Last week, we brought you the news that Atlus's upcoming JRPG Metaphor: ReFantazio now has a chunky free trial on Xbox, but an early review from outlet Famitsu is also here to give us strong vibes that this could be a bit of a banger.
Shared on social media earlier today, the Japanese site has given Metaphor an overall score of 37/40 using its review scale. Four critics played the game for the review, with three of them giving it a 9 and one giving it a 10.
Of course, this is just one outlet's impressions for now so do bear that in mind, but it hopefully bodes well for SEGA's latest JRPG when it launches. The full title will be out on Xbox in just over a week, so eager fans haven't got long to find out for themselves.
As we alluded to up at the top, you can actually play Metaphor: ReFantazio for about five hours right now via the game's free 'Prologue' demo on Xbox, so that certainly looks worth a go if you'd like to get a sneak peek at what Famitsu is raving about here. Then, it's onto the full release come October 11th, folks.
Does this make you even more excited for the full release? Tell us your thoughts down below.

Looking forward to checking out Metaphor, but my main interest is Silent Hill 2 Remake. I've long felt it would be good, despite the over-the-top hate. Of course, constructive criticism is important and it probably made this game better.
This is great news really looking forward to this ,also I'm shocked slent hill 2 got 35/40 what a twist 😁 I'm more interested in it now.
Really hoping Bloober Team pulls off a miracle with Silent Hill 2, and it looks like they just might! Despite general apathy surrounding it, I enjoyed The Medium very much.
I am very interested in Metaphor. I haven't played any of the Persona games, but I figure this might be a good place to jump in. The fantasy setting resonates with me and I like the art style.
Loving the demo so far!
I never buy games at full price, and I already have a massive pile of unfinished Atlus games (P3R, P5S, SMTV, SH2) and yet I'm tempted to buy Metaphor right away. IDK why but I was instantly hooked completely, and find it much more satisfying than SMTV which still doesn't click for me like SMTIV did. Only fear is I spent 17 hours on the prolog DEMO...this thing might be more huge than P5R which too me 7 months to work through!
It's like the perfect blend of the best parts of SMT, Persona, classic FF (Jobs system), and even a hint of Etrian Odyssey. Like a love letter to Atlus fans who also love FF.
No doubt is is fantasic from elsewhere I've seen things.
But IMO, any credibility Famitsu had went out the window when they gave FFXIII a 39/40 and FFXII-2 a 40/40.
I played through the demo fully. Im still unsure about it. I like the mad graphics and the characters are fun enough but the pacing is terrible and some of the writing is pure cringe. Being a pure hearted hero allows you to awaken a perso… sorry I mean Archetype, so boring. I do like some of the story elements like the ‘humans’ but I came away very mixed.
@SodaPop6548 seems a lot faster paced from the demo , but it's just a taster
I've read that the translation is pretty bad. As in, it makes sense, but they're changing the lines to whatever they want instead of being somewhat faithful.
I'm not sure I like that, and the characters design is some of the worst Atlus has done so far (imo), so I'm thinking I'll wait for a big sale.
@NEStalgia Man, I am in the same boat...last Atlus game I have beat is P5S. Yesterday I started P5R as I finally bought on Xbox (which is on the Play Anywhere program, so I can play it on my Ally too).
But I have SH2, SMTIV waiting on the backlog.
FWIW, I loved SMTV gameplay wise (even though the story was very 'meh' - played it on Switch, but must likely I will sell it to buy the Vengeance version on Xbox) so I'm curious about how it did not gel with you.
Been playing the demo and while I like it, it is VERY slow to get going. Probably get it but maybe not right away.
@HarmanSmith Yep, that's the life of an Atlus fan lol.
I originally bought SMTV on Switch and a mix of the gameplay not gelling, and the 15-20fps slideshow performance, I just could NOT play it. Never even got to Tokyo tower. Picked it up every few months to give it another go, and it just didn't work.
I actually JUST rebought it recently for the Vengeance version but got derailed giving it a serious go by the Metaphor demo dropping. At proper fps it's a MUCH better game than it was on Switch already, but I still find "something" about the gameplay not clicking. I didn't realize what at first but I think the problem is having too few ways to regain MP. Persona games are kind of balanced so you have to be frugal and use your MP well. Metaphor has the ability to use Mage to grind some MP. SMTV has the little crystals you too rarely find, and the restore for macca at the founts, but at least in the early game, MP is too low, macca to scarce, and in a battle system that seems to have more trial and error MP use as you get going with weak demons, it feels like a frustrating slog. I'm sure it improves after a while, and that's the early game woes, but it's amazingly frustrating.
I also think the ambient soundscape soundtrack irritates me at least in that area which drags me out of the experience lol. I played a while last night then switched to P3R again lol.
@NEStalgia Well, I'll get Vengeance when it gets a discount (and it will be a great chance to use my hard erned rewards points, lol).
And I will check Fantazio too - but man, a 17 hours prolog? I'll bet the full game it will be massive.
@HarmanSmith Yeah, I just caved and bought Vengeance on Steam. It wasn't the best sale ever, but it's Atlus and considering it matches the lowest price I've seen for P3R, I think it'll be a while before it was a better sale. I kicked in the extra $7 to get deluxe with all the DLC, even though I have a hard time getting into the game, because, I'm an Atlus sucker.
Yeah, I heard some reviews say the prologue was a 5 hour demo, but there's just no way. If you're grinding back MP with mage, and especially if you do the optional dungeon (I did the dungeon but had to run past some monsters because I was out of MP and no way to refuel in there, and left the dungeon after realizing I was getting 1-shot by the boss. In the full game I think that dungeon is meant to be tackled AFTER the story dungeon, but in the demo the demo ends when you beat the miniboss in the story dungeon so you can try it first. Story dungeon has a 10-day deadline, that side dungeon has no deadline at all so you can do it late-game if you want.
Yeah, I'm convinced Refantazio is as long as or longer than P5R and that already set records for how long it is.
i keep forgetting it's october and that the game is coming out pretty soon
Preordered months ago. Can’t wait for this game. This and AC shadows were the two games I was looking forward to this fall/winter. I know Metaphor gonna take forever , but I’m ready. It’s become a yearly tradition since P5R dropped for me to close out the year with an Atlus game (P5R in 2022, and P3P in 2023 (which is main reason I haven’t played Reload yet)).
@InterceptorAlpha
Come on now, be fair. It happened way before that.
I never played a Persona game but have been looking forward to Metaphor Famtazio since the first trailer. Finished the demo, this game is awesome (even coming from someone who really doesn't like anime), instantly preordered. Another GOTY contender.
Demo has screamingly bad writing.
The fact that silent hill 2 scored so high has me a little worried tho; I was expecting that to be trash 😆
Got metaphor preordered and am racing to finish up smt v before it comes out!
@YourNameHere glad someone else is pointing this out.
Looking forward to Metaphor: ReFantazio
