It's really crept up on us, but Sonic X Shadow Generations officially arrives on Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S this Friday! As a result, we've got some early reviews to share with you, and they're looking pretty good so far.
FYI, we had been planning for ages to review this one, and it's still something we intend to do, but for whatever reason we haven't been able to acquire code from SEGA yet. You'll see our review here at Pure Xbox eventually, but it's most likely going to be post-launch - so we'll have to make-do with this roundup for now.
Let's go for it then, shall we? Here's what some reviews are saying about the new Sonic game so far:
IGN (9/10)
"Sonic X Shadow Generations takes an already excellent game and spring jumps it to new heights at a blistering pace by doubling up the campaign length with creative level design, fantastic bosses, plenty of collectibles, and an appreciable graphical upgrade."
CGM (8.5/10)
"As far as remasters go, with two full campaigns, a laundry list of unlockables, distinct gameplay styles and fan service galore, it’s hard not to recommend Sonic X Shadow Generations to fans of the franchise."
Push Square (8/10)
"Sonic X Shadow Generations is a great two-for-one deal, but for us, the antihero's half of the package steals the show. While the remaster of the 13-year-old platformer is perfectly fine, Shadow's brand new campaign outshines it with much improved gameplay and level design."
Press Start (7/10)
"On its own merits, Sonic Generations does its best to bring the best of both Classic Sonic and Modern Sonic together in a fun and creative adventure that’s sure to please Sonic fans all around. However, it tries too hard to fit itself into the same mould while attempting to keep true to the 3D Shadow experience, ultimately falling short of the lofty heights it aims for."
GameSpot (6/10)
"Sonic X Shadow Generations is a weird package. On one hand, Sonic Generations is a remaster of a great game from 2011 that now feels like it's a little outdated. And on the other, Shadow Generations is the conclusion to a storyline that the franchise hasn't really cared about since 2006."
As things stand, Sonic X Shadow Generations is sitting on a very respectable 80 average for PS5 on Metacritic, but as mentioned there are no Xbox reviews as far as we know. We'll give you our Pure Xbox verdict as soon as we can.
If you're interested in checking it out, the price starts at £44.99 / $49.99 on the Xbox Store, and don't forget the Xbox 360 version of Sonic Generations is backwards compatible - although it can't be bought standalone digitally anymore.

A bit of variation in score here! I'd like to play it though and I'm hoping it will be as good as some are saying!
The Xbox 360 version in 4K60fps on Series X is amazing, so I would recommend (and get) this expanded new version as well. This game is the best Sonic in 3D. Frontiers is close and is extremely well done, but it needs more Sonic flavour. I hope that they make a sequel.

The metacritic score is an 80, which is basically the highest a sonic game is allowed to score. So that's good.
That 9/10 is rare for a Sonic game 😂
@Bigmanfan Right, it equals a 100 Sony or Nintendo game 😂.

The original game is highly overrated so adding shadow won't make much of a difference
@Utena-mobile I didn't know either but I just watched it here. It has been ridiculously censored, so I won't get the updated version.

The question is....is it word buy at full price if you already played the original release?
That's the question....
@Banjo- We've now reached 4Kids Tier censorship in a Sonic game... should just call the game Sonic X as both a tribute and warning to buyers.
Never played this sonic game I might give it a crack it gives me a break from my sports and shooter games 😁😁
I’m pleasantly surprised by how well this has been reviewed. It’s on my wishlist and I’ll get this on a sale at some point, but I have far too much already on the backlog to justify a launch day purchase.
