Earlier today, it was reported that 650 employees were being laid off from Microsoft Gaming, with many of those said to be from Activision Blizzard. Things have been pretty quiet ever since, and it seems there's a good reason for that.
According to The Verge's Tom Warren, Xbox's social media teams were told to "go dark" for the day following the news, with the idea being to avoid an embarrassing "Feel the Burn" situation like last time. This refers to a tagline for a controller that was awkwardly revealed on the same day as four studio closures back in May:
Here's what Warren had to say in his tweet:
Of course, we don't know how long the whole "go dark" thing will apply, but the official Xbox Twitter (or "X") account hasn't tweeted for 21 hours at the time of writing, so it seems Microsoft wants to play it safe for the moment.
We've covered the employee layoffs situation elsewhere on Pure Xbox if you want to read more - basically, it's said to impact "mostly corporate and supporting functions" in order to help organise the business for long-term success.

Tone deaf xbox at it again slow cooking the brand
We unfortunately can’t go a week without hearing about job layoffs at any company…
This is standard procedure for brands during times like these. I’m glad Xbox learned their lesson from last time.
Is it going dark if there’s no one there to run the machinery?
To be fair, they can't win if they DO post and they can't win if they DON'T post... as this article proves.
So what they are turning the lights off? Doesn't it strain your eyes working at a monitor in the dark. Someone should inform the health & safety inspector.
😉
@DoctorJohnDisco Willing to be most that worth are stocks. So it's all just on paper. Phil could wake up any morning and be worth $20 bucks.
@Utena-mobile they could afford to keep them all on as is
First off, where is the source for the 'Go Dark' instruction?
Microsoft are hardly going to admit that is what they have done, and are very unlikely to dignify the rumour with a response. So it is a win/win for the person that says this is the case, because it won't be denied.
Now, if the Xbox account never goes quiet, then fair enough, there's probably something to this, but if the account often falls silent because they have nothing much to say, then it could well be coincidence that they are currently silent.
All that said, ultimately, it's Microsoft; they are damned if they do, damned if they don't. If they say something on any subject, people will jump on them and call them tone deaf. If they say nothing, they just get criticised. So what are they supposed to do...?
I always wonder what positions are being let go. Not that it doesn't suck any less, just generally curios to what departments got trimmed.
Bearing in mind that this is mostly backroom staff, @IssaBrvndo, it is likely jobs which are duplicated in both Activision and Xbox. For example, you don't need two pay departments when you have only one paymaster, or you don't need two PR departments when one will do the job perfectly well. You'll probably find that some people will also be absorbed into departments that need to expand due to an increased workload, so some that worked for ABK will now work directly for Xbox.
Still really sucks, particularly right now, if you lose your job. We can only hope that they find gainful employment as soon as is possible, and that any severance package they might get is generous...
They got rid of redundant positions and "the fat", same as last time. How could anyone be dumb enough to get upset about this?
@Fiendish-Beaver The only source is Tom Warren who can't get off unless he has made at least two anti-Xbox articles a week. Absolute clown who has no idea what he is talking about and only gets info from employees who were so bad at their jobs that they got fired, same as Jason Schierer.
@Fiendish-Beaver "you don't need two PR departments when one will do the job perfectly well"
Bwahahahaha 🤣🤣. You do know you're talking about Xbox right.
That controller is fire tho
Yep, @NEStalgia, you're right! I should amend that to simply say; you can get shot of Activision's PR department, because Xbox doesn't use one.'... 🤣
@Fiendish-Beaver That makes sense for sure. I also hope that Xbox would help with recommendations or something. It sucks for sure for the people, but as you mentioned they prob got a stellar severance package.
They would be stupid not to. A $60billion takeover of Activision followed by multiple rounds of "we can't afford you anymore" is not a good look for a company.
@LastSaneManOnEarth I can't tell if you are being serious or sarcastic when you say they are removing redundant positions, same as last time? I guess whoever was previously responsible for identifying the redundant positions missed 600 or so the first time. That's a heck of an HR department, as many people seem to guess are the types of redundant positions in question. Although, ActiBlizz did need to deal with a lot of HR complaints, so, maybe?
