Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 is turning out to be a surprisingly huge hit for developer Saber Interactive, with ideas about a third game already floating around at the studio just weeks after the sequel's launch. Having said that, the second game was a long time coming, but the team says that it always had a strong idea for creating a throwback to the Xbox 360 era with SM2.
Talking to GamesRadar in a recent interview, Saber's Dmitriy Grigorenko mentioned that the original Space Marine 2 pitch was to "make a perfect sequel", a sequel that is effectively "a 360 game with a story campaign, some PvP, and a horde mode to accompany it". We'd say the team was largely successful in that endeavour.
"We wanted to make a perfect sequel [to Space Marine] – that was in the original pitch,
The 'perfect sequel' implies it's the exact same game – a 360 game with a story campaign, some PvP, and a horde mode to accompany it. We wanted to make a classic experience."
Elsewhere in the interview, Saber's creative director Oliver Hollis-Leick reminisced about playing Gears of War at a friend's house back in the day, and how a recent visit led to them playing through Space Marine 2 instead. The Gears games certainly seemed to have influenced this Warhammer subseries quite a lot, and playing through SM2 with that same friend "was just this amazing flashback experience!", the developer said.
Here at Pure Xbox, we loved our time with Space Marine 2. Some of us in the office think this is the best co-op shooter to come around in years, maybe even in a generation - yeah, it's really that good. "heavly influenced by gears of war"
Just like the first game.
I loved space marine. I'll play the sequel as soon as I can.
The Original was heavily influenced by GoW too and would recommend it to Playstation owners as the multi-platform closest alternative - but I always felt Gears of War had the edge. But as we haven't had a new Gears of War for a while, this certainly looks a lot of fun...
Gears, probably the greatest mp game of all time in my opinion ,what is it with Sony and ms ignoring games people love , you'd think they didn't like money, ms need to port all the gears games over to ps,inject it with a new lease of life , except judgement, we don't talk about judgement , let's hope they don't mess up the new game, hope it goes back to it's roots, the campaign was a horror game, the sequels lost there way.
I really enjoyed Judgement, @Shalooda. Giving us the backstory to Baird and Cole, plus introducing us to Paddock. Solo on Insane was a thrill ride! I loved what they did in allowing you to make the game still harder by changing the enemies you would face at certain points in the game.
Was it the strongest in the series? No! Absolutely not, but that does not make it a bad game. It's just like with 4 and 5, people just wanted more Marcus, they simply weren't going to accept anything else, even if the game was in fact pretty decent. That said, the Horde Mode was by far the weakest of the series...
@Fiendish-Beaver I disagree, judgement was garbage
I finally pulled the trigger on this today! Have almost completed Star Wars Outlaws, so was looking for a new game to get stuck into. SM2 is now downloaded and ready to go! 😀
I thought Judgement was the best story of the Gears games and was a complete blast when I recently co-opped the campaign with friends. They did drop the ball a bit with whatever they called the Horde mode though.
