It's no secret that Microsoft Rewards has suffered quite a few setbacks over the past year, although one new feature that's been added along the way is something called the "Weekly Console Bonus", which allows users to rack up hundreds of points per-week for simply playing games on a daily basis.
As good as it is though, it's about to get worse for everyone in the UK. As of today, the standard Weekly Console Bonus (not counting the extra 25 points for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate members) has dropped to 150 points per-week rather than 250 points, and the move has been accompanied by this message:
"Starting Monday, 5 August, the Weekly Console Bonus will now reward Xbox Rewards members in the United Kingdom 150 points for players that play on their Xbox consoles five or more days in a week."
As you can see, no explanation has been given for the decrease in points per-week, but the decision follows a string of Microsoft Rewards reductions over the past 12 months-or-so. There's also no word on whether this will extend beyond the United Kingdom at some point, but for now, it seems to be exclusive to that part of the world.
Despite the downsides to Microsoft Rewards these days, it's still very possible to earn over 10,000 points per-month if you work hard at it - we've got a guide elsewhere on Pure Xbox that will help you maximise your potential earnings:

With how much they've been nerfing the rewards program, it is the the point that working for an extra 20-30 minutes is less effort than gathering up enough points for ganepass, or really any reward.
And IMO, that's when a program loses all value.
Disappointing but let’s not forget how incredibly generous Rewards are for those that have them in their region - rewards have paid for my Gamepass Ultimate for the last 4 consecutive months, and for 6 out of 8 months this year….and the next 2 months are already covered by rewards……so this is hardly something to have a panic attack about.
This particular nerf has made me lose interest in bothering to put energy into getting the points. I was doing the daily quests, weekly and achieving the monthly quest. But the weekly console bonus was my main source of points. Dropping it by 100 points a week makes the whole thing a bigger grind than I can stand.
It's just a matter of time for the nerf to reach other regions. They've been slowly killing the program.
yeah, having moved to CORE from GPU, and now this, it's no longer worth the effort spending time on this for me. not worth the effort
It's still 250 here in Ireland 😎🇮🇪🤺
Why drop 100 points that doesn’t make any sense to me. Didn’t they also increase the prices for the rewards as well?
Considering its points for just turning on your console 5days out of 7, not exactly a 'chore' for gamers, I can't really complain - same with all the other activities for 'points'.
Obviously, the reduction in the amount of points overall is not great for those of us who had become accustomed to accumulating enough points/rewards a month to pay for GPU for example but paying for one in every 2 months (50%) to me would still be worth doing. That would still save me £90 a year on GPU alone, let alone any additional points I can use for Xbox credit to buy games/content too...
I spent a lot of time trying build up the points in July just to see what I could get. I think I got about 2,500 last month.
I moved from Ps to xbox about 2 years ago and couldn't believe that you could use msp like actual currency, this is such a big win compared to what ps offered, I'm surprised I didn't know about it before, otherwise I would of swapped sooner (the series s won me over)
My only gripe is we have no road map, or any heads up on their plans regarding the msp system.
The only news I got was ,"we are making notices easier in the app"
But hey,beggars can't be choosers, right 👍
The points are cents and fractions of cents that add up over time. It is meant to save you a few bucks, "organically." You get points for playing games, you don't play games to get points. Many of us approach it as the latter. The rewards should be just that, and an additional "little push" to get Xbox and Game Pass players to play daily.
Personally I cannot really complain that Microsoft are doing this as I have over the past 7 or 8 years got a lot of games on their store for sometimes nothing or pennies.
It was good while it lasted.
rewards has been good it paid for my series X and i get gamepass ultimate free every month still should just about be able to squeeze 12000 points out a month.
free gaming for 4 years cant argue with that its been a good run
It seems like they are slowly nerfing it now so it will be near enough impossible at one point to get the highest tier of Gamepass each month with points. I can actually understand why if that's the case as I imagine there many who have years stacked up for free. I myself had two years worth at one point before I finally let it expire last month more because I realised how little I was using the service any more and it was just a subscription ticking down and since I still have over 300,000 points and I worked it out that now with all the nerfs I would be able to save up more points by not using it to auto renew every month then I may as well do that until I am ready to use the points again.
They really are starting to try to claw back some of that acquisition money!
The biggest kick in the teeth about this points nerf is its only happening in the UK! Its not happening in USA, its not happening in Iran, it's not happening in Botswana.... just the UK. Feels like some kind of discrimination against Britons from the Microsoft corporation!?!?! But that's just my opinion, don't know if anyone else feels the same way?
I cannot complain as I should still just about get a free 1 month game pass ultimate each month (12000 points). I am currently subscribed up to mid 2026. When It gets to the point where they reduce the points so I don't then I will probably let GPU lapse eventually. I have many hundreds of Epic, Steam, GOG etc games to play.
I am in the US, but I can guarantee you this is coming here. MS has been lowering the amount of points on a regular basis over the past year.
That said, again, its free money basically, so can we really complain? I currently average about 10k a month(with the 275 from the weekly bonus) doing essentially nothing outside of what I would normally do. This allows me to get 3 months of GPU free for every 1 that I pay for, which is fine by me. It certainly beats out any of the competitors' rewards programs. (Note: Sony and Nintendo no longer have any comparable program, with Sony shutting down Sony Rewards and Stars being very different, and Nintendo's being on purchase of things only)
@Zenszulu I think that's kind of the point. They need to stop handing out subs for free and start collecting revenue. If the value is there, people will stay. (I personally find the full price worth it, but each person will be different based on perceived value)
@Runex2121 I am not disagreeing it wouldn't surprise me if they are loosing a lot of potential money through free subscribers although I would be interested in finding out just how many people actually don't pay for Gamepass as a result of rewards because they made it way too easy for people to stack up huge amounts of points at one stage. They have caused themselves to devalue their own subscription service though by having it be given away for free for way too long not only through rewards but at one point they were doing promotions with way too many other things giving 3 month subscriptions away now they find themselves in a situation where they have had little to no growth for some time despite the expectation that customers would flock to them upon buying Activision-Blizzard.
Shame. I've never used it myself, but I know a lot of people used the rewards program to try and get more value.
The optics of the changes they are making are quite clear. How people come out to shill for this change is beyond me....
Trillion dollar company doesn't care about you. Quelle surprisel 😀
Another big eff you by Microsoft. Dont worry though Microsoft as Im nerfing my gaming time and spending on Xbox by concentrating and spending my money on other platforms.
In related news, Microsoft is proud to announce the launch of XboxSucks.com, a site devoted to preaching the truth about how awful the Xbox platform is, and why Playstation is the best console other than Nintendo, both of which are just so much better than the terrible Xbox. BUY XBOX SERIES X |$499.99|
Again, with all the negative pr of late they come out and nerf yes that will be a good move.
@NEStalgia amazing!!!
Rewards was very generous to me for a number of years but I cashed out recently. Just lost all motivation for it following all the nerfs. It was good, really good for me. I earned a number of games and bought 3 controllers using solely reward points but I lost in interest.
Imagine only playing games to soak up points in order to continue playing games. Sheeez!
Do you spend too much money on stuff you normally wouldn't buy in the supermarkets just for the BOGOF offers and Nectar points?
Yet ANOTHER nerf. It's not that you can't still earn points through Microsoft Rewards (you can if your region is supported) but the trouble is it's takes longer than ever to earn less and for me that is no longer worth it anymore. It simply takes too long to earn the points now.
Completely given up on Microsoft rewards.....a while ago....and I used to do all the tasks etc religiously...it was a super generous program for a long time....but now it's crap
That’s sad. Sorry, UK friends!
@Ricketty_Roll I have game pass and Microsoft rewards and rarely spend any actual money on games anymore. I usually get maybe 4-5 free games per year. It’s nice. This year will be Fantasian, dragon quest 3, metaphor refantazio, wizardry remake, unicorn overlord, and several lower priced games on sale. Baldurs gate 3 late last year. Between all those and game pass, I don’t need to buy anything.
@R2DTARD77 Exactly on the same position, got a series X two years ago cause I couldn't get a Ps5 and I was amazed about how good a deal is what MS offers on Xbox.
Particularly amazed with the rewards programme, at last one that actually gives something back quite often. Despire recent downgrades, I still find it excellent, but agree would be good to get better view of what's coming.
@Runex2121 Agree and similar for me, I get at least 1 month out of every 3 just through points + I got a corporate 15% discount. Doing nothing too special, just the console quests and bonus + use Bing instead of google. You get an awful lot of points doing my usual searches with it.
@jesse_dylan All power to you, Jesse. I'm not knocking anyone who benefits from the reward points, I just don't get the grind for reward points for the sake of it? My post was a little flippant LoL, I just think the reward points are a bonus, not something to grind for as if they are achievements to 100% But, each to their own, I guess.
My Game Pass Ultimate is still good until 2026, and I'm about 7K away from another 3 month top up
They can keep playing these silly games with the rewards all they want, i'm still not paying for Game Pass, get bent MS lol
I'm hoping the console gets properly exploited with a custom firmware soon. I heard there was some progress.
Xbox Game Pass Ultimate is 12,000 points a month and buying 1 month of Game Pass Ultimate just awarded me with 216 points.
I also am an Xbox Ambassador earning 1 month of GPU every 3 months - effectively buying 2 months, get third month free - pay for 8m and get 4m Free - so between earning Rewards (inc spending 'money' on games/content etc) and doing the Ambassadors activities too could make Game Pass Ultimate Free if you can earn 24k points every Quarter....
@datamonkey You guys DO realize that Microsoft's market cap went up $1.4 trillion during the duration of the ABK trial...right? That's 14 Sony's added to their 20 Sony's at the start (to provide some perspective).
@Ricketty_Roll I probably spend 30 minutes daily. I’d say doing searches takes the most time. If I didn’t do that, I wouldn’t be getting free games. Maybe some people have money and would rather spend that. Game pass and rewards are the big reason I’m on Xbox. Seems like it would be pretty hard to say no to 4+ free games every year!
@theduckofdeath not quite dude. Sonys market cap is about $105b currently which is about 75x the increase you mentioned.
@datamonkey My bad — I meant to write $1.4 trillion, not billion.
@theduckofdeath ah gotcha, was a sizeable increase for sure!
As Microsoft is a company a business giving away free money however much in the form of reward points everyone should be grateful and not moan I have 60k to use probably nearer to 100k come the November Black Friday sales so I’m very grateful thank you Microsoft.
@Ricketty_Roll Absolutely agree its not something to grind. Just switch to bing for search and play as you would normally and every few months get some free stuff. No effort. If your grinding for points then you really should look at what you could do instead to make money because its not a good way to make income through effort)
Without checking for certain, but as 8 Oct 24, you can still get enough points/mth to effectively get Ultimate for free. You can still do "fake" searches - though it pointlessly delays now. And this 15 min XBox / PC use is pointless. You can just leave it working in the background, have a drink, by the time your back yo'uve got 30 points! Why play jewel - it is inane to me.
But no doubt there will be an XMAS offer, this buy a years Ultimate. The moment rewards doesn't cover ultimate, I'm done. More & more games are series X, and just not worth £500
