Digital Foundry has just dropped another look at Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora - this time focusing on the console versions and how each of them perform across a variety of modes. On Xbox Series X and PS5 we have both a 30FPS and a 60FPS mode, whereas Xbox Series S has just one 30FPS option.
On the whole, it looks like Ubisoft's new open world adventure fares pretty well - it's certainly not one of those cases where it needed way more time in the oven before release. However, the game's vast open world does struggle a bit at 60FPS - but VRR seems to save the day here.

When the higher-end consoles drop under 60FPS, frame rate dips and screen tearing are visible. However, VRR smooths most of that out on Xbox Series X - and it's recommended that you use the tech if you want to play this one in the performance mode. It's only available on certain displays though, so if you want to read up on VRR itself and what it does, Digital Foundry also provided a closer look at that last year.
As for Xbox Series S users, the choice is made for you - only one 30FPS mode is present at launch. The good news is that it's largely stable on all consoles and looks like a great way to play Frontiers of Pandora - if you can stomach the lower frame rate.
Oh, and we asked you all yesterday if you'd been playing the new Avatar yet, so if you want to contribute to our recent poll on the new title, check out the article down below!

I own the game on my Series X, but with Christmas fast approaching I have decided to play it in the New Year. I hate putting a game down for several days, or a week, and then trying to get back into it, and remember all that has gone on up until the point I put it down.
Added to which, you never know, there might even be an update before I get to it... 😜
VRR is seeming more and more important as this generation goes on. Glad I splurged on the TV I bought for my X before launch to have VRR.
Well at least this Ubisoft turd is finely polished ha!
@eire-shabba a take as vital and fresh as the show your profile pic comes from
@Drnsnsr You my sir have just shamed me I hope you know this means we are enemies now not a good look bad show!!!
@CharlieChooChoo I'm just tired of Ubisoft open world games they are just boring samey games every one of them
The biggest takeaway for me is how well the Series S is doing (people's favourite bashing console).
Yes, it achieved it with the necessary cutbacks but still looking great and it seems that in the hands of capable developers, coupled with current gen only engines the Series S will.do just as intended 👍.
VRR as a crutch is what concerns me. They should make it so the game has a stable frame rate in the performance mode, not hope that anyone has a brand new display to fix the game's issues.
I'm tempted to sub to Ubisoft plus for a month to play this.
@SodaPop6548 My TV is is going on 5 years old and has HDMI 2.1 with 4K120 support and VRR. My PC monitor is even older. Definitely not a "new TV" kind of thing.
As i said since the beginning, 1440p pc monitor with vrr is the best companion for a console not a tv.
