Capcom's new open world RPG Dragon's Dogma 2 has just enjoyed its first weekend on the market, and as it turns out, the title could mark a new open world direction for the Japanese developer. According to prominent leaker 'Dusk Golem', the Dragon's Dogma sequel is already informing the direction of the next Resident Evil game.
Yep, apparently the open world tech behind DD2 is helping drive development on two other Capcom titles; Monster Hunter Wilds and Resident Evil 9.
The leaker goes on to say that whilst a new open world direction could come into play with RE9, a big internal goal has been to retain the series' DNA with this new entry. If true, this could be a fine balancing act for Capcom to deal with going into its next Resi release.
For now this is all rumour and speculation and we should of course wait until official confirmation from Capcom on all-things RE9. Resident Evil Village was a 'step' into open world territory though, and we're curious to see where the series goes next.
What do you think to a potentially-open world Resi game? Discuss Capcom's new direction down below.

The series' DNA has changed quite a few times along the years. I guess they mean the new DNA.
Resident Evil games feel at their best in smaller enclosed spaces where you feel trapped at times so wouldn't an open world make that much harder unless it's a complete city that has been over run because I can't imagine too many open world settings that would suit RE games.
That would be so scary. Because if it gets as dark and the enemies pile on as bad as DD2 but ammo is limited…that is just a brutal death simulator.
(Seriously DD2 is out to get people. I wandered into a area that after killing 6 separate groups of knockers (really big goblins) I got ambushed by a cyclops, an ogre, two minotaurs and a griffin. I felt the game was screaming “why aren’t you dead yet!!” In indignation. I gave up after the griffin left me to go fight a drake near by. Ferrycrystal-ed the heck outta there. Could not imagine Biohazard copying that.)
Man, I seriously hope this isn't true. I love the formula of these games, and they've been doing so well evolving and tweaking that formula. Making it open world worries me.
Not sure how I feel about this. Love the RE games but I don’t think I want it open world, but maybe they are thinking something like Silent Hill where it takes place in a larger city, but the different buildings you have to go into have a bunch of narrow hallways and rooms. Something like that might work, but I’d rather they didn’t make it too large. They’ve been doing so well lately on the RE series.
Ah yes another silky smooth RE engine open world, can’t wait.
This would be a ridiculous change and would be 100% rooted in trend chasing.
I'm not a fan of the 7 or 8 style but I can see why they'd go that route.
It seems like they were just getting back to what made RE successful in the first place. I'm not a fan of this direction from the sound of it but I guess we will see.
I do like open world games but survival horror seems like a bad fit.
They are crazy if they go with the RE engine for another open world game. Dragon's Dogma 2 has shown that open world should not be an option for the engine.
I trust whatever they do with RE. I thought 7 would be awful, but it ended up being my favorite in the series. I thought REmakes were a bad idea, but they impressed me. I said REmake 4 was totally unnecessary and I was wrong. Three strikes and I’m out. With RE, I trust Capcom to do their best and I’m here for it day 1.
Are studios ever going to learn that not every game needs to be open world?
An open world Resident Evil? They're not making the same Resident Evil 6 mistakes then, no, they're making all new ones.
Chapter/level based > open world
As long as they don't forget climbing tall umbrella watchtowers
I'm sick of open world games at this stage red dead GTA and that are amazing but anything else closed world please
Not sure about this. I feel this could be another RE6 thing.
Good idea for MH.
Atrocious idea for RE.
This gaming generation is going down the toilet fast.
Presses power button on OG Xbox.
Thank God for old faithful.
Some of the comments above have me thinking that an open-world RE could maybe actually work! Maybe.
But who in their right mind would look at DD2 and say, "we want to build our game on this tech"?
So RE9 at minimum will run at 18 fps on 1080p! Absolutely horrid if true
I don't know about that. A certain amount of any game like resident evil is how they setup the surprise and shocking moments in the game. How would you set those up to happen in an open world environment because many of these are dependent on sequence?
Please God no. There's no reason for everything to go open world. It's nice to have alternatives like the Resident Evil series. Otherwise things would get really boring. At least a couple of the remakes are better than a lot of the open world games. Capcom has already proven they can't optimize an open world current gen game either, so the less they make the better.
No. Just no.
Not everything needs to be converted to an open world - especially Resident Evil where funneling you through specific locations is what builds the tension.
I quite like the current format for RE Remakes and RE 7/8 - let's keep doing that!
I'm down for that, give it a try.
I’d give them the benefit of the doubt. Plenty of opportunity in an open world title to also include castles, mansions or whatever that funnel users into a more linear/scripted set piece. Games such as Gears, Tomb Raider Reboots, etc have combined more open hubs with more traditional segments to good effect.
I'm just interested in monster hunter. But if they have ridiculous micro transactions too, then I'll probably avoid it.
