The team behind 2023 zombie romp Dead Island 2 has unveiled a bunch of new content for the title, and some of the biggest additions are available for standard edition players on Xbox Game Pass.
Basically, we're getting a major update that brings new content to the base game, while 'Gold Edition' owners are also being upgraded to a brand-new 'Ultimate Edition' with fresh content. The two big additions for base game players are New Game Plus and Horde Mode.
Dead Island 2's New Game Plus option adds "new zombie breeds, a boosted level cap & extra skill slots", while Horde Mode is a "brutal" way to play Dead Island 2 - you can "defend your frat house in the Venice canals", either solo or co-op.
As mentioned, those two major additions are free for all players, including those playing Dead Island 2 through Xbox Game Pass. If you happen to have the Gold Edition of the title (or are planning on picking it up), you'll now have a new Ultimate Edition to play with. Here, the game's existing story DLCs are being bundled with new character and weapon packs for the bumper Dead Island 2 experience.
Anyway, all of these goodies are out now for Dead Island 2 - and if you don't have Xbox Game Pass right now, the team has just added a brand-new free trial for anyone to try the game out!
Still playing this one, Game Pass fans? Tell us if you're trying out the update down in the comments.

I still think Dying Light 2 has more bang for your buck but this update sounds like its adding a lot of good things, maybe on a deep sale I'll pick this up.
Oh snap, I read too fast, this is on GAME PASS. Awesome. I might just give this a download.
I really enjoyed Dead Islands 2. I thought the developers did a really good job with it, particularly considering the troubled development history. I do wonder how much of the original version is still in there, and how much of it was completely redone from scratch by Dambuster Studios. I thought the game to be very polished, and pretty much exactly what you would want as a sequel.
I'm really looking forward to diving back into this once more, and I particularly enjoy horde mode, so hopefully this is built for me... 😉
@Fiendish-Beaver I enjoyed my time in this game.
When it seems like every other game is a souls like that wants you to enjoy being repeatedly kicked in the plums I found the simple combat offered here quite refreshing.
Never once got frustrated & I never got tired of dismembering the hoards of zombies. Will probably give it a NG+ run at some point.
I was pretty underwhelmed by this game to be honest, flesh damage system was just a gimmick that I stopped noticing or caring about after a few hours and the way zombies just keep respawning sort of ruined the feel of making your way through areas for me. That and it's sort of a fake open world, you basically just have different areas that you need to progress through in a rather linear fashion.
