The big May 2024 update for Starfield is officially out now on Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S (along with PC), and one of its most notable new features is a set of performance mode options for Series X owners.
Thanks to this, you can now play Starfield at 30FPS or 60FPS on Xbox Series X using a standard display. If your TV or monitor is VRR-enabled, you can go one step further by accessing 40FPS and an uncapped frame option rate as well.
In the video above, we've just focused on the 30FPS and 60FPS performance modes, giving you a chance to view them side-by-side and spot the differences between the two. The 60FPS mode naturally lacks a bit of detail compared to the 30FPS version, so you'll need to make the choice of whether you prefer better visuals or a higher frame rate.
As mentioned by the folks over at Digital Foundry, the 60FPS mode works pretty well here, aside from in busy situations such as in the cities of Akila and New Atlantis where the frame rate can drop quite significantly at times.
DF: "The good news is that this mode is indeed capable of achieving 60fps in a range of content."
"The major asterisk here is performance in big cities like Akila and New Atlantis, which run much more poorly than the rest of the game. We're typically in the 30s and 40s here, with some larger repeatable hitches in certain areas."
Keep in mind that Bethesda doesn't necessarily recommend using the 60FPS option if you don't have a VRR-enabled display, as screen tearing is possible when playing the game this way. VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) is a feature that helps to alleviate this and provide a smoother experience, hence the additional FPS options in this update.
DF: "Playing the performance mode at 60fps with VRR enabled at 120Hz output feels like a good sweet spot to me that provides the most consistent and most smooth overall experience, though I could see an argument for most of the other visual options available here."
It's still early days, but so far it's looking like a positive start for Starfield's latest update on Xbox Series X!
What do you make of the Starfield 60FPS mode so far? Let us know down in the comments below.

Nice. Anxious to give this a try!
Well?
So... it's kinda, sorta, not really, 60 fps unless have the correct television. I can already hear the 60 fps angel eyed immortals complaining still not able play the game to due getting headaches.
Lucky doesn't matter to me as I am just a mere mortal and 30 fps for this game is just perfect. But really need to upgrade my TV sometime since still running my KS 9000 Samsung. The Series S of 4k televisions.
Awesome. As expected, the shooting sections benefit the most. However, I expect the 60 fps mode to be ironed out a bit more with a new patch. It's nice that they are still improving this and older Xbox games. I'll play the 40fps mode on my C1 (OLED VRR).
That 60-30(ish) drop in cities is probably a bit too rough for me, though the 40FPS option should be less so.. another excuse... I mean justification to by a new display with VRR
60fps with VRR and 120hz it is then. I always just leave LFC on and I don't really see a reason to disable it here either.
I had a suspicion this would be the best way to play it on console.
i find it pretty good at 60 fps but motion blur on seems better for me. depth of field and film grain off.
I’ll give this a try when released on PlayStation. It’s sounding more and more like pretty much every Xbox exclusive will be going multiplat. “No red line”

Xss exists...
Starfield patch ignores it...
Xss fears for it's existence...
@InterceptorAlpha
That’s the way I set 60fps and with Starfield now.
Always works perfect for me and my TV.
@lacerz Jez already said it’s been taken out of context.
It’s like night and day. This is how the game should have launched.
Seems like it keeps 60fps most of the time other than those large cities. I’ll try sticking to graphics mode at 60fps, I think with my VRR set it should look fine. Worst case I put it on performance mode.
well they did say VRR would be required for anything over 30fps as in the 'big' cities, it won't hold the 40/60 fps line...
But at least they give us options and also shows what PC gamers and DF rightly assessed, its more CPU limited in a 16.67ms frame window...
I do like this approach that Bethesda is taking with the Modes.
Sure, there might be a little too "PC-like" compared to Performance/Visuals Mode, but it does future-proof the game as Microsoft's next system will probably be able to run the Visuals Mode at 60+fps all the time.
I kind of hope this becomes a standard going forward if games continue to have different performance/visual profiles for games.
Plus, as a tech head, it provides a good benchmark of the hardware's capabilities with the game. Apparently, the game gets pretty high FPS in the Unlocked + 120 Mode when it's not CPU bound by cities.
In this comparison why do some scenes in 30fps look soft/blurry compared to 60fps? All the scenes look sharp and clear in 60 fps. The combat in space scene in 30fps looks like a blur filter is used while 60fps is clear and sharp.
i like the 40fps modes you get double the frame time benefits for only 33% more frames. so visuals take way less of a hit that the performance modes
Looking forward to this running better on PS5
@InterceptorAlpha - I think that will be my preferred choice too. Do you know if setting to 120hz but running at 60fps makes any difference? (I generally leave my Sony OLED at 60) - I appreciate the 40fps mode won’t work unless the setting is 120hz but I don’t want to use that option.
Anyway, delighted there is now a 60fps mode and already enjoying an enormous upgrade. Glad I went for a VRR Tv too. Happy Days!
I did try 40fps on visuals last night which was a big improvement but decided to boost this to 60fps on visuals and seemed pretty stable, it does drop in big built up area’s but VRR seemed to iron things out pretty well and it does look beautiful when opting the visual mode at a higher frame rate. Definitely closer to what we hoped Starfield would have been at launch, I really struggle to play at 30fps but having the best of both has certainly caught my interest in giving this another go.
@GamingFan4Lyf Completely agree. Next upgraded Xbox hardware should be able to improve the performance more easily with no patches with these options.
I also feel it gives a little more options/overhead for mods, which will take up additional resources. So even the performance 30fps option, which is pretty useless now, may have a use for very heavy mods in future.
Smart decision even if current performance is a bit iffy.
The game should of worked at launch I played the whole game and the last mission glitches on me and breaks the game so I can't complete it don't think I'll go back to this no matter what they do to it there's so many other better games to play that don't waste hours of your life over bugs
@Doomcrow
I see the twitter poster 'better on ps' has arrived on purexbox
I started Starfield at launch on Series X and made it to level 25. Then I took a break to focus on other games like Final Fantasy 16 and then Rebirth with a sprinkling of other titles. Yesterday I updated Starfield and decided to see what it looks like on my new LG OLED set to 120htz. Very good so far, but I feel like I should start over since I forgot so much already.
@themightyant "Smart decision even if current performance is a bit iffy."
Not really sure Bethesda can do much else with performance in cities unless it wants to completely strip them of all but the "important" NPCs and leave them looking almost completely lifeless.
Though Digital Foundry did note that the supposed culling of city crowds in Performance Mode didn't seem to happen as crowd density looked the same.
Perhaps, in complete Bethesda fashion, there is a bug in the patch with regards to reducing crowd density in Performance Mode.
I started playing Starfield again last week in anticipation of the new update. I've got over 100 hours with the game and I can honestly say this new update is a game changer! The 60fps performance mode on Xbox Series X is so much better than I had anticipated. I honestly expected something similar to what we got with Fallout 4 but damn I couldn't have been more wrong! Starfield is now smooth as butter, I've yet to see a dramatic drop in resolution even when fighting a bunch of enemies & the only issues I've seen so far is the occasional hiccup which again isn't as bad as I expected it to be. Aside from the performance of the game, the quality of life improvements are staggering. The updated maps actually make the game far more accessible & it adds much needed depth to actually find places you may have skipped over with the old maps. Finally the biggest and best update for me is changes to gameplay, I have made it to where my character can carry a substantial amount of stuff without becoming encumbered. Even though this does -6xp I negated that drop by making ground enemies slightly harder.
Overall Starfield is much more fun to play. The game looks great, 60fps is smooth as butter & the quality of life updates make it a game worth investing time into. Starfield is a game with so much to do, explore and kill. The main quests are amazing and the side quests are just as good if not better! If you haven't given the game a shot and you enjoy Bethesda style RPGs then I definitely recommend it!
Happy gaming ✌️
@Banjo- same here.
