Metaphor: ReFantazio has been out for a week now on Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, and we can confidently say it's one of our top games of 2024. It's so good that we even gave it an "Outstanding" 10/10 review here at Pure Xbox!
Xbox boss Phil Spencer has clearly been loving his time with the game as well, as he took to the social media platform Threads to highlight how much of a great game he thinks it is. You can see Phil's post about it down below:
No surprises here, then, as the game already boasts a ridiculous Metacritic average of 92 for Xbox (and 94 for PS5!). However, we haven't had a chance to poll the Pure Xbox community on it yet, so we're keen to hear your thoughts so far.
Obviously this is a massive game that could take you around 80 hours to complete, so we're not expecting a final score or anything at this stage - instead, we just want to know your first impressions of the title if you've bought it already. Don't forget you can play the first few hours for FREE with the Prologue demo on Xbox as well!

It doesn't look like something I would enjoy but I will give it a chance if I ever find it in the $20-$30 range. It's not really on my radar at full price.
just beat the first dungeon after about 11.5 hours. Def enjoying the game this far, but keep stressing that I’m not using/building out the right archetypes 🫠🤣
I will be getting Metaphor at some point, but I have so many games in my backlog right now, and now is not the right time to buy the game because more than likely it would be added to my library, and then never get played. I'm trying to be more responsible in my purchases this year. I've been keeping a record of what I buy, how much I have paid for them, and also what games I have finished. Even though I am trying to be more careful, I have still spent over a £1000 on games this year (though that does include a couple of Collector's Editions) and have only played about a third of them. So, I am doing my best to be sensible...by my standards...! 🤪
I have really enjoyed all Atlus games I have played so far. Even the biggest ones, they were all worth my time and I didn't want them to end. The only one I didn't enjoy as much was Persona 5 Tactica, but at least the gameplay is decent after a while, when you get used to it. It is also the only game in that genre (turn-based tactics) that I have played, because I never beat Mario+Rabbids and I haven't played Xcom, which people said was the inspiration of Mario+Rabbids and Persona 5 Tactica.
Phil is becoming a Joe Biden and its supporters won’t be honest and say he needs to step down or step aside
I didn’t particularly enjoy the demo, much like Atlus’s other games, sadly. I may watch the cutscenes on YouTube though. I like the art style and storytelling, so that’s where I’m at
Loving this game. Got it for PS5 and I’m about 17 hours in. It’s completely my thing, and I’m here for this weird fantasy world they’ve crafted.
That said, Spencer BETTER be loving this game, since it looks like MS paid Atlus a good chunk of change to pretend that the PS4/5 versions didn’t exist in almost every piece of promotion they did for the game.
@DJKingaling The game will outright tell you if there’s any you truly need/avoid for a particular dungeon, so you’re safe for the most part!
Maybe you guys wanna know...there is a brazillian site called windowsclub stealing your texts and posting as if it were written by them.
Metaphor is GOTY material, no doubt about it.
A bittersweet experience so far. I’m enjoying almost everything about the core gameplay, but the menu/UI design is atrocious. Just a splatter of crap thrown on the screen at haphazard angles, without rhyme or reason. I’d give anything for a ‘clean menus’ option. Neat, ordered, clearly legible text, that’s all I want.
Great game and 100% GOTY material.
My only fear with this game is that it feels even longer than P5R that too 7 months to get through, and the unavoidable SMT difficulty spikes if you build your characters wrong. But loving it all the same!
@PureXbox just tagging to bring @Zebs0666 comment #8 to the fore. Sounds like a serious copyright thing you guys may have to look at.
@BacklogBrad There's a free demo that's basically the entire first chapter if you're curious. I spent like 17 hours on the demo. Dome people do it in 10. But it's a chunky demo for sure.
@Zebs0666 haha I've just saw this ....lazy Journalism at it's finest
Hey me too! As a new IP I'm seeing a lot of polish and lessons learned from their other games. I'm glad it's doing well for Atlus.
Cool. Very Based.
I don't have a freaking clue what is happening...and I'm still interested. Working thru the demo but looks like I'm gonna plunk a few quarters down for this one.
Holding out for a Switch 2 release. I need to play JRPGs on handhelds.
@NEStalgia You can only really build the protagonist, and unless you do something weird like pump all his optional points into luck or something, you'll still be fine.
As for game length, howlongtobeat.com clocks it at 90 Hours to do absolutely everything, and around 70 hours for a normal playthrough. Still long, but even base P5 took nearly 100 hours just for basic story mode completion, let alone all the extra stuff in Royal.
I thought Phil only played games that go pew pew. Glad to see this game getting recognition, and I hope it’s doing well on Xbox too. Microsoft and Atlus have both been putting a lot of work into that relationship.
@NEStalgia it’s shorter than p5r! Not that that means much. Like someone else said base p5 took me 100+ hours 💀
It does sound decent, but I’m rather put off by my experience with Persona 5, which turned from being great into a seemingly endless slog that I gave up on!
@jesse_dylan @Ralizah 15 of those hours was just steamrolling mooks with the cat mobile in mementos though
It's SMT. You just plunk all the points in MA. Duh, everybody knows that!
I plan to grab it very soon, but right now, I've just started a new game on... Lost Odyssey !
And man. Still a masterpiece.
@NEStalgia 😝 if there’s a mementos in metaphor I’m skipping it!
@Bobobiwan it’s crazy they don’t remaster that
@NEStalgia I mean, the traditional way in Nocturne was going all in on Physical and turning Demi-Fiend into One Punch Man.
Instead of playing good games phil how about getting the studios make them
@Ralizah lol. Ok ok, you can go all ST and going One Punch or MA glass cannon . Technically the stats are so broken it's amazing they still keep them . Also sucks you can't use both MA and ST archetypes on any character realistically in metaphor since ST or MA aspected characters need to stay in their lane.
I always go the MA route but I'm starting to wonder if it would have been better to try phys. Too late now!
@jesse_dylan There was a rumor of a lost Odyssey or blue dragon remake. It was supposedly going to be at the summer showcase but wasn't, but Phil also said that's not all the games. It's very possible one of those remakes is happening.
@NEStalgia won’t hold my breath but it seems like a no brainer. Sakaguchi has said over and over he’s not interested. But he wouldn’t even have to take part. Surely a competent team could be created or delegated. Not sure how blue dragon has aged but lost odyssey wouldn’t need a whole lot
My goty for this year was Persona 3 Reload but now Altus managed to release a second masterpiece in the same year! Haven't decided yet which one I love more but both must be goty contenders this year!
I just ordered disc for PS5. Waiting for another one Atlus masterpiece.
@jesse_dylan Yep, but the game is still very pretty, even without 4k enhancements.
I encourage every RPG lover to at least try it !
@Bobobiwan yep. It’s fine as is and runs great on series with zero fuss. It’s really the last true final fantasy, despite the different name and lack of firaga. Just would be nice to get some minimal bells and whistles and a re release.
