There have already been some signs a new DOOM game could be appearing at this year's Xbox Games Showcase and a new "exclusive" has now independently verified this while also providing some new information about the title.
According to Insider Gaming's Tom Henderson, the final name of the new entry is believed to be 'DOOM: The Dark Ages'. It has supposedly been in development for "at least four years" now and could potentially be 'medieval inspired':
"Last year, I heard of early details of the next entry into the DOOM franchise, which was described to me as a ‘medieval inspired doom world’. While that doesn’t necessarily give much information to go on, ‘year zero’, ‘the dark ages’, and ‘medieval inspired’ starts to paint a vivid picture of where the series could be going next. Perhaps we’ll be taking more of an early look at the Doomslayer’s life during the medieval times? A prequel of sorts?"
Adding to this latest update is a comment from podcaster 'NateTheHate' who claims this new DOOM title will also be a multiplatform release, further stating "Yes; it's coming to PlayStation 5". Windows Central's Jez Corden has corroborated this, while also confirming it will be coming to "Xbox Game Pass as well".
"I can also confirm Nate's report that DOOM: The Dark Ages is slated for PlayStation as well... And you can expect DOOM: The Dark Ages to join other DOOM games on Xbox Game Pass"
This latest update about this rumoured DOOM title follows on from a leak, a new Bethesda trademark, and also a report from The Verge's Tom Warren, where he teased a new DOOM announcement. The Xbox Games Showcase is scheduled to take place on 9th June 2024.
How would you feel about a new DOOM game reveal at the Xbox Showcase? Let us know in the comments.

Not a Doom guy but I like medieval stuff.
The prior Dooms are on PlayStation, why shouldn't be this one as well?
The media shouldn't try to make an issue where there are none.
@Gamer_X The previous Hellblade was on PlayStation, why not Hellblade 2?
I mean, it’s kinda noteworthy here, given MS owns Bethesda…
Looks like PlayStation will be my main console next gen
@dskatter Obviously you don't see the huge difference between Hellblade Vs Doom which is the size of Call of Duty in popularity.
And then you ask why shouldn't it be on PlayStation?
You must work for the media creating issues where there none.
@StylesT
Well why pretend it's not already....
@Gamer_X Doom is the size of Call of Duty in popularity?
@Gamer_X Probably because I get most games on Xbox and have hundreds of digital games there as opposed to ps..and I ideally would prefer to stay with Xbox...but the way things are going there will be no point in having both consoles as I will be able to get all games on just one
Surely this isn't right, Phil Spencer said they acquired Zenimax to bring high quality exclusives to Xbox.
this will be the last xbox i buy if i can play all the games on PlayStation i might as well have one of those instead
Isn't medieval doom just quake?
@Jenkinss You'll get an Xbox console exclusive port of the hit mobile companion game Doom: Keep Defender though, day 1 on game pass. Totally worth it.
@NEStalgia Or Hexen/Heretic.. Doom eternal had already some references to those games. Now they own the ip, there could be a integrated story with Dsparil, Korax as enemies.
@StylesT it should be your main from now on. Especially with soon to be released PS5 Pro
Hey, I’ll be happy enough to play this on GamePass while PlayStation folks fork out $70 at release. That’s why I’ll be sticking with Xbox as my main console regardless of a game is “exclusive” or not.
@awp69 "Hey, I’ll be happy enough to play this on GamePass while PlayStation folks fork out $70 at release"
And that's the problem Microsoft has created for itself, they have trained Xbox owners that you must not pay for games and must wait to get them for free. Why would Sony port Helldivers 2 to Xbox when people are going to be asking for it to be free 😐
@Tecinthehead "Why would Sony port Helldivers 2 to Xbox when people are going to be asking for it to be free 😐"
Exactly this.
@Tecinthehead
"Why would Sony port Helldivers 2 to Xbox when people are going to be asking for it to be free"
Because it isn't free, you pay for Gamepass and Microsoft pay for the game, it really isn't difficult to understand.
Here’s my sort of mature outlook on this for a change for me 🤣
Well they might as well get more money for producing the game that will definitely sell well on PS5, probably be a switch 2 version further down the line.
I own all three consoles so I don’t really mind.
I have game pass so I get it day one with my subscription and I think releasing on other platforms will help game pass keep getting those games day one due to the returns on investment releasing on PS5 and maybe switch 2 as well.
I know Sony make money selling consoles and it’s different for them to keep their exclusives tight to their console base.
One day in future we might see all games all consoles, but I definitely can’t see Nintendo doing it.
A doom on current generation consoles only hopefully, should be amazing, I can’t wait.
Really enjoyed doom eternal.
@Jenkinss @dskatter ever since they bought Bethesda there's been mixed messaging but there had been suggestions that some games wouldn't be exclusive and Doom is an obvious candidate to keep multiplatform.
Spencer did mention that “even in the future there might be things that have contractual things, or legacy on different platforms that we’ll go do,”
There's also other quotes where he says "some games will be exclusive" when referring to the acquisition
Game Pass is grand, but I found that after a short while it got stale for me. The games appearing more often than not for me, so now I buy the games I want to play and the days of scrolling through game pass and not finding/fancying a game are gone. I know others like me are out there. Maybe just not here.
LOL, Microsoft is continuing to destroy and devalue Xbox. Why even bother at this point? Doom should be a CONSOLE SELLER, just like Playstation has GoW. I'm really starting to regret switching to Xbox this gen...
I can also confirm Nate's report that DOOM: The Dark Ages is slated for PlayStation as well
Good, the previous games were multiplatform so nothing changes (here) and I hope they'll consider Hellblade 2 as well. Just don't understand why this is treated as some tragedy every time....
Quite frankly I don't care if it's on ps too , my main console is Xbox and I'm not going to kick off if they put some games on ps ,I'm hoping that we as Xbox users will benefit from this like from the money they will make goes back in to more games for Xbox and even some exclusives
Oh before ppl say I wait for game pass blah blah I by games as well as pay for game pass I have a really big library and I'll b honest a lot of games I've brought and they then appeared on gp ...eg I got immortals of aveum in January I think I knew it was going to game pass /ea eventually but still paid for it
Im sure this will be technical 'tour de force' as ID are very competent devs and know how to push hardware. They will not fob us off with a 30fps only title, thats for sure!
It IS big news that this will be announced day and date for PS5. Given recent events, speculation and rumours, people are looking for tangible evidence of MS games release stratagey, and so this is important to many. As long as this is on GP, xbox players still have great reason to be happy, but it does make sense to me that this is released on the larger market of PS5 to bring in the £s the corp is looking for.
I understand the disquite that some have as they expected the acquisitions to produce exclusives, but I think its clear that policy has changed. As long as title remain launching on GP, Xbox is still the clever place to consume these titles.
Doom is too fast paced for my old reflexes these days. But it's a stalwart of the game industry from fantastic devs, so Im very keen to see how they have evolved it...
@StylesT already has for me, just in the last few months. I still have my Xboxes, but I’m buying all my games on PS going forward. Won’t be a need for an Xbox in the near future. Shame, I’ve always owned an Xbox.
I feel sad that this got leaked. Did Tom Henderson really need to drop this? It's destroyed all the fun of finding out at the showcase.
Another huge release coming for xbox. They have a fantastic lineup and we haven't even seen the full summer showcase yet. In my opinion they are now the top publisher in the industry.
@Weapon_Wheel
I don't understand. Why does non-exclusivity devalue Xbox?
Indeed, especially with titles that were multiplatform.
Whatever Microsoft does it just can't please people. They aquire two big publishers - everyone's up in arms, they follow a case by case multiplatform strategy (as stated multiple times) and as above everyone's pitchforks at the ready 😅.
It's a perpetual groundhog day here on PX...
@Weapon_Wheel Why isn't Playstation (Sony) doing the same then? They have locked Final Fantasy as an exclusive, not to mention other games that were perfect candidates for Xbox too. Didn't Phil say that by purchasing Zenimax, Xbox would get incredible "EXCLUSIVES"? Only and only IF Sony decides to port PS games to Xbox, then your argument will make sense.
@UndyingInsurgent95
Why isn't Playstation (Sony) doing the same then?
Perhaps because they don't own BethSoft and ABK, and their gaming business strategy might be different to Microsoft’s? They can coexist without following the same principles, and personally I'm totally fine with that.
@StylesT I used to buy all my multiplatform games on Xbox. Starting with all Dragon’s Dogma 2, I buy them now for PS5.
Not really clear to me how Xbox will look a few years for now.
@Sol4ris The big difference is Sony are locking down '3rd' party titles they are only the publisher, Sony are in a very difficult situation right now where the ever increasing cost of development vs low Profit on big AAA First Party titles is hitting them hard.
You would think they would be happy to get those '3rd' party games over to Xbox if Microsoft is willing to give some AAA First Party titles to their system, but that's Sony for you.
@Tecinthehead
I see you’re a fan of sacred symbols and Colin Moriarty! Xbox gamers aren’t « trained » not to buy games! It’s just that across all of the big AAA releases + our favorite live service games + Gamepass, Xbox gamers don’t have TIME to play anything else, hence why they don’t buy as much games A La Carte…why would Xbox train people not to buy games anyway?!
@Ver I agree, and you just know if Sony were the ones giving day One titles on their (not good value for money) PS Premium they would be posting how great Sony are.
what the..... where's quake 4 remake and quake 5?
Jez Corden, are you saying that the next Doom is coming to Game Pass at launch?! I would have never guess that! What would the world do without you?
Seriously, Doom Eternal is the best modern shooter in my opinion, so looking forward to the next one.
@carlos82 @Gamer_X Exactly. Pretending that it isn’t surprising that a MS-bought existing property doesn’t end up being exclusive is disingenuous at best. As someone who has been a PS guy since day one and just recently dipped their toes into the Series X as their first Xbox, I’m happy to see games hit both sides. (Though I’ll mostly buy those games on PS for consistency’s sake except when discounts are involved. I AM still primarily a PlayStation guy! )
Now MS just needs to step up the game a bit if they’re going to do exclusives at all going forward. Hellblade 2 is a good start, I have 1 for PS and just replayed the first one on Gamepass as well.
@UndyingInsurgent95 The good news is that Sony will also be releasing their games on other platforms, at least Windows because they don't sell as many copies as needed and that Square Enix no longer wants to develop exclusives for Playstation and will bring the temporary exclusives to other platforms, including Xbox.
@JoyfulFire You are completely right. The saddest thing is that all these users will be complaining about the show after it airs because there were no surprises, as if Microsoft was to blame for the leaks. It makes you consider not visiting gaming sites for two weeks to avoid the spoilers.
@Titntin
I think like an x Xbox worker said.
They either need go all in exclusive and start advertising that and sell consoles and game pass.
Or almost go all in with Multiplatform.
There maybe a happy medium but I’m not sure what really.
@Banjo- It's an odd thing, I didn't buy my SX for gamepass, I wanted to build a fun library that was " in theory" only on Xbox. So with all these recent happenings at MS I have not bought anything for Xbox because I'm very concerned it's just going to PS eventually as well,.
With GP fans I think this is not any concern, they don't "buy" the games anyways. The investment risk is minimal because " They might think they don't actually own anything anyways"
@CallMeDuraSouka Most Xbox users still buy games as proven by the official reports, even those that are subscribed to Game Pass. I admit that it's a odd not knowing what games will be on PS5 (and Switch 2) and what games will be not (except Call of Duty for obvious reasons), but Microsoft said "on a case-by-case basis" since they acquired Zenimax. Does the uncertainty benefit Xbox? Probably. We know that Sony will be porting their games to Windows just like Xbox, so that makes PC the most complete gaming platform, although I'll stay on Xbox because I'm not a fan of what Sony is doing since PS4 and I love the Xbox hardware, controller and features.
@Banjo- I'm basically PC these days but will keep the Series X as it's a great addition to it, with cross buy and save data shared between many games and the console is way better for my young son to play on the PS5 was, which had pretty terrible parental controls
@carlos82 That's a solid choice.
@Sifi
The big difference is Sony are locking down '3rd' party titles they are only the publisher
And that approach clearly gives their fanbase constant elation😅. Somehow people feel empowerment that gamers without a PS5 cannot enjoy said games🤷♂️.
Weird as this may sound I don't want Microsoft to follow with perpetual third-party exclusive deals like Sony does.
@Tecinthehead I buy plenty of games. It’s just first party games I know I can play for free. I bought three games this week.
I already have Helldivers 2 on PS5. But if I didn’t own a PlayStation, I definitely would have bought it on Xbox if ported.
@StylesT Agreed. The whole reason I own a PC, Xbox, Playstation, and Switch is because of their exclusives.
Why would I bother a spending money on hardware if all the software can be used elsewhere?
@Sol4ris The thing is, both Sony and MS have been doing third party deals for along time. Maybe MS don't do it on the same scale as Sony, bit they both still follow the same practices.
@Gamer_X
Phil Spencer said buying Zenimax was about giving people exclusive games wherever Game Pass exists.
So far, what exclusive games have Xbox owners gotten from this deal? They even took away Hi-Fi Rush, I'm guessing Starfield is next.
Anyone who thinks the next Elder Scrolls, Fallout or Outer Worlds will be exclusive are crazy too. They've owned Obsidian for years now as well, and still 0 exclusives from them as well.
Not sure why they wouldn't just reboot Quake as everything seemed to point to...but yeah I'll take anything Doom and be happy with it, I'm just curious and unsure about the direction they're gonna take it in after TAG2's ending seemed like a send-off for the Slayer and the series for the time being.
Really hope this is true. Should be something pretty special.
Give me proper Doom this time. Plenty of Ammo laying around all the time, weapons galore and not running out of ammo or being forced to go melee like Doom Eternal. That was just annoying
The reason Microsoft are going all in multiplatform is because of Sony's arm-twisting over the ABK deal. They were ready to go the same route as Sony have with their exclusives, a year or two of exclusivity followed by optional multiplatform release, but Sony pretty much forced the courts to demand Microsoft give away as much of their exclusivity as possible, while Sony continues unchecked.
The slow failure of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake games is a symptom of Sony's true strategy, where ALL games are on Playstation, and a Playstation Exclusive is a Playstation Exclusive, and anyone else's 'exclusives' must come to Playstation to be 'successful'.
Square Enix's recent 'change in strategy' shows they've jumped off Sony's Jim Ryan helmed ship, and realised Sony is consolidating the market around themselves, preparing to get Nintendo to be their handheld division while Microsoft slowly die.
With the new hardware coming out soon we’ll be saying why should anyone buy a PS when you play PS games on my Surface handheld
That’s fine doom isn’t a halo or gears born Xbox game so it can go on PlayStation
@ValentineMeikin I don’t mind games like doom but If Phil think multiplat is the answer he is wrong because how will he be able to compete with steam ? Xbox games barely chart alone on steam and steam has good discounts / deals
I have no issues with it being multiplatform since it always has been
I know there is a precedent for existing franchises staying multiplat, but I always thought that strategy wasn't a good way to keep selling consoles.
I'm hopeful it will be a good game, though. The premise is interesting, sounds almost like Quake?
@IronMan30 @TheSimulator Which is why Sony's caveats for the ABK deal to go through as it did was so bad for Microsoft. Microsoft were going to say 'Call Of Duty stays multiplat, everything else depends on us'.
Sony, despite having a massive market lead, pretty much forced Microsoft to add far more games to their multiplatform strategy than would make their purchase of ABK profitable, while Sony continue to bully publishers into very lopsided exclusivity deals, pretending that there's a chance in hell of Microsoft getting anything.
I have them all and play them all my time matters my years invested should also.
Wow! 66 comments and 57 of them are discussing console wars, not the game in question.
Honestly, this juvenile bickering is so incredibly tiring. Genuinely interested to see what people .are of a medieval themed Doom, but good grief!
I'm thoroughly looking forward to this, loved Heretic/Hexen. What ID will do with the Medieval theme has me quite excited. At the very least it's going to look utterly amazing.
@ValentineMeikin
The only concession MS made to Sony as a result of the ABK deal and court case was COD
The year 2024 and people are still obsessing about exclusives. As if a game is somehow more enjoyable if other people can’t play it.
And the fact that they sold their cloud gaming service...
Call Of Duty was always going to be multiplatform, they were promising day 1 parity releases for at least the next 10 years.
There were a lot of other smaller concessions that are much less talked about, with the regulators using the 'issues' Sony raised to stick it to what Sony portrayed as a monolithic competitor that had acquired one too many studios.
I liken it to David and Goliath, except in this case, Goliath managed to persuade the audience to let them dictate the terms of their fight with David, thinking that they could force Microsoft to lose money and ABK. Microsoft managed to get the extension, and managed to get the win.
@ValentineMeikin
Exactly. All they gave away was COD which they were always going to do and Cloud Gaming which was small beer. They didn’t have to give anything else.
I love doom but hated the platforming in eternal i just stop playing.
It's impossible for Xbox to make every game they own, exclusive, because of so many reasons. The biggest sponsor for Game Pass will be the PS only crowd.
Too many possible scenarios...
MS will keep their newer flagships plus some other new IP's also on Xbox. They can adapt that strategy when things, hopefully, get better.
Also, I'm very curious what will happen with the new COD. Will people who are still on last gen, jump ship, or will it remain status quo?
And/Or maybe ...
They can go for a cheaper Xbox solution for now (+GP) and wait for a PS6. Or, will the PS5 Pro be a succes?
What will that group of people do since it contains a lot of gamers (casual)?
It's interesting if MS wants to keep making hardware, there must be some kind of competition. I don't think they want to erase the Xbox brand.
Fact: If Sony & MS would go all-in on multi platform tomorrow, PlayStation would still be the more popular brand.
For now I can't see them as 3rd party dev & publisher only. Surely, they must have some aces up their sleeves?
To me, MS is still giving mixed signals on how they want to proceed in the console (although PC is already part of it) business!
Maybe they will explain more about their current vision on the Xbox Showcase?
They want to keep GP, but those numbers need to grow so if they can't work that out in the next couple of years, will it cease to exist?
The truth of the matter is: Xbox has no exclusives. Consoles have exclusive games to drive people to those consoles in place of others. If Xbox is trying to use game pass as a way to subvert that, if it was working, then Xbox would've already outshined PlayStation. Xbox needs exclusives, and an epic doom game not being exclusive is not a good thing for Xbox fans. If there is something Xbox is doing that harms Xbox fans then Xbox fans are right to complain, and it devalues the Xbox brand.
@bowzoid me too, I had it for a while but I just prefer to own my games. But I suppose I don’t actually own digital games.
I actually think GP is good for getting casuals onboard but for long term gamers its not so good.
