Yesterday, the Xbox 360 store officially closed down for good. All digital content that hadn't been brought over to the new backwards compatible storefront has now disappeared - and strangely, so has the whole store section of the Xbox 360 dashboard.
Posted on Twitter late last night, down below we can see a new look at how the 360 dashboard is laid out after Microsoft's store closure. We were expecting blank tiles here, or maybe an error message when you entered the store - but the entire store section has just been completely removed from the dash!
We suppose it does look cleaner this way, it just seems so bare compared to what we're used to seeing from this final iteration of the Xbox 360 dashboard. Oh well, at least the servers remain live and players should be able to access their purchase/download history for the foreseeable future.
In other strange Xbox 360 news, it's been spotted that the original version of Sonic Generations has also vanished from the Xbox Store - including on the modern backwards compatible storefront. Whether this is to do with the upcoming Sonic X Shadow Generations remaster, we're not sure, but it remains live on other platforms at the time of posting.
Anyway, we hope to see Sonic Generations return to the store despite SEGA's upcoming remaster, but as for everything stuck on that old Xbox 360 Marketplace - that's all officially gone forever. Rest in peace, Xbox 360 store.
Do you think the 360 dash looks weird now? Tell us your thoughts on its new look down below.

Really it goes to show how much of the dashboard was one giant advertising board
How do you download your games from the 360 now? From purchase history? That section is broken, it messed up with my account and had to call MS Support to fix it
Does it load quicker now though?
I can hear the wind blowing through that empty space...๐
@Ribbitsneed I just went to my download history on the 360.
@Ribbitsneed it is under purchase history. Mine wasn't working before either but it's working now since they got rid of the store.
@Enigk yeah a little faster. But if you plan on reinstalling a previous owned game I'd suggest using a wired connection instead of wireless for Internet. I was reinstalling a 14 gig game and almost 12 hours later it was at 32 percent. I have 300mps. Plugged Ethernet cable in got it done within an hour.
@Enigk it seems slower to me, as if it's trying to access the store and then failing before loading. That said I've only used it a little bit this week before and after to play dead rising so I don't have a strong memory of it.
An end of an era right here.
Thank you for the memories and the great games, Xbox 360.
For me, the Xbox 360 'died' when the Xbox One released as I moved on. My 360 was plugged into my Bedroom TV for a while but rarely (if ever) turned on. Then when BC came to XB1, I did play a few '360' games on my XB1 but haven't played any 360 era games despite having the option too on my Series X.
I loved my N64 too for example but when I bought my Xbox (OG), I gave my N64 to my Kids to play in their bedroom. I'm a hoarder and always think I'll keep it just in case I want to play/finish something, but the reality is that 'new' games on 'new' hardware scratch that itch and then when you go back, the old Games are not as 'great' as they seemed.
I can't play 'Goldeneye' or 'Perfect Dark' today because they feel awful look really rough and despite playing better than they did on N64, really don't play as well as modern games.
At most, I'll go back 1 gen - especially now as Series X feels more like an iterative upgrade as most releases are cross-gen and those that aren't, aren't developing entirely new Genres or experiences - its more about better lighting (RT), loading times and graphical fidelity than creating games that were impossible to make on older Gen.
Makes sense. Why have something on the screen that doesn't do anything anymore take up space on the screen and RAM wise.
Thanks for the memories 360 store.
This is already a slippery slope, but Microsoft should have no reason to ever close the 360 download/MP servers. What's the damn point of paying for Gold if it's not first and foremost meant to pay for upkeep for all Live? Giving the execs an extra quarterly bonus between studio shutterings?
No. I really want to hear an answer from them on this. That's my make or break moment with Xbox after all the "preserving history" trumpeting they've made.
Rest in peace, Vigilante 8 Arcade. ๐ญ ๐ญ ๐ญ
@BAMozzy On the contrary, I still return to Perfect Dark every now and then. GoldenEye being released last year with Rare Replay was wonderful, and it's just as fun to me now as it was in 1997. I wish the FPS genre could replicate the magic of those 2 titles today; the spy genre is virtually dead.
The loss of Vigilante 8 Arcade is another huge loss, which again the modern market offers nothing like it.
And I love BWC. This past May I finished Far Cry for the first time, with several others from XB/360 eras waiting to be started. I also chipped away again at Timesplitters 2 a few weeks ago on XSX, and I have zero complaints. ๐
@EVIL-C It was so wonderful playing Bond, huge thanks to the Pure Xbox community who mentioned Replay was on sale when the Goldeneye news came out.
My teenage daughter actual came in and watched me play for a bit and she said
" I wish they still made games like this, just looks simple and fun"
Ah the memories, watching Xbox get all the best ports, 1st dibs on COD maps. The absurd console wars, E3 goodness.....
So long 360! Thanks for all the games! Sad day for sure but I take comfort in my 800+ digital purchases and 650 physical games I own for 360 and the original Xbox game discs it still plays! Iโll wager that the ps3 store will be next.
@CallMeDuraSouka ๐๐ฅนโค๏ธ Wow, see I love hearing stories like that. Were I ever to find myself being a parent someday, I'd make sure to expose them to as many of the timeless classics as possible. ๐
I too re-bought Rare Replay digitally just so I could own GoldenEye. ๐
Hey, Microsoft finally managed to deliver an ad-free dashboard, and it only took what, 13 years?
