Following a relatively small period of exclusivity on PC and PlayStation 5, The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria made its way to Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S a few days ago, and it appears to be selling extremely well so far.
Looking at the "Top Paid" charts as things stand, the game is #6 in the UK chart and #9 in the US chart. The reviews are surprising as well - despite a very average 59 Metacritic score, the game has a 4.7/5 rating based on over 130 reviews on the Xbox Store so far. Here's a couple of examples that we've found while browsing:
VthebomberV on the Xbox Store: "Great game thus far for $20. The Developers actually care about Tolkien, and they spent time to help us see more of his world. The combat is okay but there's crafting and exploration that will take you deeper than expected. Just seeing some of the lore that is within the game is pretty neat. Great job for a lower budget, if it had been higher I think this would have had game of the year potential."
RAPTURE1 on the Xbox Store: "Return to Moria has the great lore of LOTR, fun gameplay, cratfting, and restoration building, combat, co-op or single player. For 20 dollars it is great value these days with good graphics, and huge underground world to explore and restore, and endless gameplay."
As you can see, one of the things that keeps getting brought up is the game's low price - it's launched for just £16.74 / $19.99 on Xbox Series X and S - and that's surely why it's climbing up the charts so rapidly as we speak.
If you're interested, we'll throw more details about the game down below along with some screenshots.
"The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria™ follows the Dwarves as they embark on a new adventure to reclaim their legendary home of Moria beneath the Misty Mountains. Players will join forces to survive, craft, build and explore the iconic, sprawling mines. Courageous expeditioners will need to be vigilant as mysterious dangers await."
"Set in a procedurally generated Dwarven realm of Moria, no two adventures will be alike, and every expedition is traversable either solo or online with companions."

@FraserG I have alot of text on web pages showing as unreadable characters, both in chrome and Edge. Only started like this today.
@johnK Specifically on Hookshot Media websites? (PX/NL/PS/TE)
@FraserG Not sure. Pity there is no way of sending a picture so you can see which text is affected.
This is on my wishlist but I have too many other games to play right now, and the next few months looks stacked too. Maybe by the time there’s a lull in new releases this will be on Gamepass 😃
So Amazon purchased the rights to have low budget crap
It's not a bad game if you are into survival crafting style games.
The lotr IP does carry the game though and the progression is fairly standard but with the lotr dwarf aesthetic .
The campaign is pretty interesting so far and is doing a fairly good job of teaching the mechanics. It does have a sandbox mode too.
I am playing solo but I imagine it (as with most games like this) will shine with a bunch of friends. You can host a game or join other multiplayer games. It has cross play with pc & ps5 too apparently but I am sticking with solo.
For the price if you are into this sort of game you can't really go wrong. If it's not your thing I don't see anything here that's going to change that.
I did try it, but I definitely aligned with the 59 Metacritic score, but I'm not into survival crafting types games and was hoping the LOTR lore and look would pull me through.
It didnt for me, but if you are more into survival/crafting and a LOTR fan, then this might work for you, and you can't argue with the price!
