At some point during its mad spending spree, Embracer Group acquired Borderlands developer Gearbox as it sought to strengthen its development portfolio. However, the company has since begun shedding studios, and Gearbox is now heading back to 2K - the team who helped it build the Borderlands series.
This time around though, Gearbox will be fully-owned by Take-Two Interactive. Yep, the publishing team is in the midst of a $460 million deal to bring Gearbox completely under its wing - with a new Borderlands title also confirmed to be in development.
Here's a bit more on what Gearbox has in the pipeline following the news of this acquisition:
"Gearbox currently has six key interactive entertainment projects in various stages of development, including five sequels, two of which are from the Borderlands and Homeworld franchises, and at least one exciting new intellectual property. Beyond these plans, Take-Two believes that there are incremental opportunities to invest in new projects and to expand Gearbox’s proven franchises."
Borderlands 3 is almost five years old at this point, so the next game in the series is likely well into development at this stage. Series spin-off Tiny Tina's Wonderlands did launch in 2022 though, as Gearbox continues to expand its long-running FPS franchise.

Solid news. I am ready for another borderlands game.
They'd damn well better call it 4derlands.
@Markatron84 Borderlands Fourderlands would be hysterical
Predictable soft landing spot for Gearbox but was kinda hoping Microsoft would have made a move as the studios are going at fire sale prices….
I honestly thought Gearbox was already under 2K's wing.
Love me some borderlands. Can't wait!
I read that embracer still kept the publishing arm. But can't believe they bought them for more than a billion and sold them for less than half that.
Any chance anyone is playing Borderlands (specifically Borderlands 2) and can't play online coop with someone else? Was playing with my brother for quite some time, but since a few weeks it doesn't work anymore. Other games still work, so it shouldn't be a general issue...
Shame, with Saber and Toys For Bob going independent ive been hoping to see more studios follow suit, too bad Gearbox couldn't do it.
@AlwaysPlaying
Microsoft just fired 1,900 to remain profitable (Spencer's words) and you want them to buy even more?
Borderlands 4 seemed like a forgone conclusion, but nice to get confirmation. I guess?
I enjoyed BL3 and BL:TTW, but the series peaked with BL2. It will be interesting to see if the change in ownership leads to better games.
This is great news. I don’t care who buys the studios that Embracer owned, as long as they wind up leaving Embracer, that is amazing news. I’m a huge Borderlands fan and have no doubt we will see Borderlands 4 faster and it will be much higher quality now than it would have been under Embracer.
I’m hoping MS buys the Tomb Raider IP off of them next.
Part of me really, really, wishes Microsoft bought them.
Then the logical side of my brain knows, it was best Microsoft did not.
As much as I want a 4th one I can't help but feel that 2 cannot be topped. They can try but there was just something special about 2.
@CutchuSlow It's the restocking fee for buyer's remorse. They bought it but then found out Randy was included. 50% restocking fee on the return, minus a handling charge.
@GamingFan4Lyf Yeah… This a Sony style purchase. Borderlands has literally been a backbone franchise of 2k for over a decade. The fact it took them this long to purchase gearbox is amazing. But Take-Two is stingy, so not surprising.
@LX_FENIX Not every studio wants to be independent. Gearbox was independent before the Embracer purchase, and it seems it just not the life they want.
@AverageGamer
There is a lot more pressure being independent. You have more freedom, but that comes at a cost. just look at Double Fine as a perfect example. Tim Schafer wanted to be bought by MS. He has openly talked about the downside of being independent.
@ShadowofTwilight Yep! This one specifically as I really enjoyed Borderlands and was hoping they were going to switch out Clippy for Claptrap…..
Haven't really enjoyed Borderlands since the pre sequel was a great 360 game though
@RIghteousNixon Yup. Financial stability vs creative freedom.
@AlwaysPlaying same if Phil wants this game pass model
@AlwaysPlaying
and now you still have that option without other people getting screwed over because one company likes to spend spend spend. Great isn't it?
That is a nice logical fit as they often published through 2K games.
Hopefully it doesn’t suck like 3 did. Hopefully they are smart and don’t tell people to not buy the game if you don’t like the woke BS.
