Remember XDefiant? Ubisoft's free-to-play shooter racked up a lot of hype following a series of beta tests early last year, but then strangely went quiet as plans for a full release were seemingly delayed into 2024.
Now, Ubisoft has confirmed that progress is still ongoing, and there are plans to unveil a release date in the near future. Firstly though, a 12-hour Server Test Session will be coming to all platforms (including Xbox Series X and S) very soon.
"While we hoped to go live by the end of March, there are still some improvements that we need to test before that."
"After this short test, we expect to be able to lock a launch date and start sharing more about the exciting content XDefiant has to offer in the future!"
In related news, a recent report from Insider Gaming suggested XDefiant had "missed dozens of internal targets" in the past couple of years and the developers had become "increasingly frustrated with the lack of progress", so clearly it's not been smooth sailing for the folks at Ubi San Francisco. Nevertheless, it sounds like it's finally almost ready to go.
We've got that 12-hour Server Test Session first though, which at the time of writing doesn't have a confirmed date or time just yet. We shouldn't be waiting too long - the latest rumour suggests it'll possibly be taking place next week.

The big question is how long will the game last if it gets a full release? I give it max 12 months.
I wonder what exactly the problem is. I played the beta and it felt like a "classic CoD" which was what they were aiming for. Didn't encounter any major bugs or network problems.
@abe_hikura A dev confirmed that once they expanded the game to have larger player counts on the servers, there was severe network issues. Players disappearing, massive lag spikes, essentially rendering the game unplayable.
He said that the past 7-8 months have been spent entirely on reworking the net code for the game to fix the errors, and they have not worked on new content since the beta.
I presume that's why both Sony and MS rejected the game when it was submitted for release.
Well I guess since Ubisoft finally released Skull and Bones they needed another game to talk about for years before releasing it.
I did wonder where this and The Division Heartland had got to, I don't even know what's happening with that one!
Games gonna crash and burn hard. Ubisoft can't make anything right anymore. Even their flagship assassins Creed hasn't been good in a long time. Xdefiant is just gonna be some mediocre shooter just like skull and bones is just some mediocre pirate game. Sucks to see cause growing up Ubisoft dominated.
