Remember Contraband, the open world co-op game announced by Xbox Game Studios back in 2021? Well, we've seen or heard very little on the Avalanche Studios game since then - and Xbox fans are starting to wonder what the heck is going on with it.
Over on the platform's Reddit page, one user simply asks "what happened to this game?", prompting responses from fellow Xbox fans who are pretty much thinking the same thing. There's lots of speculation in here, alongside reminders about some reported info that's come out over the years on this mysterious Xbox title.
On that last Reddit comment there - we really hope this one isn't stuck in development hell, even if we heard rumours it was internally delayed recently. The concept for Contraband sounded really cool at the time of its announcement - this is how Avalanche described the game back then:
"Contraband is a co-op smuggler’s paradise set in the fictional world of 1970s Bayan, and our most ambitious and spectacular game to date. We’re taking everything that we’ve learned from 18 years of being at the forefront of creating beautiful, vast open game worlds filled with stunning vistas and incredible emergent gameplay moments."
These guys developed the Just Cause series of course, and we're still keen to see how this one develops - if Avalanche and Xbox can properly bring it to life. Here's hoping these Xbox fans are soon satiated, and that we see Contraband in action again in the near future.

What happened to the last night is my question
These guys made Mad Max so I'm paying attention. The premise sounds interesting and their track record is good for visually nice and fun games.
The sad thing is that you could write this same article about like 5 other games lol
I have completely forgotten this ever existed. Which is weird, because I liked the idea of it.
Maybe it will be a shadow drop sometime in the future.. (one can dream)
It's bound to be in next year's Dev_Direct. Until then, no game no hype.
@armondo36 I know 😭
Xbox announcing a game alongside a CG trailer and then not telling anyone anything for years?! This is unprecedented!!! Everwild, Perfect Dark, State of Decay 3 and Fable all came out so quickly after they were announced, after all.
The origins behind stories like this always amuse me. Xbox fans are wondering what happened to it because some random on Reddit went "hey, anyone remember this?", and everyone else was like "oh yeah, what DID happen to that?"
I’m just glad it was announced. I will take waiting five years for something that looks cool over announcing games two months in advance of release like the industry is trending. Let me look forward to games, darn it!
I didint realize fable was 2025 i thought they were way behind that @kezelpaso is this confirmed?
@Seioni Over ambitious is what happened. Same with Little Devil Inside.
What happened to OD?
Same as many games announced WAY too early. Many games fail after getting into early production, or get into development hell. Just wait to announce.
@VisitingComet1 Yes. Fable was confirmed for 2025 by Xbox and playground games earlier this year. Of course plans can change and delays happen!
@Ken_Kaniff
LoL Woooow I haven't thought about little devil inside in such a long time!
@Stoned_Patrol Yea I've had my eye on that since it was announced in 2015, but its been pretty clear for awhile that developer is in wayyyy over there heads. At this point either cancel the game or release it in the state it's in.
@themightyant well that's great news. I'm really hoping it's the reboot fable deserves. fable is by far my fav first party game.
There's a lot of games that were announced in that period that are just now creeping back up... state of decay 3, Everwild, Fable went dark for a couple years, perfect dark.
'Co-op'
And there my interest withered on the vine.
This happens all the time, I'd love to know what's going on with REPO MAN and wyrdsong personally
