As you know, we often like to take a look at the "Top Paid" Xbox charts and see which games are selling particularly well on the Xbox Store, but it's very rare that we look beyond the likes of the UK and US stores.
Today, we've taken a peek over at the Japan store, and it's shaping up very differently! In fact, the top 3 games provide the most interesting differences here, with the new release of Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord taking the top spot, closely followed by the brilliant Unicorn Overlord and music-puzzle game PuzzMiX.
We'll throw the top 10 below - keep in mind this is based on games that have been selling particularly well on the Xbox Store in recent days. Some, such as Dying Light, remain high in the list as they've only just gone off sale.
- Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord
- Unicorn Overlord
- PuzzMiX
- Dying Light
- Minecraft
- Survive on Raft
- Persona 4 Golden
- EA Sports FC 24
- Minecraft: Deluxe Collection
- Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice
Look a little further beyond the top 10, and the likes of Neptunia: Sisters VS Sisters, Irem Collection Volume 1, Pocky & Rocky Reshrined, Glorious Savior and Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom are all within the top 25.
It's definitely a unique lineup of titles, and there are plenty here that we haven't had any experience with! That includes Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord, which is a 3D remake of a 1981 RPG from the Apple II days.
Let us know your thoughts on this list below, and we've added links in case you want to check any of these games out!

About 60-70% through Unicorn Overlord at the moment and it’s actually so awesome. Very addictive.
How, and I mean this I the most courteous way possible, THE HELL, did I miss that there was a Wizardry remake?!
Glad to see Persona 4 up there. Still one of the best JRPGs of all time.
More games like unicorn overlord please!
Not surprised that this is what the list looks like, but it is still interesting to actually see it. Nice that Xbox is getting games like Unicorn Overlord and Neptunia at all, it definitely helps Japanese Xbox fans get to play more of what they like on their preferred platform.
Unicorn overlord is a very fun game
So I clicked on PuzzMix and thought, Oooh! I quite like those simple drop match and combine games... So I googled PuzzMix and saw a comment about a game called Suika Game (Watermelon Game in the UK on the Switch), which apparently is very popular and which PuzzMix is a basic clone of. I'm now thinking of giving Watermelon Game a go 🤣🤣 I am easily led 🤣
Wizardry is a fantastic modern remake and shouldn’t be ignored if you enjoy those kind of games.
Where is @xboxjapanfan? 😉
I don't know if I wrote it correctly.
It's interesting indeed seeing what Xbox fans there like and I often wonder how many of them are Japanese and how many are not.
Note: I like many Japanese games.
@RetroMan71 Enjoy your melons 🍉
@InterceptorAlpha I don’t think a game flew under the radar more than this… any lower and it would be tunneling like Dig Dug….
@AlwaysPlaying I would like more coverage of minor titles on sites like this.
I'm here.
As you can see from the inclusion of Wizardry, the Japanese fans of Xbox seem to be of an older age group.
Bought Wizardry and was excited to try it, but man, it's absolutely, 100% not for me... I don't know what I was expecting, but all you do ist walk a few steps, fight and then die. I detest round based combat (and random encounters) anyways, but I thought the modern enhancement could soften the blow. They don't.
@Echtzeit yeah you went in blind - but huge thanks for your review and your sacrifice…
I mean games that are being play tested pre-release are ranking in the top 30 most played. Don’t think there are that many players in japan on xbox
I’m not Japanese but I’ve been enjoying wizardry a lot!
@Banjo- Same here, there are some hidden gems out there in the gaming library. I'm pretty sure if we search hard enough, there is a website dedicated to them.
@RetroMan71 Right. On the other hand, we get dozens of articles about the same games with very little new information. There are many games that are worth checking out and are not covered at all, so we don't know that they exist or that they have been released for Xbox.
@xboxjapanfan It's good to have your point of view here because of Xbox not being popular in Japan. Are you Japanese or just live in Japan, if you don't mind the question?
@Banjo- Haha, thanks.
I am Japanese and live in Japan.
@xboxjapanfan Cool! I want to go there at least once and see the culture myself and try the genuine Japanese food. 😁
