To kick off The Game Awards this year, Koei Tecmo announced it was teaming up with Dotemu (TMNT: Shredder's Revenge) and The Game Kitchen (Blasphemous) to release a brand-new 2D action side-scroller entry in the legendary Ninja Gaiden series.
It's officially titled Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound and will star the new hero, Kenji Mozu. The story follows on from the departure of Ryu Hayabusa, who goes off to avenge his father's death. This game will be coming to the Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One in summer 2025.
Here's the official PR and you can check out the game trailer above:
A new hero, Kenji Mozu, emerges in NINJA GAIDEN: Ragebound. The story picks up in Hayabusa Village after Ryu Hayabusa heads to America to avenge his father's death, as told in the NES version of NINJA GAIDEN. Suddenly, the veil between the human and demon worlds has torn, opening a doorway to darkness in Hayabusa Village. Kenji Mozu, a young ninja of the Hayabusa clan, throws himself into battle, determined to protect his village and its people from a looming demonic threat in this dark and dangerous era.
Featuring a mastery of the high-speed, challenging combat the series is known for, NINJA GAIDEN: Ragebound’s sidescrolling action is immediately welcoming to newcomers - while offering a steep, rewarding sense of difficulty and intricate technical depth that will challenge the blade of even a seasoned ninja. Brutally slash through an array of fiendish foes and demons while avoiding deadly fiery traps, spike pits, chasms and more.
The young ninja, Kenji Mozu’s high-stakes quest develops with showstopping fights against powerful, boss-caliber behemoths. With upgradable abilities, hidden collectibles, optional mission objectives and more, NINJA GAIDEN: Ragebound is an engrossing modernization of the tense, satisfyingly swift battles and precise, skill-demanding platforming the series is known for.
NINJA GAIDEN: Ragebound features exquisite pixel art, evoking the classic title while bringing a lush field and menacing cast of enemies to life through striking, wonderfully intricate detail. The dynamic action, paired with a pitch-perfect soundtrack featuring contributions from special guest composers, promises players an unforgettable experience.
If you're in the mood for some Ninja Gaiden right now, you can always check out the Master Collection on Xbox - which contains Koei Tecmo's 3D outings. The classic title Ninja Gaiden Black is also available.
Looking forward to this one? Let us know in the comments.

I'm a big fan of both the classic and the new Ninja Gaiden games, so this is really cool.
This looked great. Possibly inspired by some modern classics like CyberShadow
This is the style of Ninja Gaiden I remember. For some reason I could never get into the modern ones.
Oh snap a “real” Ninja Gaiden game?! I respect the 3D ones but have always wished for a return to form. The DS game was the closest but still not the format (or control style) that I wanted. I’m hoping this will be good. 2025 is starting to feel like third party gaming I care about. Just need a TES6 surprise announcement at this point.
This looks sick. Love the 80s vibes. I hope this does as well as Iga's Bloodstained games. Those have awesome soundtracks, bite sized levels, challenge, lots of hidden goodies and challenging gameplay. Stage 5 Sunset the Night theme song?! Doesn't get any better https://youtu.be/FUIylfsY2v8?feature=shared
This is easily one of my most anticipated games. I grew up with this franchise (the 2D side scroller), and bought the reboot day one when it released on the OG Xbox. This looks like it might reach the same heights as the other games. I can’t wait!
Super hyped, thought i was watching footage from the new shinobi but massively surprised it was a new 2d ninja gaiden, ohmygod. Both the goats returning
