Let's kick this Monday off with a bang! Square Enix has subtly announced that a new Dragon Quest game is coming to Xbox Series X|S, and it carries the "HD-2D" banner that was previously fitted to the Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake.
That game had never been confirmed for Xbox before today, so it's great to see Square Enix confirming it for Microsoft's two latest consoles. That said, the teaser doesn't actually mention Dragon Quest 3 by name, leading to speculation about what else might be in the pipeline for the franchise in the near future:
Today marks "Dragon Quest Day", which means there may be more Xbox-related reveals to share in the coming hours (we'll let you know if so), and there's some speculation that a whole trilogy of remakes could be on the cards.
That would obviously be the best case scenario, but don't get your hopes up too much! Even if there's nothing more, it's great to see that Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake is getting the Xbox treatment - we just need a release date now!
Excited for this? Let us know down in the comments section below.

I've never played a Dragon Quest game
Surprising it doesnt have a ps4 version given how many players still there when it also made for switch power wise. Did xbox pay a gamepass bag to get the game of what?
A Dragon Quest trailer without the orchestral theme... must be fake. lol /jk
@Rmg0731 Probably as much as Sony paid for the PS5 version.
I take it you haven't kept up with the news that Square Enix are now Multi Format only, I suspect that will not include PS4 or Xbox One going forward.
Didn't think this would be getting an Xbox version initially, but last time I thought about this remake was before Square Enix emphasized further support for Xbox, and then months later emphasized a strong multi platform push in general. Nice! While admittedly I've grown tired of this "HD-2D" style, I know many really love it and Dragon Quest 3 is a brilliant game, so it's great that more people get to play it now.
I wonder with the longer than expected development time, and this clip not mentioning 3 at all if it could be possible they are releasing the entire first trilogy. The first two titles are significantly smaller so it might not be that farfetched (one can at least hope).
I always have a sense of missing something when numbered entries are rereleased out of order. I get that each is stand alone but this has stopped me in the past.
Let's see if Square Enix sticks to their promise of multiplatform titles.
I doubt they will.
This is great news! Hopefully it’s the start of seeing more of the HD2D games on Xbox. Triangle Strategy, Tactics Ogre, Octopath 2, & Live A Live need to hit Xbox.
I'm glad that the third-party exclusives are over! Square Enix was the last big company making these Xbox exclusions deals with Sony and finally we can leave all that behind and enjoy their new and old games on Xbox. The Dragon Quest remakes and the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster collection are the ones I'm more excited about. Bring them on!
@BBB some people still enjoy the classics and would love to have them on their console of choice with a fresh coat of paint. Why hate on that? Plenty of new stuff releases each and every year.
@undarlegt At least, three years in development and the engine was created years earlier for Octopath Traveller. A trilogy on the same updated engine seems likely. The teaser reads, "Dragon Quest HD-2D: The legacy begins." That means more than "III", right?
@FarmDog08 Moreover, Dragon Quest has never been available on Xbox before, only XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age - Definitive Edition, Builders 2 and Infinity Strash.
@Vipor007 if you're into JRPGs, I honestly believe they are up there as the best, but they're not for everyone. The last Dragon Quest game was brilliant, and I always recommend it if it comes on sale!
If there are any games that deserve to be remade, it's Dragon Quest 1 & 2. I've recently started playing DQ1 on NES and man it's rough. Not even talking graphics, but weird difficulty spikes and outdated, hardcore gameplay mechanices (like having to travel all the way back to the castle to save your game, and losing half your gold if you die because of said weird difficulty spikes).
I realize they got "remasters" of sorts with new artwork on Switch, but from what I understand they kept the core gameplay mechanics and they're just as brutal as the originals.
@purexbox this game was announced a few years ago not today. Few years ago, they announced this but no release date or anything.
@Banjo- tbh, I don’t think Square will make any more deals with Sony regarding exclusivity due to sales of FF 16 and Rebirth (which is probably because of Square’s ridiculous standards).
But they probably will make more deals with Nintendo though.
@anoyonmus The news in this case is that the trailer reads "Dragon Quest HD-2D: The legacy begins" and that means more than "III", in my opinion. So today, they not just confirmed the platforms Xbox, Windows, PS5 and Switch, but also teased that it's not "III" but "the legacy", like the series creator teased in 2021:

This is great news, for sure. I guess they are talking about III, announced before. But, who knows it's the whole Erdrick Trilogy now.
@Banjo- that… had nothing to do with what I said.
@anoyonmus It has.

Pretty wild to see this kind of announcement for Xbox. Never thought I'd see the day.
@Banjo- ok
Well we don’t know what this is. It doesn’t explicitly say 3. I’m glad either way! Much rather play DQ3 on Xbox than Switch.
And if it’s 1-3, all the better. Day 1 if it’s on Xbox. (Or even if it’s not probably)
Where’s FF Pixel Remasters? Preferably on game pass… $75 is nuts.
DQ3 is the first DQ game chronologically, so maybe that’s why it’s saying the legacy begins…
Again, happy either way!
Se finally drop ps exclusive.
But where is OT2?
And give xbox SO2
@Nicstockes I wonder if they'll treat Octopath Traveler 2 like they did Final Fantasy 14?. So hopefully we will find out during the Xbox showcase. So maybe a shadow drop or within a few weeks after.
A sukioden remake would be nice. "I'm Sholtenhein Reinback the 3rd"
well i'll add it to the list then.
My experience with DQ has been a bit mixed, haven't played many, remember playing DQ8 on ps2 and actually having a pretty good time. Then, last year I played 7 on 3DS and despite being based on a really cool concept, I just found it increadibly tedious to play, so it's been added to the very short list of rpg games that I have left uncompleted in my life (I think there's only like 3 games in that list!) I couldn't get myself to complete it. So, it's good if it's coming out on Xbox, but unsure of whether I'll play it or not.
So it seems like Square Enix is indeed keeping their multiplatform promises.
@jesse_dylan Game Pass deals depend on the price. I think that we will have Octopath Traveller II on Game Pass at launch because it will be on Xbox over one year later and the first one was on Game Pass the day it was released for Xbox. Since the Pixel Remaster collection was released in 2021-2022, it wouldn't surprise me to see the games added to Game Pass as well, as it would mean new money. I'm happy as long as they are available on Xbox!
You make a good point about Dragon Quest III being the first game chronologically, but the series creator teased remakes of I and II in 2021, after the remake of III was revealed.

Fingers crossed.
