Starfield got off to a strong start on Xbox, breaking all sorts of records for Bethesda, and now the development team is looking ahead to the future with the upcoming Shattered Space Story Expansion.
During an appearance on the Kinda Funny Gamescast, the game's director Todd Howard mentioned how the expansion DLC is expected to launch in Fall 2024. Before this, players can look forward to some big updates coming soon.
As summed up by Xbox fan Klobrille on social media, the updates include new display modes on console, new shipbuilding features, city maps, new gameplay, difficulty options, and some additional "surprises".
Howard also spoke about the new Starfield Creation Kit during the same interview, mentioning how it is already in the hands of some creators - with information about it to be shared soon. There's no release date, but it's apparently "really important" to the team.
Will you be returning to Starfield when its next big update arrives? Looking forward to the expansion? Tell us below.

Nice. And we need on-planet vehicles to drive around!
Even if the DLC & big updates are Cyberpunk-sized I don't think I'll be revisiting it. The core idea of wanting the player to NG+ dozens of times defeats the point of things like outposts, ship building, collecting weapons with rare effects, etc. when almost everything resets.
@shoeses
I agree re Main Story, but that's why I enjoyed rejecting the unity (and the chatter between with the main characters about rejecting it was fun), and I've stayed in my original universe.
I try to play a little Starfield every day, all in my original universe, and role-playing as a 'space cop' doing mission board missions. There's an entire game in just that.
The story is the issue.
No reason to return to starfield. I played 250 hours when it came out and did darn near everything. If the expansion is great, I might play it, but I don’t even remember how to play… so unless it’s a truly incredible expansion… I did enjoy my time with the game tho. Underrated.
I'm excited for this. I have been itching to get back into another run of starfield. I think I was on my fifth new game+ when I last played it.
“New display modes on console”……..mmmmm, I wonder. 🙏
If the display mode is 60fps and along with all the other items mentioned like maps etc.
Then finally I might get the game to play I wanted in the first place.
And if so it goes to show it should have been left in the oven to cook for another year before release.
Fingers crossed. 🤞
I’m excited to play Shattered Space and return to this universe despite thinking Starfield was a 7/10 overall. When it was good it was great and i hope both the new content and updates raise the bar from the base game.
It would have to be amazing to get me back on that game unfortunately tryed so hard to like it but I just couldn't especially with the game breaking bugs
I'm interested to see what the DLC is like. Could be a good time to get back into the game.
@jesse_dylan I have similar feelings, and played a similar number of hours at launch, so these QoL improvements are pointless for me, too late! But I am looking forward to the story expansion!
I really liked it, even bought a Series X especially for this game. After some 200 hours I was a bit bummed though when I found out all the optional missions are basically repeats, set on a different planet. I’d still like to 100% scan all planets for the sake of exploring everything, but it gets boring after a while.
I got bored after about 60 hours. Loved it at first but it just started to feel more like a chore than a fun RPG and I haven’t been back to it since. These updates sound positive though and it definitely wouldn’t be too little too late for me. If they made enough QoL improvements I could see myself going back and at least finishing the story. I have everything crossed for a better inventory management system as that alone would go a long way.
Oh yeah, I'll be back alright. Andreja and I have some unfinished business...
I decided to wait for the DLC to drop before playing the game for the first time. I wanted to do everything at the same time, rather than play, and then have to jump back in. I often buy the 'ultimate' edition of a game that includes future DLC and expansions, play the game, and then never return for the DLC even when I enjoyed the game when I first played it. I just find getting back into a game is often very difficult.
I did start playing Cyberpunk 2077 until I hit a bug, which forced me to stop, then they released an expansion that completely changed the game, so it often more ideal to just to wait.
Are people still playing this, I forgot this game existed
I’ll probably jump back in at a later date, once most of the QoL features are finished.
Have it a good 70hrs on my first play through. But the more I played the more disappointing it became. Was a steady 7-8/10. If I had paid £70 I wouldn’t have felt dissatisfied. But I’m not in a rush to jump back in either, never once felt like I’ve missed playing it. Unlike say Skyrim or fallout or FF.
I’ve recently jumped back in after putting in 50 or so hours in the fall, and I’m loving it still. So I’m glad to hear DLC & updates are coming…I foresee myself playing this game for a long time to come.
FINALLY! Looking forward to jumping back in with the new expansion. But seriously I am ready for TES6.
The core game and story is just meh, and no amount of DLCs can fix that. This is nowhere near the Cyberpunk situation. I just hope that this will wake some of the executives, before ES6 release. Once they bastardise elder scrolls, this is the end for Bethesda.
I might check it out when mods are enabled
