Tech outlet WIRED has put out a big report this week on AI in the video game industry - and that very report claims that Call of Duty has previously sold some AI generated content via the Modern Warfare 3 storefront.
There's been no confirmation of this from the teams behind the series, but according to the outlet, AI had a hand in creating this cosmetic pack for MW3. We'll include a tweet below to show the supposed AI developed content:
Now, because lots of cosmetic DLC is regularly rotated in and out of the Call of Duty store, this pack isn't necessarily purchasable now. The report says that the pack was "made by the end of the year" - that being the end of 2023; when Modern Warfare 3 first launched.
The report also claims that by July 2023, Activision had "approved the use of certain generative AI tools in creating concept art and marketing materials", but no specific examples of this being put into practice were mentioned - outside of the above DLC pack.
Anyway, we must stress that this is all reported information at the moment and shouldn't be taken as gospel - we just figured that it was interesting to think about nonetheless. We've heard about AI in lots of industries in recent months, so we're bound to see the topic crop up more and more in gaming over the coming years.

“Controversial?” Nope. Literally any other sector is utilizing it to increase productivity and the comments won’t age well. It’s like people complaining about computers replacing typewriters. As an average Joe I don’t find it controversial at all. It opens up different possibilities and jobs. And frees up time for people to do other things.
I play video games to learn the necessary skills to survive my robotic overlords one day…
AI is a great tool if used correctly. And if it can be used to free up time for developers, that is great because as we know, games take forever to make now.
This is just a "report" trying to cause internet drama 🙄
Let's do some bad cod news today, the first cod ever on game pass ffs...
Ruh-roh Raggy.
Ah lovely fake outrage
I'm not against using AI in videogame development even on the "art" side. AI is going to bring the evolution that game development has needed for a while now.
Define “AI”. Fact is what we now call “generative AI” has been used in games for decades, it was just called different things like “procedural generation” and wasn’t as advanced as it is now. Technology advances, devs will use these tools. This is normal.
How are people excusing this? Activision is a multibillion dollar corporation that is owned by a TRILLION dollar corporation. There's should be absolutely no excuse on why a company with that much money and resources can't even pay an artist or freelancer to make a weapon or weapon skin for them.
And then people wonder why Microsoft is raising prices and shutting down studios and whatnot. It's almost like their fan base is licking their boots and allowing this to happen!
It'd be one thing if they were just simply using AI tools. AI can be a great tool, but AI generated art being used for one of the biggest game franchises? No. If an indie developer can, so can a mega developer.
@PassePartout I could care less what you have to say. I'm fully aware that what I said is very controversial in this website's community. And I don't care. Go complain to somebody else about this.
First of all who cares? As long the content is good of course. Developers might use AI to assist them in some tasks to be more performant, that's absolutely fine if they do it right and smart and use it only as a helping tool.
Second, is this a coincidence that this report comes out the same day that the first COD game hits gamepass?
I don't think people realize how big and messy of a difference there is between A.I. Generated and A.I. Assisted. There's 0 reason any of the 3 CoD developers should be cutting corners with how many entire extra studios have been killed to help them alongside their own teams.
