The gaming world went a bit bananas for Helldivers 2 earlier this year - its PS5 and PC launch was massive and the game went on to be more popular than any of us ever imagined. Even way back when, there was talk about an Xbox version (with Phil Spencer even commenting on the situation), and now such a possibility is still getting headlines.
Today, outlet VideoGamer has pulled some fresh quotes from Arrowhead community manager 'Twinbeard' - which originally came from Discord. One fan asked if it was 'impossible' that the game could one day come to Xbox, and the dev dropped some interesting insight in response.
Here's how Twinbeard responded:
"Who says it [Helldivers 2] couldn’t [come to Xbox]? It’s not up to us but to Sony and Phil to duke out, but hypothetically speaking, if both partners think it would benefit them from a financial/brand standpoint, it could. If Sony believes it won’t though, it won’t."
It's an intriguing take, but one that ultimately puts the ball in Sony's court. At this stage, we've seen the PlayStation owner branch out to PC (and Switch with the upcoming Lego Horizon Adventures), but Xbox seems to be a step too far for them right now. MLB The Show is kind of an exception, but Sony doesn't actually publish that game on Xbox.
Obviously, with Microsoft, some of its games have started to move over to PS5 quite a while after their initial Xbox launch, so we could always see something similar happen with select PS5 titles. Sony is still largely using a delayed approach even on PC though, so we wouldn't expect PS games on Xbox anytime soon. Never say never, though!

Never gona happen
I think it’s probably too late in the day now.
But I think they should have released it on Xbox. Just as I think there should have been an Xbox release for concord (yes yes it flopped) but I think multiplayer games generally need to be on as many consoles as possible
So essentially what we all assumed then? I do hope that Helldivers 2 makes its way to Xbox someday; hopefully sooner rather than later. It really is a fun game.
Helldivers 2 fits the Xbox environment really well as a Sony IP, just as Hellblade and Indiana Jones do on PlayStation as Microsoft IPs. I think it would be great if Xbox console players could enjoy the game alongside PC and PS5 players, the game is a blast.
But therein lies the issue… PS5 and (especially) PC holds sway with the players that show interest in the game, and Xbox hardware users just don’t seem to move the needle enough for Sony to consider expanding this IP’s reach. I hope I’m wrong… we live in wild times within this industry, and I would love for more players from other environments (that includes Nintendo too) to join in what I think is a banger multiplayer.
I understand I’m saying nothing new or insightful, but what else is there to say at this point? I think Helldivers 2 just makes sense on Xbox, and I’m hoping against the grain that Sony might at the very least consider what the next Helldivers project could do on Xbox at launch. Regardless, the wait would be a while for series x players given how much Arrowhead have on their plate… but as I’ve mentioned, this industry is deep in the chaos of change. I absolutely see this as a possibility.
Yeah, it won't happen. Shame too, Sony just leaving money on the table honestly.
@Bigmanfan more like leaving money on the table and setting fire to said table.
Isn't it the hype dead anyway? Never hear much about it these days. Looks like a great game so would be cool to get a cross platform release but I wouldn't hold my breath honestly, there's probably nowhere near enough money in it to attract Sony into shifting their stance on multi platform games.
@Markatron84 lol you're not wrong
Spoiler. It won’t happen.
"It’s not up to us but to Sony and Phil to duke out...."
Something tells me Phil wouldn't be the problem in that scenario.
I love how stupid Microsoft can be, how stupid Sony can be, that these companies do not understand that we just love games period and that putting it on more platforms means more sales. But, whatever, c-suite executives are going to do what they want to do and damn the rest of us, its all about investors, not the consumers.
The game already lost most of its pc players (there wasnt many on ps anyway) and they didn't port it yet so it never gona happened or maybe it will when the game will already be dead so who cares?
I remember a time where Sonic on Nintendo was impossible. Crash outside PS was impossible. Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest were Nintendo only. Things can change. Just don't hold your breath.
I wouldn't bet on it. Sony truly hates Xbox, so unless Xbox struck some kind of insane deal where Sony exclusively benefitted from the port, I don't think they'd do it. They've already caved to porting to Nintendo, even if it's just one game, but still.
I think just as much as Xbox wants to die on the hill of "exclusives hurt everyone", Sony wants to die on the hill of "screw Xbox"
Edit: Yes I'm aware MLB The Show is a Sony game on Xbox, but correct me if I'm wrong, isn't that due to the rights negotiations demanding The Show be multiplat or they'd walk? Basically an instance where Sony had the choice to make more money or none at all.
Give it time. They will realize there are plenty of their 1st party games that should be launching day 1 on every platform available to them. Especially if they continue to pursue these live service/audience dependent titles.
My money is on the sony execs realizing there is more money being left on the table and dictating to playstation execs that they need to do this.
Marathon will be the 1st game in my estimation. Since Bungie has failed to meet the requirements to remain "independent," it is now entirely Sony's call if the xbox version is released or axed.
I'm amazed that this sort of speculation is still a thing, It's a complete non-starter.
It's an intriguing take, but one that ultimately puts the ball in Sony's court
Indeed, and Sony is more likely to blast the ball all the way to Neptune before even considering to share it 😅...
@Elbow that is indeed the case with MLB.
The sad thing is, as much as I'd like Xbox players to be able to play Helldivers 2, the naysayers are right. It's not likely to happen. Sony are "winning", so there's no real reason for them to share the wealth.
Exclusive IP drives console sales. If everything was available everywhere, what makes one console necessary over another?
If Sony makes third party deals that keep games exclusive to Playstation why the hell do you think they'll put games they actually own on xbox? Lol just stop it's not happening.
lol it won’t happen and Helldivers doesn’t need Xbox. Already at 12 million copies sold and the 2nd best selling game of the year in the US. Why would Sony bring it too Xbox when it already most likely broke even.
@BacklogBrad except that Sony isn’t desperate to make more money from Helldivers considering it’s already insanely profitable on just PC and PS5…
@Elbow yes you are right
@Fishmasterflex96 Businesses don't usually say "this is enough money for us, we don't want anymore." They will want growth.
Isn't it a little strange that they are putting a Horizon game on switch day 1 and shortening the pc delay at the same time that multiple 3rd parties are saying making ps5 exclusives is bad for their business?
@Markatron84 Thank you, I was certain that was the case but was feeling less confident about it after I edited my post lol
Don't see this happening anytime soon Sony are still looking for timed exclusives and have a much bigger player base unfortunately 🤷
@acmiguens There hasn’t been any single IP from Sony that has made its way to Xbox, none at all, in fact it’s more feasible that it arrives on a Nintendo platform than Xbox, just see Lego Horizon.
Sony's entire strategy from day 1 has been to hurt the competition as much as possible, it will never happen.
@ButterySmooth30FPS personal preference ?
@Markatron84 There was no reason to assume to begin. The legal paperwork shows Sony owns Helldivers and has for years.
If Sony was going to release any of their games on Xbox, you'd better believe it's gonna be something old that doesn't move consoles and isn't gonna cost much to port. Even then, PC and Switch are infinitely more likely to get them than Xbox.
With helldivers player base dropping you think they would. Sea of thieves did well and would be nice to have one back our way
Port begging is a bad look, especially when it will never happen.
No port begging for me
time up - let it go -
@IOI And that was true for every single thing I said. Until it wasn't.
And it's not as if Sony developed games aren't on Xbox. Sure, the MLB forced their hand, but getting a Sony developed game day one on Game Pass is fun to see.
Please, feel free to keep your scepticism. You'll be right, until you aren't. Makes no difference to me. I'm playing the really long game
