In case you missed it, Xbox boss Phil Spencer recently made a light-hearted joke about the button placement on Sony's PlayStation 5 controller, noting how the 'X' button (known as a cross on PlayStation's gamepads) is in "the wrong place".
It's already got some mixed reactions, and now Xbox's official social media account has joined in on the banter, with a very clear reminder about where the 'X' button goes... at least on an Xbox controller:
Again, it is just a funny joke, so don't get too upset by this if you're a fan of Sony's controller. As our friends at Push Square also mention, it's quite impressive how all three platform holders (including Nintendo) place their 'X' button in different locations.
Nintendo places its 'X' button where the 'Y' button is on an Xbox controller, and Sony places the 'X' button where the 'A' button is on Xbox's controller. Interestingly, Xbox's button layout follows in the footsteps of Sega's Dreamcast, but the colour of each button is different.
In some other news this week, Xbox revealed a new transparent controller along with six Design Lab variants.
Do you like where the 'X' button is placed on Xbox controllers, or would you prefer it in a different spot? Let us know in the comments.

All fun and games nothing wrong with a little banter!
It isn't "cross" it is X (eks)
@Spider-Kev it’s a cross on ps not eks. They are all shapes.
Yeah, this has been a fun thing between gamers. I love it (and I hate it when I switch between consoles), hehe.
@PsBoxSwitchOwner How can it be a cross when it's an X?
If I play my switch for any length of time i end up pressing B on the Xbox controller to confirm things and end up cancelling out
Cross button placement is fine where it is. I would, however, love to see Sony embrace offset sticks. Then it would truly be the perfect controller.
This was a good joke when Phil said it, made me giggle. Now the social marketing is taking out all the fun out of it.
@Ricky-Spanish I guess you've never played noughts and crosses.
@MrMagic I play X,s and O,s my friend 🤺
Emulating classic systems has made me respect how similar the playstation and xbox controllers are. Mapping a gamecube game to an xbox controller can be an adventure. Mapping a wii controller to anything can seem like calculus.
I'm fine with the Xbox twitter having more fun.
And I appreciate the 3rd party tools that allow me to use an Xbox controller on other systems so that I don't have to learn the (wrong) button layouts.
I hate doing QTE that use X. Whenever I am playing a game and a QTE comes up I have to stop and think what console I am playing it on and by the time I figure that out, I lose the QTE lol.
Hell, you add a Z and C button in the top right, and you'll realise that (Sega and) Microsoft have been using the same button layout since way back on the Genesis.
Each of the three companies have their way of doing it, and they've not changed in four decades.
PlayStation has shapes because they can't read.
@Fishticon funny, but maybe to be language agnostic
Actually Xbox, I think you guys have x and y in the wrong spots. That's weird
Seen few comments on articles about this saying they get confused which button to press with the X button etc changing but how can that be possible you know where the four buttons are and what they do it's not like you look at the controller before pressing the button😂😭
Forget the X button, it’s the left thumb stick that is in the wrong spot on the PS controller. Hahaha
What happened to that new controller that was rumored with hall effect sensors etc?
Phil Spencer is right... PlayStation put the X button in the wrong location all along.
@Tasuki first time I got an Xbox, some sections in some games were nearly unplayable at first because of this.
@funkhouser Sebile? I think they are holding that back to launch with the new console at this point. It will make a bigger impact coming with the new console. I do want it tho. I liked the leaked specs on it.
Who would have thought it, Sega was right... I hate that each controller has a different configuration now. I got used to the Xbox layout quickly, it kind of makes sense (the A button on Gamecube is just as clever), so I bought an adapter for the other consoles (Switch and PS4). Now, Nintendo looks reversed (B, A), but Japanese read from right to left, so I guess it makes sense for them. The adapter also allowed me to skip the Switch pro controller and a second PS4 controller/battery after the awful PS battery died definitely.
@Fishticon We can read. Just the other day I saw a list of games on the Xbox website that said, "Coming soon to PlayStation!" 😜
@Major_Player Xbox came after PlayStation and Nintendo and Sega so they got it wrong
As a Nintendo main, X only looks normal as the top face button to me.
X is modestly irritating between xb and ps but it's still xb to Nintendo that drives me absolutely nuts. Everything mirrored. I'll never adapt. And since the Xbox/Sega layout is now the standard PC layout for nearly all third party controllers and the PC handhelds, AND Nintendo even copied the Xbox controller but left their own SNES button mapping it drives me even more crazy. Ps being completely different with shapes doesn't give me too much trouble but I do still stumble on x sometimes.
@Ralizah Don't retcon, you were a pony before you were a nintendrone
@HonestHick Yeah I guess that makes sense, a shame though since I was really looking to get one asap. The quiet buttons alone was huge for me since I have my Xbox in the same room where me and my wife sleep.
@Fishticon 🤣🤣 top comment my friend made me laugh.
@Fishticon hahaha
I do wish the 3 could come up with 1 standard for the buttons. I don't know if they are all slightly different for patent reasons or stubbornness but it messes me up when I switch between systems. Maybe my brain is just not flexible enough
I constantly make mistakes when I try playing games on a Nintendo controller where everything is reversed. I don't have that problem with playstation controllers because I would never touch one.
@RentedPanda It's impossible to completely adapt on the fly because you're supposed to react instinctively and not think. I learnt the Sega/Xbox/PC layout after Nintendo/PS and I can't go back now. One interesting thing is that SNES had the accept/main button as B on the left. It was Nintendo DS what started the modern Nintendo layout (accept/jump with the right button). Nintendo 64, GameCube and Wii had special layouts. This means that Nintendo's configuration has changed several times and looks wrong to me, especially the current one.
Funnily, one of the first games I played on Xbox was Grabbed by the Ghoulies (Rare Replay) and there are some difficult button sequences that taught me the new default layout properly.
@funkhouser i know what you mean the quieter buttons was also one of my favorite upgrades coming to it as well. I still love the controller, just want some upgrades to it and the list seem to have a lot of really good things. I am disappointed it’s not out either. But if the November 2026 rumor is true then that’s not all that far away and we will likely see MS launch the new console with this controller and a new Ui. Someting the Series consoles didn’t do and took some heat for in the press. I don’t see many changes coming to series as the work and new updates will all be centered around launching an exciting new console and handheld.
@NEStalgia True, but since the PlayStation buttons are all shapes, I can keep Cross and X separated mentally. The cruel irony of being a PC/Nintendo gamer is that, since PC tends to favor the Xbox setup, I'm kept in a state of perpetual frustration unless I remap buttons. Had to do that on my Steam Deck lol. Mirrored the face button functions in the system so that my finger automatically goes to the position it'd be in on a Ninty pad.
@XNot
🤣🤣🤣
@JoyfulFire you can reverse which button confirms and which cancels in the settings on Switch. Drives me barmy otherwise.
@Ralizah I wish I could remap switch, because im mostly playing with PC/XB controllers 75% of the time, and PS shapes are fine so switch is the only one that's a total mental freeze for me. Though that would break the feel of, say, jump, so maybe that wouldn't work either.
I have both consoles and have no problem with their button layouts.

@Ricky-Spanish The same way it isn’t a “10” that symbol is used for different things. PS buttons have always been shapes and while designed to be language agnostic they are made with the design view of the Japanese. “X” is used as cross very often over there. Look at the monster hunter xx games. (Cross and Double Cross).
But Phil made a joke.
@smoreon
Thank you! I was trying to find that page!
@Ryu_Niiyama Take your hands off me right now
@Fishticon I get it, ha, ha. But Sony did it that way as shapes are a universal language no matter which country you are in
@Balaam_
Many people would not use offset sticks.
Anyone with a small hand will find the stick is too far away for the end of their Thumb. My wife has this experience and as a result she has to rotate her hand on the pad till the thumb is pretty much 45 degrees to the pad. Her horizontal and vertical movements will now be diagonals as a result. She hates it and it's one of the reasons we don't play much Xbox ( I dont have the issue fortunately).
I suspect the above issue is a big deal in Japan too where they often have smaller hands. I suspect its one of the reasons they will never sell xbox in quantity there.
The left stick on the playstation controllers is also in the wrong place, by the way
Glad the millionaire can laugh while the brand he’s being paid for continues to weaken
@PSme Actually, they're numbers. It's the amount of lines per shape.
