Update [Fri 8th Nov, 2024]:
In September, Xbox mentioned how it was reintroducing friend requests on Xbox. Now, in an update this week, they're available to everyone across Xbox's platforms and services. Here's another look, courtesy of The Verge's senior editor Tom Warren:

Original article [Thu 12th Sep, 2024]:
Microsoft has today announced it's reintroduced friend requests on Xbox. From here on out you'll be able to "send, accept, or delete friend requests" while also "following or being followed" by other players.
This is currently in testing with the Xbox Insider program, and Microsoft says it looks forward to sharing more about this returning feature (including a full rollout) later this year.
It's further mentioned in a follow up post on social media how existing mutual friends will "update automatically with this change" when it does eventually go live. You'll also remain friends with players who "added you as a friend previously" and "continue following anyone who hadn't".
Right, with all that detailed, here's an early look courtesy of Xbox:
Earlier this week, Xbox also made its new 'Standard' Game Pass tier available to everyone. You can see the full list of games included with this subscription in our guide here on Pure Xbox:
Are you glad to hear this feature is being reintroduced? Let us know in the comments.

This went away??
So, if I played with someone that I don't know in a multiplayer game, am I not able to send them a friend request at the moment? When did that change...? Some of my closest friends have been made this way, indeed, I'm Godfather to the son of someone that I met in this manner.
Or am I completely misunderstanding what's occurring here...?
@Scummbuddy Yes. Was replaced by a follower system ages ago.
This is a good thing!
@Fiendish-Beaver you don't send friend request you simply follow them but they may not choose to follow you back, ridiculous system that should never have been implemented which has led to bot accounts and just general validation grifters spam follow/unfollow on random people hoping those people will follow them back so they can appear special with 0 friends and 10k followers or something.
I don’t understand why they bothered with this followers thing. Leave that garbage for social media. The old friend request system was fine as it was.
@Deityjester I have noticed that not so long ago and most of those accounts have a random good looking female or a not well known model/celebrity for their profile picture whilst also having fancy fonts and emojis in their profile description/bio but when you look at their recent gaming activities via achievements and what not plenty of them just play FIFA, COD, GTA V, Fornite, and others like Gears of War and Minecraft which wouldn't be something all fellow female players play, it is very predatory if you ask me.
The new system does seem to be a bit of a waste. This would be a welcome change.
I’ve noticed quite a drop in my friends list since this update, some who have been on my list for almost a decade. What an inconvenience and pointless update for me.
