You might find a nice little freebie in your Xbox library today! That'll be the case if you own Darksiders 2: Deathinitive Edition for Xbox One anyway, as the free Xbox Series X|S upgrade is launching at some point in the next few hours.
Ahead of the launch, we've seen a few select outlets sharing their reviews of this upgrade - although specifically for the PS5 version. Nevertheless, it should be a pretty similar looking (and performing) game on Xbox Series X at least.
So, here's what some of the critics are saying about Darksiders 2's new remaster:
God Is A Geek (4.5/5)
"The visuals have been enhanced substantially, and while it still looks like an older game, the lighting is fantastic, with the environments feeling more alive than ever before. It looks so good in 4K, and it reminds you how ahead of its time it was when it originally released."
CGM (8.5/10)
"Darksiders II: Deathinitive Edition celebrates the original’s strengths while polishing its presentation. Whether you’re revisiting the journey of Death or experiencing it for the first time, this edition is worth diving into for its blend of action, exploration, and compelling storytelling."
COGconnected (82/100)
"Thanks to its timeless, stylized graphic novel art direction, Darksiders II doesn’t look dated, though there are some pretty chunky models here and there, even in 4K and with ray tracing tossed in. The game looks incredibly sharp, crisp, and vibrant. Even with the PS5’s power, however, there was some pop-in in the larger areas."
Noisy Pixel (7/10)
"Regarding this boosted port, it doesn’t warrant a replay for the average player by any means, but if you’re a veteran or new fan, there’s enough justification for giving this release a whirl."
If you're eligible to receive this free upgrade for Darksiders 2, it'll be made available via Xbox Smart Delivery - which means the update should start automatically if you've already got the game installed on your console. If you haven't got it installed, when you go to download it on the Microsoft Store, you'll automatically get the right version.
As far as we know, it's somewhere around 9am ET / 2pm BST that it goes live, but there could be delays of course!

Bought the fury collection for a few box a few weeks ago, the first one was awesome to play and 100% on 60 fps, took me a week, didn't know I was sleeping on a possible goty remaster with ds, can't wait to play!
I've heard rumors it's running at 60fps, but do we have any confirmation? I am actually excited for it.
@SodaPop6548 Several YouTube videos seem to be confirming 60fps and it looked super smooth in the little I watched. I tried to find a bit where a lot was going on and it was still smooth.
Does this have it's own achievements, @FraserG, or does it revert to those you earned in the original version? Thanks...
@Fiendish-Beaver I believe it reverts to the original as it's a Smart Delivery game (and therefore considered one version rather then two).
Could be wrong though!
Well that sucks! 😂 Thank you, @FraserG...
It would be unforgivable if this game wouldn't run in 4K@60fps@120hz on Series X and PS5.
Especially after being re-released for the 3rd time....or how many more attempts would the developers need to accomplish what shout be standard by now.
I've been playing it a bit tonight. The improvements to lighting and shadows look really good. I wish this game had a photo mode as at times the art is very high quality. It's running a smooth 4k 60 for me on series x.
This game was already remastered back in 2015 so what's so different.
Nice. I've never played this series, except for the spinoff RPG Genesis, so bought the Fury Collection in anticipation of this free 'remaster'.
I loved Darksiders but fell off the series with 2 because it felt like a complete waste of time. After the epic first game's ending. the second game just spins its wheels telling the same exact story from another character perspective. They thought we all waited years to not advance the story at all? No idea who greenlit the story for this game, but they didnt think it through.
