As part of QuakeCon 2024 today, Bethesda has unveiled significantly enhanced versions of the original DOOM games in the form of DOOM + DOOM 2, which is available now on Xbox including as part of Xbox Game Pass!
In addition to the two main games, the package also includes the following bits of content:
- DOOM
- DOOM II
- TNT: Evilution
- The Plutonia Experiment
- Master Levels for DOOM 2
- No Rest for the Living
- Sigil
- Legacy of Rust (a new episode created in collaboration by id Software, Nightdive Studios and MachineGames)
- A new Deathmatch map pack featuring 25 maps
What you're probably most interested in though is the addition of online multiplayer and co-op for up to 16 players with crossplay! There's also an in-game mod browser, the ability to switch between original and remixed soundtracks, improved performance for up to 4K, 120FPS on Xbox Series consoles, and lots of new accessibility options.
You can start playing DOOM + DOOM 2 right now with Xbox Game Pass, or alternatively it's available for the very reasonable price of £7.99 / $9.99. Better yet, if you already own DOOM or DOOM 2 on Xbox, it's a free upgrade!
"Developed by id Software, and originally released in 1993, DOOM pioneered and popularized the first-person shooter, setting a standard for all FPS games. The critically acclaimed sequel, DOOM II, followed in 1994. Now the definitive, newly enhanced versions of DOOM + DOOM II are available as a combined product."

So these games have been enhanced, yet again?
Can we play Brutal Doom now with this one?
I just like that my copy of Ultimate Doom on Steam updated to Doom 1 & 2.
I do need to see if the original DOS version of Doom II is included as I only had access to the original version of Ultimate Doom - especially since I can't just buy Doom 2 on Steam now with this being combined.
Why does this matter?!
To use the original WADs for other Source Ports!
Legacy of Rust is the first new* official Classic Doom content in 14 years 🤯 That alone makes this worth it!
The completely remade soundtrack by Andrew Hulshult sweetens the deal too. Buy it!
(*I know Romero did Sigil, but that was only released an add-on using existing assets.)
I hope they have fixed the unity 50hz stutter that the current Xbox ports has.
Edit: they've gone over to the kex engine so imagine that issue will be fixed
It's really cool, so much smoother have access to both games from 1 game screen. Graphics have massive overhaul. Got mine free as had the first two games already. Nice to see old game brought up to modern day.
Basically they've added Final Doom, just split up
Unless you've never played the original games before, Voxel Doom and Doom Infinite are arguably the best ways to play these games now.
@niggyt2004 Me too! That's nice of Microsoft. Nintendo and Sony would have ripped us off.
How many times have these been re-released now?
@GamingFan4Lyf I just checked and if you open the folder containing your Steam copy of this game there is a folder called rerelease. All the WADs are in there easily accessible. Just remember Putonia and TNT are listed as 2 separate WADs.
@stefan771 just going for Xbox releases but off the top of my head Doom 3 limited edition, then Doom 3 Resurrectiom of Evil expansion both on the original Xbox, Xbox Live Arcade on 360 which is backwards compatible with Xbox One then the Unity port in 2019 and now this.
The only major consoles since the mid 90s not to get a port are PS2, GameCube, Wii, and Wii U.
That’s only counting official ones though. Id open sourced the code back in 1997 hence all the ports to everything under the sun. If you can get code to execute on a device it is more surprising not to have a Doom port of some sort. I’ve even seen versions running on stuff like the ZX Spectrum albeit terribly.
@stefan771 I find it amazing how some people still keep getting excited about the same old 30 year old games getting enhanced again and again.
What a surprise, I'm going to download it.
@Glassneedles I played the first game on New Nintendo 3DS, unofficial version, of course. I haven't played much the previous Xbox version of Doom and Doom II that run on Unity, but they say that they are not consistent. I started playing the new Xbox release today and it's flawless. I beat the first episode.
@Glassneedles I know Ultimate Doom had the Rerelease folder before it updated to this collection - but those WADs for Ultimate Doom had the edited Medical Kits with the Green Cross from the Unity version as opposed to the Red Cross of the DOS version.
@GamingFan4Lyf hold on a minute as I call the Red Cross
@Glassneedles I did confirm, both DOS versions of DOOM and DOOM II are available.
Though the DOOM 1 & 2 version is amazing in its own right. Played it at 165 FPS (only because I forgot to turn VSync off on my computer).
so now i can play my xbox 360 versions of doom on series X the 2019 version of doom on series X and now this
3 versions of the same game on one console
@FraserG are we not mentioning that if you already own either Doom or Doom II, your game is upgraded to this Doom + Doom II bundle free of charge? That's the big cool thing here, surely?
@Markatron84 Sorry, this landed when none of us were officially working, so it was a bit of a rushed post. I've added it in now 👍
Got to love Id software, sticking to their pc roots of giving great value for money with a free update. I'd highly recommend the original Doom games as a very important part of game history
@FraserG Slacking I see lol
@Vipor007 Blame Bethesda for making announcements at stupid times 😅
@FraserG it was inconsiderate of them, to be fair. 🤣
@FraserG They should have thought Pure Xbox want to write about this, so we'll check to see if they are still up lol
@Vipor007 EXACTLY 🤣
@Vipor007 Final Doom was already included with the previous ports of both Doom AND Doom 2.
@SCHONBOB I'm excited to play this
@Vipor007 absolutely!
The engine is KEX Engine by Nightdive Studios, that also runs Doom 64 (2020).
Anybody else mess with the mods yet? I got this on both Switch and Series X, and will let you download tons of mods that apparently the game can't run on either console. While I adore the mod support, a way to filter between what can/can't be run on console would be phenomenal.
As an avid Trophy/Achievement hunter, I am very pleased with them in this collection. Seems the devs avoided most of the common pitfalls when they curated the list—no server dependent multiplayer only achievements, minimal difficulty related achievements, and nothing particularly tedious looking. In lieu of some sort of standardization across the industry as to what is an acceptable achievement and what is not, a list like this is the best one could hope for.
@Balaam_ Right. I triggered a lot of achievements the first day I played. Some people are not appreciating this bundle enough, it has everything that has been officially released plus improved engine, new content, an optional remixed soundtrack, 120fps... The last time these games were released, it was a technical mess. This is the first time I am really having a good time with the classic games.
