trailers will be there. 2-3 solid surprises would make it a good show (except for the 3+ hours of nonsense it takes to see these trailers).
I bet xbox announces a controller.
@OldGamer999 While I agree that Xbox needs to keep their pulse on the wider audience… TGA is not it. TGA doesn’t really have that much of wide appeal. neither Sony or Nintendo has had much presence at this show, and they are very well. Xbox has had a lot of major announcements at this show… and it really has done nothing for them.
Xbox will have almost zero presence if there is early 2025 showcase… maybe a few trailers for games going to PS5 … very low expectations
Hopefully some 3rd party/indie stuff please 🥺
XBOX has one major problem with if they announced everything that they have on their plate for 2025 at The Game Awards...
With Activision, Blizzard and Bethesda, along with their own output, they have, if anything, too many companies which likely have something cooking.
Smells like black myth wukong announcement.
I wonder if some games that had timed exclusivity on PS that expired can be announced too.
I am talking the likes of stray/sifu back in a day.
