There's been some concern in the Call of Duty community over the past 24 hours about a screenshot that's been doing the rounds showing a paid service for audio in Black Ops 6, but fortunately it's not as concerning as first feared.
Basically, there's something called 'Immerse Spatial Audio' in Black Ops 6 that's made possible by a company called Embody. This technology "increases the directional accuracy of sounds played in the world", and can be used as part of an 'Enhanced Headphone Mode' in BO6 that's available to all players for free on Xbox Series X|S.
As you can see below though, there's been some confusion that Spatial Audio requires payment in Black Ops 6:
So, just to be clear, the above statement is not correct. The free trial and payment option that's mentioned in the image is for a "Personalized Profile" that will customise the sound "to your unique physiology". Here's how Embody explains it:
FREE - Universal Profile is your entry vector to a deeper level of spatial awareness and accurate 3D sound. Fine-tuned to the unique sound world of Call of Duty, every explosion and footstep are perfectly balanced so you can hear every detail of the battlefield with precision.
PAID - Take your tactical hearing to the next level with a Personalized Profile. With spatial sound customized to your unique physiology, every sound is balanced with precision in the 3D soundworld. Create your Personalized Profile in Enhanced Headphone Mode Configuration and try it free for 30 days. Then click the “Get Immerse Gamepack” button to unlock for 5 years with a one-time payment of $19.99 USD.
The TL;DR here is that you do not need to pay extra money for better audio in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 unless you really want to. Based on what Activision has said about audio so far, it sounds like the free options will be more than enough!
Anyway, we'll all get to find out very soon, as Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 officially arrives at 00:00am on Friday, October 25th in every region. That means we'll start getting impressions from the New Zealand launch in less than 24 hours!

Hi, @FraserG! Does this only work with Black Ops, or is it something that can be used in other games. As someone that is slightly deaf, and has terrible tinnitus (resulting from my Military days, and being too close to explosions whilst serving in Bomb Disposal! 🤪), a tailored audio setting is very, very appealing. I do wear hearing aids, but they don't totally eliminate the tinnitus, or help with me constantly missing what is said on TV! However, if it's only usable with CoD, then it loses that appeal. Thank you...
Sheesh talk about taking the piss with the money grabbing. Cant wait for:
Pay £5 for a better enhanced experience when you press X. Other buttons are available at extra cost.
@Fiendish-Beaver So, in terms of this specific feature that Embody is providing, it's only available in Black Ops 6, Cyberpunk 2077 and Final Fantasy XIV.
It's worth having a look into some of the other audio options you can get on Xbox though (such as Dolby Atmos for Headphones - there's a free Dolby app you can download on the Microsoft Store) that might suit your needs the best 👍
Here's a bit more about the various audio options at your disposal on Xbox:

Thank you, @FraserG. That's really helpful and informative. Very much appreciated... 👍
How complicated and unclear do you wanna make things? Activison: YES.
Yeah it's only de personalized profile that costs extra, but so many are going to be confused about this considering the hud design. Can't wait until it costs extra to make a profile for my graphics settings so the game looks better -.-
My inner cynic is eating like a gourmet chef this gen.
@Fiendish-Beaver I have the Dolby Atmos app. Its great. Recommend MOVIE setting. GAME is too quiet.
I would imagine this kind of service is only truly needed for people who take CoD very seriously, such as competitive players.
@NeutronBomb how does the movie setting affect positioning? I had always thought game modes for audio focused much more on positioning and accuracy than the others?
@RiverGenie did you read it all…….or just the headline……
I'm not saying that personalised sounds profiles aren't a good idea but...come on...this is just pure fleecing. We're already paying for a product, the console and the headset we've bought, now there's an optional sound upgrade micro transaction? The sound is already frigging coded. Next we'll be charged per button press
Thank you, @NeutronBomb. I'll take a look...
@IssaBrvndo i read the entire thing and understand that you can pay for personalised setting good for 5 years after a trial period.
Activision did not put this service & enter into a contract with this 3rd party for the good of the game. Its another revenue stream to exploit in a game franchise already stuffed with them.
I stand by my statement that its taking the piss.
This is interesting. Is this for just Xbox or is this an Xbox and PlayStation thing?
I just don't see the PlayStation crowd paying for this because the system already lets your create a personal spatial audio profile for free.
Honestly, I don't see Xbox people paying for it either if they already paid for Dolby Atmos for Headphones - even though Xbox doesn't let you personalize your spatial audio.
Like @NeutronBomb, I also found that Movie Mode "works" better than Game Mode for Dolby Atmos for Headphones (by working I mean being able to differentiate the direction of the sound) - I use the Detailed EQ setting.
Fake news. This is a 3rd party audio enhancer just like Dolby Atmos and DTS that we've had for years. This is a big nothingburger.
@GamingFan4Lyf It's on PlayStation and PC as well.
I believe the Cyberpunk 2077 and Final Fantasy XIV versions that Embody created were only for PC.
@AccessibleDaydream Sounds same to me just louder. But I'm no audiophile.
@Fiendish-Beaver hey brother thanks for your service. I also have some hearing issues and the dolby atmos movie mode makes it so I dont have to rely on closed captions for everything. I used it with the xbox headphones for a long time and they were great. The razer barracuda pro headphones is what I use now and I can actually hear 95-99% of things as opposed to before.
Why do we have to penny pinch FEATURES now in full price games? Also has a TIME LIMIT for the audio service. What the actual F?
This industry sucks.
@kuu_nousee Yeah I hate how everything needs to be some sort of subscription. "Pay X amount of money for X feature for X amount of time" is so lame.
Removed - unconstructive feedback
Thank you, @VisitingComet1. I think it sounds as if Dolby Atmos is worth giving a go then. I have subtitles on in every game now because I miss so much of what is being said. When I'm watching TV, I drive my son mad because I constantly asking what was said. I dislike having subtitles on when I'm watching TV because often I am so focussed on the subtitles that I miss what is happening in the show... 🤪
@JayJ if buying the game outright was one way or a subscription was another method to have access then that's fine just like GamePass does it, then whatever. But this isn't it, don't wall off features from the FULL paid release. This isn't a skin it's a game feature.
@kuu_nousee They do the same thing with mobile games. Like "pay $4 to play this game without ads for a month." It sucks to see such tactics being used in full console releases.
@NeutronBomb The movie setting is completely inaccurate and unrealistic for games. I just leave it on game for everything and only turn on performance mode when I'm playing first person shooters and sometimes I don't even turn it on for that. I've gotten to where I just leave it on game for everything and sometimes change it to music if I'm listening to music. Experiment back and forth a few times you may or may not see what I'm talking about, but it all comes down to personal preference. If that's what sounds good to you, that's all that matters. I will add, that when I used to use gaming headsets such as Arctis Nova 7X, I did tend to have it on the movie setting a lot and actually preferred it to the game setting. Since I've been using high-end IEM's, my preference has changed, because the IEM's are light years ahead in quality of sound.
@JayJ My Xbox 360 and gaming PC look better and better everyday. If I hadn't invested so much money in digital purchases on Xbox One and Series X, I would just ditch it. I already decided I'm only buying new games on PC unless they are extremely cheap deals on the Xbox Series X. I also will not be buying the new Xbox console.
@ZYDIO lol I am using an Arctic. I don't know which one. It's 1 or 3. The wireless cyberpunk one. I agree it's personal preference. I don't use movie settings for any reason other than it sounds best to me. The GAME setting is so much quieter
@ZYDIO Yeah, I have heavily lost interest in keeping up with the latest in gaming this gen. Most AAA games just feel like cash grabs or fail to catch my interest, the industry just keeps trying to make everything more dependent upon online services and fees, advancements to graphics and technology are no longer impressing me, I could go on. It's just not the scene it was when I was getting into it back in the 90's and 00's. Seems like a lot of the passion is gone and there is just too much BS getting in the way of being able to simply play a video game and enjoy myself. I honestly feel like this is the last console gen I really want to be a part of. Will probably just build a good gaming PC eventually when I am ready to move on from today's consoles. Heck neither Xbox nor Sony have much in the way of truly exclusive games that really grab my interest anymore anyways.
I have already taken my old Xbox One's offline and recently took a Series S with an xScreen offline as well. Loaded them up with my digital library of games so I can just play whatever without having to worry about any online services or nonsense. When they took down the 360 marketplace this year it got me to get back into that console and I found it amazing not only how well the games have aged but how much more fun they can be compared to today's games.
@JayJ I think there is gonna be some kind of crash soon and they will realize what they've been doing wrong, and in a few years I think we'll have another Xbox 360 like era again.
@ZYDIO We can only hope.
This is why Xbox is so great. PATHETIC PlayStation would never have something like this in a PlayStation Studios game. Xbox continues to innovate at be at the BLEEDING EDGE of video game technology!!!!
