2023 was a corker of a year on Xbox. We had some amazing releases that led to a record-breaking year for video games on Metacritic - at least for the last 20 years anyway. Having said that, 2024 is looking pretty bloody good as well, and the aggregate platform has the numbers to prove it.
Last year's top 10 contained some fantastic games, including Baldur's Gate 3 which managed an incredible 99 Metacritic score on Xbox. Overall, the site's top 10 Xbox releases achieved an average score of 91 in 2023 - and the top 10 average for 2024 currently sits at 90.
Here's how the 2024 top 10 is looking right now:
- Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree (95)
- Metaphor: ReFantazio (92)
- Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth (92)
- Shin Megami Tensei V (92)
- Tekken 8 (89)
- Destiny 2: The Final Shape (89)
- Neon White (88)
- Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown (87)
- Unicorn Overlord (87)
- Botany Manor (87)
And here was the final top 10 list for 2023:
- Baldur's Gate 3 (99)
- The Witcher 3 - Complete Edition (94) - digital launched in late 2022, physical early 2023
- Diablo 4 (91)
- Resident Evil 4 Remake (91)
- Alan Wake 2 (90)
- Street Fighter 6 (90)
- Dead Space (89)
- Cocoon (89)
- Persona 4 Golden (89)
- Sea of Stars (89)
Of course, it goes without saying that the 2024 list isn't finished yet, with Xbox titles like Stalker 2, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle and Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 still to come out. This year could even end up beating 2023 if those titles score highly!
That would certainly surprise us, with 2023 feeling like a real high point of the generation so far - but, let's see how things are shaping up in a couple of months here. Regardless of whether that 2024 number moves up, it's been another great year for game releases on Xbox.

Elden ring is the Goat of this gen simply an amazing game!🐐🎉👏🧎
@Ricky-Spanish I just can't get into souls-like games. 100% Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth for me.
I didn't realise Botany Manor reviewed so well (87) I really enjoyed that game.
@FarmDog08 They are not to everyones taste alright but I love them all that from software do they relax me as hard as that seems haha
@FarmDog08
I enjoy soulslikes but not FromSoft ones.
Still agree with Infinite Wealth.
Balatro’s a 95 on Metacritic for the Xbox version. Very few reviews that are Xbox specific though. In my opinion, that’s the best game on Xbox this year, for sure.
For some reason Erdtree really didn’t hit me like I wanted it to. Elden Ring was my GotY 2022, but Erdtree was just more Elden Ring to me. It didn’t knock my socks off… which is funny because my socks were knocked as I went back to the base game to clear off some side quests I didn’t previously do.
Prince of Persia is my favorite game out of this list by a wide margin. Rebirth is very likely my total GotY at this point, even if I’ve still got a few games to play yet to really crown it.
@Ricky-Spanish It is my favorite game of all time. It is simply amazing.
@cburg Exactly and the feeling you get when you smash that boss into the ground you been stuck on is basically orgasmic gaming the pvp is great as well but I get why some people don't like the game but in fairness it's sucks to be them haha
I only take the Metacritic userscores seriously, as I don't trust most of the 'official' critics.
@Lrapsody Don't take metacritic as gospel or anyone else on reviews everyone is into different things I don't like mushrooms some people would eat them all day i played many games rated bad and enjoyed the and some meant to be amazing and hated them ha
There hasn't been much for me this year on any of the critics top rated lists for any platform. I dont have a clue what my game of the year will be, maybe prince of persia or astrobot. I hope Indy makes the choice easy for me.
@somnambulance They don't count anything with less than seven reviews as part of their yearly lists unfortunately. Balatro has more reviews for other platforms, but only four for Xbox (one of which is ours!).
@Lrapsody User scores are even more worthless. Too many people give games a 10 or a 0 out of ten.
Unicorn Overlord should be higher. Easily a 10/10 for me personally. REALLY Waiting for that Metaphor to hit this night.
No exclusives what so ever on them lists pretty bad that is to say the least
Total Sega victory!
They outdid themselves this year.
@FraserG Makes sense to me. It’s just sad to me because I genuinely love the game and think it deserves more credit for how genius it is.
@Lrapsody ah yes, Metacritic user scores, where everyone rates a game either a 0/10 or 10/10. Much more trustworthy 👍
Space Marine 2 really ruffled the usual suspects feathers. Incredible how gross game reviewing is.
Unfortunately only one on the list I like. But, to be honest I don't really play any of the big commercial games. Don't find there being a huge variation in genre or gameplay. Prefer my indie games
Sega went nuts this year!
@Markatron84 I meant the user scores as opposed to the critical scores. I usually check through Steam reviews for a more 'reliable' gauge.
