Sea Of Thieves is sailing onto the PlayStation 5 later this month, and while there have already been some claims Microsoft is using it as a test, The Verge's senior editor Tom Warren has now chimed in.
According to "sources familiar with Microsoft's plans", Rare's open-world multiplayer pirate sandbox will act as a "key test for whether other games might make their way to PS5 or Nintendo Switch" in the future.
If this is the case, it could potentially lead to more ports like this - with Sea of Thieves already becoming PlayStation 5's 'best-selling' pre-order last month in select regions. Other games like Hi-Fi RUSH have also got off to a great start on PlayStation, with Tango Gameworks' rhythm adventure becoming one of the 'best-rated' games on PS5 this year.
Pentiment (and soon Grounded) has also been ported across to the PlayStation 5 and Switch and has received a boost from these new audiences. Of course, for now, Microsoft and Xbox have not revealed any other games beyond these four titles, so we'll just have to wait and see.
