The Borderlands movie has officially bombed at the box office and Gearbox head Randy Pitchford has spun this in the best way possible with another teaser of a fourth major game.
In a brief post on social media platform X, Pitchford mentioned how his team was working extra hard "four" fans on what's next, brushing off the live-action movie disaster starring Cate Blanchett, Jamie Lee Curtis, Kevin Hart and Jack Black. Here's what he had to say:
"So what you're saying is: You like what my friends and I do with our Borderlands video games even more than you like what some of the biggest and best cast and crew of film makers on the planet have done. I'm super flattered! We're working extra hard four you on what's next...."
Once again, this isn't the first time there's been a 'Borderlands 4' teaser. Alongside the acquisition of Gearbox Entertainment earlier this year in March, it was mentioned how the "next installment" in the series was on the way. Pitchford also recently told GamesRadar how Gearbox wasn't going to make fans wait for a long time before it was officially announced.
The Borderlands movie was reportedly made on a budget of around $145 million and recouped just over $16 million in its opening weekend. Early critic reviews last week suggested it could potentially be the "worst" movie of 2024.
Will you be watching the Borderlands movie, or would you rather forget this ever happened and focus your energy on a fourth major game? Let us know in the comments.

despite how bad it’s been for borderlands i still can’t wait for 4 .
It's the first weekend id say it should make most it's money back the film was never gonna be on the level of the godfather or something like that give them a break it's just a comedy!! Id say it's ok couldn't be that bad and I don't care if they don't take the games as gospel either for the story!
Randy Pitchford had a bit of a meltdown over the weekend on twitter over the movie. To the point he inadvertently blocked several well known Borderlands content creators who have supported the franchise since the original game. (I believe he later unblocked 3 of them.)
I will watch it eventually when it hits a streaming service, which might be sooner than expected given the opening reception.
As for Borderlands 4 I will be excited for it when we have solid details & release dates but until then not really bothered.
@Ricky-Spanish $16 million out of $115 million seems like a good start, but it's not even half of the story. That $16 million first is subject to regional sales taxes (for the sake of simplicity let's average those out to around 10%), and then the theaters will likely be taking at least 45% of the first weekend sales. Meanwhile, the marketing budget for this kind of movie is astronomical. A rule of thumb is that they will spend the budget of the movie again on marketing.
So that makes it more like $7.9 million out of the $225 million it needs to break even.
$115 million spent to make the movie means it needs to make over $300 million to make a profit. Trash movie is a well deserved flop.
Still trying to play the older games online in coop. Anyone else having issues connecting to other people? A year ago it sometimes didn't work, but trying again a few days later did the job. Since earlier this year it just doesn't work anymore (tbh I stopped trying 2-3 months ago or so).
Just put a fork in it, this franchise has exploited it's fans to the max and lost any goodwill they had left.
It's like look, I loved Borderlands and I still enjoy playing 1, 2 and the pre-sequel, but 3 wasn't exactly a favorite, Tiny Tina Wonderlands was highly divisive, and the new movie as well as the New Tales from the Borderlands was just a total bust. I am not expecting anything great from them anymore. I have no interest in keeping up with it. I'm moving on.
@Vordus Well I'm glad it's not my money ha but I'll eventually watch it id say it's an ok movie I mean I seen some garbage movies over the last few years the critics love
Randy Pitchford is the human embodiment of cringe. Every time he opens his mouth, tweets or leaves pornography in a Medieval Times, I die a little inside.
Plus he shipped Duke Nukem Forever and Aliens: Colonial Marines with a clear conscience.
"We're working extra hard four you"
But you give us jack black and Kevin hart? Really hard to believe you anymore after that.
@Markatron84 wow that was a statement and a half…hope you write the prologue on his memoirs
If you know nothing about the game it's not a bad movie, not great either but not bad.
If you love the game, you'll probably hate the movie. You were warned.
Well the AC movie didn't stop them. Though it says a lot how much studios learn, if the movie being bad is something maybe the audience may still buy the next game but doesn't change much. They carry on, the movie is what it is of dialogue/cast and execution of the Borderlands universe and characters from 2 of the main characters.
It does what it does. I don't know or care much for some of the cast I know some of them and a few movies they are in and how not for me the humour of them are so anything is possible in the BL movie as not into the humour/dialogue anyway only the gameplay being fine.
Audiences that like/hate the movie have their minds made up, those that still buy the games still will or may change their minds.
To me eh 3 is ok, Tiny Tina is ok and a good theme change/lower age rating. The loot system is fair the dialogue is annoying. Play for the gameplay but not as the best things ever played far from it.
But got plenty of PS3/360/Wii and older shooters to play and enjoy so hardly care whether a new Borderlands comes out or not really.
Gearbox will always make another anywhere and may or may not try anything else anymore.
In the mean time other old shooters studios don't care about to enjoy including Brothers in Arms and getting into Road to Hill 30 currently and powered through Hell's Highway prior.
@AlwaysPlaying come on, you were all thinking it.
