Xbox first-party title Towerborne might not have received as much attention as the likes of Indiana Jones and Starfield over the past few days, but it's looking really fun so far - and it's also had a big announcement of its own.
Not only will the game now be launching as a free-to-play title in 2025, but its early access period begins in September exclusively on Steam. In an interview as part of Xbox's Gamescom livestreams, the decision behind this was explained:
"Getting the game into players' hands is super important to us, we want to have that discussion with the community and have them be a part of the game building [process]..."
"Getting there, being able to have that, and have the input and take it in - Steam just happens to do that well for us, and we want to make sure we're fully prepared for when we come to Xbox Game Preview next year and have an expansive number of players coming in that we're truly ready for, and we don't want to disappoint."
Over on Xbox Wire, it's also mentioned that the idea is to "position ourselves so the game is stable and feels great to play before we open up to a wider audience". As for the free-to-play side of things, there's not been as much discussion about that - aside from a desire to achieve "complete approachability" and emulate the success of The Banner Saga: Factions on PC. For now though, early access will be available through a paid Founder's Pack.
Although it's a shame we're going to have to wait until 2025 for Towerborne on Xbox, everything we're seeing suggests it'll be a great addition to the free-to-play library. You can check out the new trailer for it up above!

Sneaky feeling the delay is to port it to PS5.
Much easier to test the Xbox and PS versions with the Pc version? Weirdly makes sense…
Yeah, this purely has to be in preparation for a PS5 port alongside or not long after the Xbox version. Man is it tough being a fan of this blobby green mess right now.
Just as a reminder, the Beta was on Xbox, so they have actively decided to stop supporting the console and launch exclusively on Steam. Even Xbox first party is now skipping Xbox. They can spin it however they want, but this is just the start of what you can expect from a company that values its own console less than everything else.
I just hope Stoic survives the absolute disaster that this game release seems to have become. The Banner Saga was great, and I'd like to see more games like that from them. Whatever this ends of being doesn't look anything like that...
Towerborne has an Xbox insider program like Sea of Thieves. Wonder if that's another reason why it's Steam first.
@InvaderFromSpace no they've not stopped supporting Xbox. It has an Xbox insider program for the same reason as what there doing on Steam.
@InvaderFromSpace
I didn't even look at it like that lmao 😂😂
After all this 'next year is the year' bs I didn't think this would be what was awaiting us on xbox 😂
Most PC players hate getting games through the Microsoft Store (which is probably another reason Game Pass isn't as popular on PC).
Sometimes they are missing features. Sometimes there are bugs and crashes that don't exist anywhere else. Sometimes performance is worse than Steam. And, of course, you can't use unofficial mods on Microsoft Store versions of games because the directory is read-only.
So, this the most sense on the PC side of things.
Translation: no one uses the Xbox PC store unless it's for Game Pass games, so if we're going to put the game out in early access to test things then we'd better put it somewhere that actually has players.
If the next Xbox is supposed to be basically a PC like has been rumoured it makes sense, try on PC because it's basically all going to be PC going forward. If not it's just another bad look that really makes it seem like console is an afterthought.
@Markatron84 I mean, all I use it for is Minecraft VR.
@Markatron84 I mean this doesn't stop them from releasing it on console at the same time as a Steam release. It's a pretty weird choice, even while acknowledging no one wants to use the Xbox app/PC store.
Or maybe they are 'right' to use Steam who's audience are much more use to playing 'early access' builds on their platform - some that are even pre-alpha builds. It may also 'help' that its the PC build too so can tweak that quickly before porting a more complete/finished build to Console.
Early Access seems to mean something different to Console owners - that they expect the game to be much more polished and/or less inclined to 'feedback' - seeing it more as a way to play the game 'early', than help the Devs.
