It's finally official - the new Test Drive Unlimited is coming to Xbox this September! Yep, after a recent teaser for a 'major announcement', the team has done just that - confirming that Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown will launch for Xbox Series X and S on September 12th, 2024.
If you're as excited to jump into this open-world racer as we are, you can actually go hands-on with the game a fair while earlier than that date. Nacon is opening up access for certain pre-order editions on September 5th - a full week earlier than the standard release date.
"Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown is a lifestyle and social experience that redefines the standards of open-world racing games. Alone or with friends, explore Hong Kong Island, accurately reproduced at 1:1 scale. Collect exceptional cars from dealerships, customize them in workshops, and showcase your style to reach the elite of the competition."
If you've been following this game for a while, you'll know that a solid release date has been a long, long time coming. In fact, Nacon first introduced Solar Crown to the world way back in July 2020, so we're talking a full four-year marketing cycle before this thing actually hits the streets.
For now, we're trying to keep our hype levels in-check, but we're hopeful that after numerous delays — and a couple of great WRC releases in the meantime — developer KT Racing can bring back the good times with Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown.
Well, how are we feeling about TDU: Solar Crown right now? Tell us if you're picking this one up down below!

Fingers crossed it lives up to the memories of Test Drive Unlimited 1 and 2 on the 360 - a mate and I put so many hours into those, particularly the first.
My fear now is Forza Horizon does everything they did but bigger and better - only thing I can think of FH5 doesn't offer is walking around the house you bought, and walking around the showroom with all the cars in it rather than just one at a time.
If Test Drive can keep that distinction, plus some of the other bits that made it so cool back then - and be a fun, scenic drive - then I'll bite
@Widey85 The first game on 360 was amazing for its time, I'm still gutted they closed the servers so soon.
Solar Crown just needs that bit of TDU personality, I think. I can forgive a bit of jank if it retains the house buying, car showroom browsing and all that. Very much looking forward to seeing how it all comes together!
So hyped and yet so worried for this. This looks precisely like the type of MMO I can get lost in (a sentence I have never said before), and its Test Drive. But I feel this game could live or die by it's ambition. Looks like the type of game where if it fails, it will be a cataclysmic disaster. I'm in on the concept though and pray it comes off for KT and Nacon. It will be a day 1 purchase. See you guys in Hong Kong!
Looks cool! I'm a bit of a sucker for open world racing games, great time wasters. Just throw on some music and drive around for a bit, it's honestly pretty relaxing in a weird way. Just wish it didn't have an always online requirement though (RIP The Crew)...
Hello there fellow gamers.
Seems I´m not the only one with very fond memories of the original Test Drive Unlimited on Xbox 360.
That game paved the way to games like Forza Horizon and The Crew franchises.
I loved exploring the Island of Oahu with both cars and bikes.
The game was just fun and chill.
Hopefully TDU Solar Cown has the same spark and the same style the original had. We´ll see.
Cheers everyone and happy gaming
Hopefully but "lifestyle and social experience" sets all manner of alarm bells ringing.
@scarecrowknife To be fair that was the vibe of the older games as well, especially 2. Personally I'd like them to follow the first game's blueprint more, but tbh, I'll take any TDU at this point!
I'm very cautious about this one, considering who's making it. I'll reserve full judgement until after launch.
I can't wait! What a year for games!
Mandatory persistent internet connection means a hard pass from me.
If I can’t play a game from beginning to end from a disc and without the internet or mandatory updates I simply won’t buy it.
@TheOfflineGamer it is technically an MMO though. Just saying
@OM1993 one that could function perfectly well without the bs social features but has a built in expiration date because greed.
